Work Text:

"Miss Cinder!" Sugar playfully pokes his head through the doorway. Cinder groans, groggily sitting up on her mattress. Manic continues to snore next to her.

"I'm up, I'm up," she mumbles. Sugar had wanted to show her something; apparently, he thought she'd like it.

Of course, whatever it was just had to take place in the middle of the night.

When all the stars were out.

"Hurry, sweetheart, you don't want to miss it. Be sure not to wake Candyfloss Hair over there."

Cinder wrinkles her nose. "Candyfloss?"

"Cotton candy, whatever," Sugar shrugs, "Disc says candy floss is th' right term."

"Discord is a Brit," Cinder argues, "which means you're not supposed to listen to him."

Sugar laughs good-naturedly. It's a warm, pleasant sound, almost playful. It used to scare Cinder, sometimes. The loud sound was not welcome to her ears, which were used to silence or arguing.

It's different.

But Cinder's learning to be okay with different.

"Either way, love, get up or I'm drivin' away without you."

"Be patient," Cinder mumbles, lightly shoving him as she quietly closes the door behind her, "I'm more of a morning person."

"Based on how you act, I'd say you hardly act like a perso-"

"I will throw you into the trunk."

Sugar places a hand on his chest as they walk out the front door, offended. "Ah, Miss Cinder, why must you wound me so?"

"Your lover is a Brit," Cinder answers, "you have no right to have speaking privileges."

Sugar stares at her. "Manic told you?"

"Probably told the whole desert by now."

"Fuck," Sugar groans, shoving his face into his hands, "please tell her not to tell Neon."

"Why?"

"That man believes I am as straight as a ruler and I find it hilarious when he tries to give me dating advice with girls. If you tell him, my main source of entertainment is over."

Cinder snorts. She hops into the passenger seat and ignores how the stars reflect in the rearview mirror. "You're twisted."

"For having humor?"

"No, for leading him on this long."

"I'm dedicated to my craft, Miss Cinder."

"Stop fucking calling me that."

Sugar hops into the driver's seat and starts the engine. They begin driving across the Getaway Mile. Cinder thumps her head against the window and focuses on the art plastered inside the car- looking oddly like the drawings were created by a small child. She doesn't question it.

"Not even going to appreciate the view?" Sugar asks.

"I've been on Route Guano a thousand times," Cinder responds quickly, "there's nothing to see. Especially at night."

"There is something to see today. Look up."

She glances up.

The stars stare back at her like normal, but this time, there are more shining lights than usual. Asteroids fly across the sky, creating a flurry of color that paints the blackness of the night.
