Work Text:

“Take it down Eret, or I will make you do it myself.”

If the totem god had known that would have caused this, he would have left the build alone- he would have left Eret alone. But that was too late. Foolish watched as Eret ran away, the way her eyes were filled with tears and the way her body showed nothing but fear and sadness. His green eyes looked down at their string, the one that connected the two soulmates.

The red string for foolish always was a sign of hope for him. It was a sign that no matter what memory loss Eret had, the god was still connected to his angel. He never expected that bond and that connection to break with this fight.

He saw that it was breaking, it was fading and being pulled. Their bond was breaking and foolish couldn’t do anything. He couldn’t fix this. He had broken Eret’s trust in him, and Eret’s trust in their bond.

To back up, after saying that- the two had gotten into an argument. They had said horrible things to each other, well- mostly foolish saying things they he knew he couldn’t say to Eret. Which is why he tried to stay stoic as he watched Eret run, he watched the string snap and felt his heart break. The string snap felt like a piece was taken from him.

And he let it happen. He didn’t chase after her. He watched as they ran and cried. Foolish only turned his head and started taking down the build.
-
“Eret?” The word came as a slap to her face as she recognized the voice. Eret looked up as she walked down the prime path and made eyes contact. Blinding white eyes clashed chocolate brown eyes. Wilbur.

The queen had heard news of Wilbur’s revival. She missed Ghostbur sometimes, he was a good person. He was a loving man. But the true Wilbur had returned, and he was staring her down with…concern…? He looked at them like they were the only thing in the next few miles.

“Wilbur…” it wasn’t like she hadn’t talk to him before this moment. He had given him forgiveness. Wilbur had given him the forgiveness around two days ago, it was bitter sweet but Eret accepted- she was so desperate to be accepted by his old friend.

“You look awful.” the former President said as he took off his coat, showing his yellow sweater underneath, and wrapped it over the soaked King. She was soaked due to the rain that Eret didn’t even take notice of.

“So do you.” Eret responded and Wilbur gave them a stiff smile. Eret loved his smile.

“Let’s get you back to the castle, I don’t wanna get any more soaked than we are..” Eret nodded along and walked with the other brunette. Wilbur looked down at Eret and saw the tear stains. Who had made her cry?

That question could wait, right now he needed to get him inside and comforted. So Wilbur stayed quiet for as they walked through the broken community house. A place that use to be a sign of neutrality, now broken by a tyrant.

Wilbur could feel the tensions radiating off the king. Wilbur stopped walking. They were on the path that lead to Eret’s castle, so close and the rain was getting harder. Eret turned and had hands clutching the coat while staring at his old friend.

“Do you think the rain is like music?” In Eret’s eyes, it was a random question that made him chuckle a bit. But Wilbur looked serious and smiled at Eret. “Just answer the question.”

“Fine, I think it is. But I don’t think anyone would be able to dance to it- now come on, we’ll catch a-“

“Let me prove you wrong.”

That caught Eret off guard. His eyes looked Wilbur up and down as if he was checking if Wilbur was lying. Wilbur held out his hand. Eret couldn’t help it anymore so he walked over and took it.

“Shall we dance, my king?” The question caused Eret to giggle and nod. “Yes please.” And just like that, they were off. Wilbur pulling Eret in, putting on hand on their waist while the other was holding Eret’s hand gently in his.

Eret’s free hand landed on Wilbur’s shoulder. Slowly they danced through out the rain, starting out cautious and careful- quickly turned to carefree and full of laughter and smiles. Their laughs mixing together and Eret moving closer to the point where he was basically cuddling Wilbur. Wilbur hugged the other close and danced through the rain.

“Eret…”

“Yes?”

“I know you probably don’t wanna talk about it but…who made you cry?” The question was soft, the same way his grip on Eret was soft yet firm.

“…Foolish. Foolish made me cry.” Eret didn’t explain further. He didn’t want to relive what just happened. Wilbur grip tightened but not enough to hurt, Eret felt safe…felt even protected by the brunette.

Wilbur assumed it was foolish. He could see that Eret’s string was broken and he knew it connected to foolish. Foolish had hurt Eret so much that the string broke. He was going to kill Foolish once he knew what he did. Wilbur hummed softly as he held Eret’s face and looked into their eyes.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you like that again, do I make myself clear?”

Eret stared into his eyes and her mouth parted ever so slightly. Why did she feel her string being tugged ever so slightly? Why did she feel so safe with Wilbur like this? Why did he want to stay in the rain like this forever? What did he have to do to keep it this way? Oh dear…why was so amazing?

“You promise..?” The question slipped out, Eret didn’t mean to ask it but it slipped.

“Yes I promise, with my whole heart I promise. Now, do I make myself clear…?” Wilbur questioned again, Eret nodded in response. “Words Eret, I need words…please..” a simple request.

“Yes you have. You made yourself very clear.” Eret and Wilbur ignored how their strings glowed under them. Both strings that were faded and broken, now glowing and full of happiness between the two commanders.

Wilbur pushed his forehead against Eret, which Eret returned. “Forever.” Wilbur responded and Eret echoed him: “Forever.”
