"I'm... disappointed in you."
Those were the words that came out of his mouth. His tone sounded harsh as usual, but there was a pinch of sadness in it, rather than actual disappointment.
He didn't want his egoistical way of thinking to get in-between one of the kindest – if not THE kindest – people he had ever met.
What if he would've ended up hurting her too, one way or another?
In a way, the orange-haired boy was still hurting the possible love of his life, although under a completely mental aspect rather than a physical one, but at the same time he wanted to keep her safe by letting her stay away from him.
What if the girl would've ended up in a life-threatening situation, just like his mother when she didn't feel like living anymore, or like HER mother, who ended accidentally under the wheels of a car?
He would've certainly chosen his life over hers.
That's what he had always done, and deeply wanted to prevent that for once. Therefore, it was basically his duty to push her away in order to don't let an eventual disaster happen.
She doesn’t deserve him.
Or so he thought.
“…oi, Tohru.”
He glanced at the brunette with those scary, yet saddening orange cat-like eyes.
His tone was still the same, except it felt like his voice was trembling even more this time. He tried to hide it.
The urge to run away like he had always done was there, but some strange force kept him from doing that.
It’s as his feet were stuck to the ground due to some unknown entity.
“I don’t-”
“It’s okay if you don’t feel the same.”
Tohru raised her head, staring straight into the boy’s feline eyes. Tears were still streaming down her face, but she attempted to sound as serious – and possibly as convincing – as she could.
“As long as I get to stay by your side, it doesn’t matter what kind of relationship we have…!”
The brunette took a small breath before letting out any other sentence. This time, she was facing the ground. Her tears had now become one with the rain that kept pouring.
“I… I promise… that I can get over it.”
Kyo was no longer staring at her, either. Not a single word dared to leave his opened mouth.
“I’m… now used to it, anyway.” Tohru then muttered to herself, before covering her face with her right arm.
The boy had clearly heard such painful words despite the whisper being quite low. He clenched one of his hands on his stomach, feeling as he was about to explode right on the spot.
His feet had resisted more than enough.
It was finally time to escape…
…once again.
“Stupid cat!”
A voice echoed throughout the rain, right before he could finally make his infamous move due to that weird entity disappearing for who knows what reason. It sounded worried and angry at the same time, with an odd tint of decor that only a certain person could manage to assume even during such distressing occasions.
It was undoubtedly Yuki.
“Stupid rat.” Kyo wanted to grumble back, but he somehow managed to keep that sentence in his blurred mind.
“You will both catch a cold if you keep standing there!”
The grey-haired boy rushed to Tohru, his equally grey eyes shining in the pouring rain. Meanwhile, Kyo stared at him as if he wished to kill him with a single, menacing glance.
“Honda-san, are you-”
The girl quit using her arm to cover her wet face and grabbed one of Yuki’s hands, which she then proceeded to hold tightly as she looked into those usually shining eyes of his.
“Please, don’t worry about me… I’ll be fine, really…!”
Deep down, she did want him to worry. He could’ve worried as much as his heart told him to, really. But passing as an egoistical being would’ve just worsened her entire mood.
“…Kyo.”
Yuki turned to his so-called rival, his expression shifting completely to a furious one. Now he was the one wishing that he could’ve killed the other with nothing but a glance.
Strangely, he didn’t get an answer. It wasn’t the best time to fight for sure, especially when having a lot of confusion in your head.
“To… to be fair, I did start this specific conversation…” Tohru muttered. Her voice was still faint, considering all of the sobbing she did.
The end of that sentence was quickly followed by a huge sigh coming from Kyo’s apparent nemesis.
“...alright.”
He gave one last look to the orange-haired boy, as to tell him: “We need to talk.”
The latter shivered a little, not because he feared Yuki himself obviously; what truly scared him was the outcome of their next heated argument.
“Let’s get you to your room, then.”
He smiled to the crying girl while leading her to the entrance, trying to lift up her spirits at least a little. She couldn’t help but smile back, although struggling to do so. Yuki didn’t mind that at all, considering what Tohru had always done for him, and what situation she had just been in. If anything, it was still an action that he had deeply appreciated.
"Tohru… I’m sorry.”
Those were the first words pronounced by Kyo after such a long period of time. Of course, the two had to be gone in order to let that happen.
"At least he treats you much better than I do."
He looked up to the sky, his hair dripping with water and the pupils of his eyes slightly more dilated than they were previously. It wasn't raining anymore, but the clouds were still up there, covering the dim glow of the stars.
So many thoughts were running through his head that the dizziness he felt eventually developed into some sort-of breakdown.
Would’ve Tohru been able to fall asleep?
Most importantly, would’ve she gotten so easily over the love she felt for a pathetic creature like him?
Would’ve she understood that, if she had decided to stay by his side, would’ve she gotten so hurt she would’ve preferred to die at some point?
Or worse... she could've died by the hands of her own future husband. And also, what was going to happen during the upcoming days?
How were they going to face each other after such an awful event?
What was the girl of his distant dreams going to think of him?
“I didn’t mean to fall in love.”
