Work Text:

The light drizzle came fast then left fast. A few raindrops were laid out on the tip of Fushiguro Megumi's nose. The station was bleak and deserted. No passengers, no guards, only Megumi alone at a huge but vacant train station. He stepped closer to the railway. The rattle of the wheels approaching the station was echoeing. The train was coming.

The train slid into the station like a giant metal snake, then stopped unhurriedly in front of Fushiguro Megumi. The door opened. There's no announcement stating the next destination, only silence hovered in the air. He stalled for a moment. His mind was telling him to take the train, but his stomach ached every time he attempted to leave. His hands were covered in cold sweats, gripping tightly the corner of his shirt then letting go of it. He knew this feeling. Lost, probably. As if he had forgotten something. He turned his head, glancing around just like he was looking for someone. There's no one to respond to his look except melancholic nothingness.

Fushiguro Megumi tried to recall his very last memories before finding himself standing solely at this place, but it all turned into fruitless effort. His mind was a blank white paper, apart from two lines written painstakingly on the paper: "Fushiguro Megumi", his name, and "sorcerer", his occupation, he couldn't remember anything else.

He suspected that he wouldn’t come up with anything if he continued to remain here; therefore Megumi decided to go on that train, although he had no idea where it would take him - it doesn’t matter, sorcerers always have to prepare for unexpected things. Right when Megumi set his foot on the train, the door closed immediately as it was waiting for him.

Normally when Megumi travelled by train, he would stand and yield the seats to other people. That was a principle that Megumi established himself. He didn’t want a young blood sorcerer like him to occupy the seats of ordinary humans. Megumi only allowed himself to sit when he was completely exhausted after a devastating mission and his legs couldn’t carry the weight of his body anymore. This time, while there were plenty of empty chairs on the train, he still didn’t sit. He stood, facing the glass pane of the door, searching for what he had left unknown. Such as a promise.

The train hadn’t terminated. Megumi wondered if there was anything for it to hold on to this empty station. Even Megumi wanted to leave - he didn’t want to stay at a place that was surrounded by sombre.

Suddenly, Fushiguro Megumi felt like there was water falling on his cheeks. He tried to wipe it with his bare hand, leaving a feeling of wetness on his fingers. Then, the rain falling on his face got heavier. He moved his head to stay away from it but it didn’t work. The ceiling of the train was spanking new - there was no sign of leaks.

Megumi gave up avoiding the water - it just fell right above his head. He stood still, observing the scenery outside to see if there was any rain. Outside was dingy, the clearest thing he could see was his reflection on the glass panel. The reflection of a pale, thin kid.

At that moment, the dense fog shrouding Megumi’s mind dispersed. Memories like a movie, streaming vividly in front of his eyes. Familiar faces appeared respectively. Gojo sensei, Nobara, Maki senpai, Toge senpai, Panda senpai, Yuuta senpai, and Yuuji. Itadori Yuuji. Itadori Yuuji fighting beside him. Itadori Yuuji sitting next to him on the sofa, watching a sci-fi movie together. Memoirs created with Itadori Yuuji like a flowing river, filled in his visibility and slowly drowned him.

Abruptly, Megumi realized that water falling on his face wasn’t rain but tears. Large, warm tears of Itadori Yuuji fell on his face. Yuuji’s bawling resounded in his ears. Megumi could hear Yuuji calling his name, begging him not to leave, beseeching him to stay. And apologizing to him. For failing to save his life. Megumi wanted to reach out and wipe away Yuuji’s tears, but his arms were out of control and dangled powerlessly. Pleasant warmth wrapped him up, and Yuuji had him in a tight hold.

He watched as Yuuji suffered. It had been a long time since Megumi last saw the light in his Yuuji’s eyes, and deep black despair was filling up those eyes right now. He wanted a radiant smile to spread over his best friend’s face once again. His crush, to be exact. But Megumi wasn’t sure if he still had a chance to see that. He was not even conscious enough to comfort his painful Yuuji. The moment he had one foot in the grave, he realised there were a lot of words he hadn’t told Yuuji. He wanted to tell Yuuji that it wasn’t his fault, that the time he spent with Yuuji was the happiest moment, that he wanted to stay with Yuuji till forever. That he liked Yuuji very much. Very very very much. That a thousand of verys still couldn’t fully express his “like Yuuji”. He knew he had fallen for this pink haired guy a long tịme ago, but he never got the courage to say that. There were times that he questioned himself, would he regret it if he kept running away from his feelings? But now he could assertively answer that he wouldn’t regret it. Someone once said love was the most twisted curse of them all. A piece of unfinished love is a piece of agony, and the one who stays is the one who suffers from everlasting wounds. Megumi did not want his love to become a curse. He did not want his beloved to suffer.

And now he would leave this world with dry eyes. He wouldn’t cry for a love story that had not yet formed. He would leave with relief, that the one who died was him and wasn’t the one he loved. He would let go of the burden that had been on his shoulders and go to the other side of the hill, where he was sure the grass must be greener. He would be waiting for him there, because he knew that Yuuji would come back to him.

The train departed, started at a crawl, then sped up and rushed into the clouds towards the rainbow.
