A Little Trade

Summary:

(In a reality where Kugie–not Kanna–had survived their first trial.)

After finding an interesting card, Kugie is approached by someone who makes a strange offer to her. Someone who she doesn't particularly trust.

Notes:

Okay I wanna preface this a few things

One, this thing is a year old. Like, I looked at the doc and it said the last time I edited it was back in February 2020, which. WOW. That's a long time ago, yeah? Back before the world... uh, ya know.

Anyways, I kept this in the drafts because I didn't like it. However, looking back... I decided, "you know what? I'll publish this." (After I made a few minor changes, of course.)

Ngl, me posting this reminded me of how much I don't like AO3's formatting sometimes. I dunno, just seems iffy to me? Could be because copy and pasting from a Google doc is definitely, well. Weird.

So, yeah. Take this basically year old draft and have with it! I guess.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kugie was in the bar area, looking at the card she had just found suspiciously. It had the word “Sacrifice” written at the top of it, with a purple skull pictured in the center of it. She wasn’t too sure what it meant, but she had a bad feeling about it.

“That’s a bad card, you should probably get rid of it,” someone spoke suddenly.

She jumps at the voice of the unexpected visitor. She quickly turns to see who was there… it was just Sou.

She puts a hand to her chest, feeling her heartbeat for a moment. “ Don’t do that, you had me worried for a moment,” she says… realizing something. “Wait a minute, why are you even here?”

Sou looks at her, confused, adjusting his scarf a little. “Didn’t you hear me? That card you have is a bad one, you should get rid of it.”

“Why should I trust someone like you? You’re pretty suspicious, besides that Keiji guy," Kugie raised an eyebrow at him.

“Because you’ll die if you keep that card on you,” he replies seriously. “Look, how about this? We trade cards.”

“How do I know your card isn’t worse than mine?” She questions, not entirely sure if she could trust him.

He pulls out a card from his pocket. It read “Commoner”, with a simple gardening tool pictured on it. “Because at least mine doesn’t guarantee death,” he states blatantly.

Kugie thinks for a moment, looking at her card, and looking back at Sou’s card. She bites her lip, wondering if this is even the right thing to do...

...she extends the card to him. “I hope you’re right about this,” she says, still uncertain about her choice.

He gives her the Commoner card and takes the Sacrifice card. “Glad we could make this exchange, Miss Kugie.”

“Please don’t call me that ever again. It sounds weird.”

“My apologies. Now then, there’s a catch to all of this,” he says.

Ah. Guess she should've expected that. “What’s the catch?”

“I’ll let you know before the first main game begins. However… I have a few things to tend to. Farewell, for now,” he says, leaving the room.

Little does she know, this small interaction will have a massive effect later on.

Notes:

Hope you enjoyed this! I know it's short, but that's bc this is how long it initially was. And honestly? That's all that's needed for it. I don't think I could stretch this out without it seeming unnecessary, really.

Aside from that, sorry I disappeared for over a year! I just wasn't interested in writing, and instead have been focused on RPing with friends for the past year! I may publish some more drafts soon, I dunno. Can't guarantee anything really. Besides that, have a good one folks!
