Practice Shot

Summary:

Revali uses Link as a teaching aid to humiliate the other knights for their lack of archery skills

Notes:

This is just a little something I came up with to test out how well the app "Story Plotter" worked. Short answer: Okay, still getting used to it though.

Update: 11-28-21 I now have a tumblr and have no idea what I am doing with it. https://theelderchonicler.tumblr.com/

Work Text:

The sound of bows drawing back, the thunk made as the arrow is released, the whistling as the projectiles fly through the air, and the exsasperated sigh of the blue feathered rito champion as every single one of the assembled Hylian soldiers fail to hit their targets. The princess had asked him to train the archers for the coming days but honestly he had no idea where to even start with this pathetic lot.

"I have an idea. How about we just go ahead and give Calamity the keys to the castle and lay face down on the ground. Maybe then he will kill you all quickly for not wasting his time with such absolutely pathetic archery." Revali didn't even know where to begin on getting these men shaped up when just in time to provide a decent teaching aid, the quiet knight of Zelda appeared.

"Link just in time." Revali said smiling like a proud teacher seeing his favorite pupil. Which to be fair was the case. Revali had trained Link shortly after they had met in Rito village following a failure in communication that led to Rito and Hylian fighting against each other and encroaching monsters. Revali and Link had dueled one on one and Revali had not been all to impressed with the blond boy's archery in battle and quickly went about remedying that issue. That time also made Revali come to respect and enjoy the company of the knight.

Link felt the glares of many of the knights as he walked over to Revali. These fourth and fifth sons of nobility had a deep dislike for the blond boy who they felt held positions far above what his station in life should merit. Revali resisted the urge to glare at them in turn. They had no idea who Link was or what made him who he was. They only know his parentage and that made them feel like he was below them. This view is one of the things Revali hated most about Hylian society which seemed to place blood above merit most of the time, though Link was proof this was not always true.

Link took up his archery stance and Revali explained to the knights in slow and excruciatingly painful, condescending detail. He relished the looks on the faces of these low ranking scions as he spoke in the most simplistic of terms as if they were children. Link then drew an arrow and aimed carefully as his mind worked on determining how much of an arc to give the arrow and how far off to aim to account for the wind. At Revali's order he released an arrow and it hit the target in the outer most ring. Some of the knights snickered as they forgot their own failure to hit the target entirely. Revali leaned in and whispered,

"Link?" His tone was one not amused as he knew Link could do better. Link replied with a small smirk visible only because Revali was right next to him, and two words whispered so low that Revali could barely make them out.

"Practice Shot." With that Link fired three more arrows in the span of a minute. All three hitting the bullseye to the chagrin of some of the knights and the unconcealed astonishment of others. Revali gently patted Link on the back and whispered to him again.

"That is my Hylian." Link made sure to contain his mirth but allowed a smirk to show as Revali proceeded to ruthlessly drill the knights partially for the hell of it. Link left Revali to his work and went off to cook their dinner.
