Work Text:
“Of all the photos, they have to take one when I am pissed after a whole morning of meetings,” Lena Luthor complained as Jess passed her the latest issue of CATCO magazine once stepping into the office. Her secretary laughed, shrugging her shoulders and leaving the room, not without a reminder to the CEO on her pending lunch with Kara Danvers and her free morning to do whatever she wanted in her lab.
Approached by Kara on a day of what the reporter said, “a weird proposal, but hear me out first?” Lena could not believe that in the end, she was game enough to actually take on Kara’s proposal of being her secretary for a week.
“Jess could get a well-rested week of break, and you get to spend lots of time with me, your best friend!” Kara argued, unfairly putting her puppy eyes on full blast at the CEO. “We could show everyone how amazing you are with the piece, and hopefully, helps after the wreckage Lex left behind in this new Earth.”
“Kara, I love you, but you are not going to be able to keep up with all this work, even if Snapper isn’t going to assign you new pieces during the week,” Lena said weakly, knowing that she was already convinced to let Kara do whatever she wanted. “I need Jess to keep L-Corp functioning.”
The reporter pouted, “But, I am Supergirl. I am fast enough to handle any and everything.”
“I really hate that I know you are Supergirl,” the CEO complained. “You can’t throw this secret around and use your powers to your advantage for measly stuff like this!”
“...is that a yes to the proposal?”
Thankfully, that was nearly a month ago, and Kara’s stint in L-Corp went, surprisingly, harmless.
Checklist: Eight ways to know if your best friend is in love with you
“Oooh, a new piece by Nia,” Lena stopped her flipping as she looked at the article by the younger reporter. Since knowing Kara is Supergirl, the CEO was thrust into the realm of superheroes, getting to know who are the ones behind their masks and heroic acts, and connecting them with their “human” selves. A soft spot for the young superhero, the CEO stared at the piece as it spoke out to her.
1) Wanting to spend alone time together
“Lunch date tomorrow too?” Kara asked as she packed up the finished containers. Lena nodded, double-checking her schedule and making a mental note to tell Jess to change her lunch appointment with Kate Kane to a later time. “I’ll bring Chinese.”
“I can get Jess to buy from the sushi place you like across town. We are already going to have Chinese for movie night tomorrow night,” the CEO offered.
Kara beamed the brunette a smile, putting down the containers and sweeping Lena into her arms. “Did I tell you that you are my favourite yet?”
The CEO laughed in the embrace. “Not today, but noted. I’ll make sure to get an extra serving of gyozas ok?”
“You are my favourite.”
2) Remembers everything you said and things about you
“I’ll go flying with you,” Lena said softly, hoping it will console the sad girl in her arms. A bad fight with a gang of aliens had resulted in a civilian’s death, and Supergirl, no, Kara, was taking it badly. The CEO had been following the fight downtown throughout the day, watching as the blonde superhero and her friends tried their best to subdue the group of aliens. As they were preoccupied with the fighting, a fallen beam crushed a civilian before Supergirl had time to stop it.
Kara had come over to Lena’s after being cleared by Tower, changed into the CEO’s comfy MIT hoody and wrapped in the brunette’s arms since. “But you are afraid of heights,” the superhero muttered, grasping Lena’s hands.
“You said before that being above the clouds allow you to calm down and think,” Lena offered, “And you will never let me fall. I trust you. Let’s go flying. You can relax and decompress, and still, have me with you.”
Kara sent Lena the first smile she wore since the fight.
3) Search for you in the midst of crowds despite other friends being around
“Oh Kara, thank God you’re okay!” Running into the blonde reporter’s arms, Lena heaved a sigh of relief. “I heard what happened in CATCO and I wasn’t sure--”
“No one else was hurt, just James.”
4) Shower you with flowers as a thank you
“So, my office is overflowing with flowers,” Kara started, taking a seat beside Lena.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah,” the reporter smiled at her new friend, “you didn’t have to do this.”
“I don’t know how to thank you. Jess suggested flowers,” the CEO replied sheepishly, a blush slowly creeping up her cheeks.
“I meant a stalk of sunflower or two, not a whole office of roses,” Jess muttered as she placed the order at three different National City florists.
5) Don’t mind sharing their food with you even though they love it
“You really have to try this!” Kara said excitedly, a forkful of stir-fry noodles from the new Chinese place appearing in front of Lena.
The duo had ordered Chinese for their movie night and it was from the new eatery opened across CATCO. They had wanted to go for lunch there on one of their lunch dates lately but Lena’s busy schedule meant that the pair would rather eat in at Lena’s office to save precious travel time.
Nodding as she chewed, Lena grinned at the blonde in approval. “It’s so good,” she praised, “I think we should order from here more.”
“But no one can beat Auntie Cho when it comes to these,” mouth full with potstickers, Kara let on, pointing to her mouth. Worried that the new place would not measure up to Kara’s standards, Lena asked her driver to make a detour to pick up two servings of Auntie Cho’s potstickers before heading over to Kara’s for movie night. “Thank you for getting these,” the blonde smiled, waving her fork of potstickers before stuffing them at one go into her mouth.
6) Knows what you need before you even say it
“I’ve put out the NCU hoody and your favourite pair of sweatpants on my bed,” Kara hollered from the kitchen as Lena stepped into the house with her spare key. “Also got your favourite tea and those disgusting kale chips.”
The CEO laughed as she walked towards Kara’s bedroom, taking off her blazer and all ready to get changed into something comfortable. A day fighting misogynistic white old men had left her drained and Kara was a breath of fresh air.
Greeting the reporter in the kitchen, now dressed in the snug hoody, Lena melted into her best friend’s arms. “I’ve got you,” Kara muttered, resting her chin on the top of the CEO’s head, hands tightening around the shorter girl.
“You know just what I need,” Lena replied, sighing.
“That I definitely do.”
7) Encourages and help you fulfil your dreams
“What about you, Ms Danvers? I didn’t see your name on the byline,” Lena asked, raising an eyebrow at the blonde girl.
“Well, like I said, I am not a reporter.”
“You could have me fooled.”
--
“This is Kara Danvers, she’s one of the best reporters in National City.”
8) Would do everything they can to save you
“Save the chemicals, not me.”
“No, I’m not gonna drop you.”
“Let me go.”
“NO!”
Lena Luthor gulped, checking everything on the list and groaned. “Five checks on this list is one too many? What does all eight mean?” the CEO muttered, burying her face in her hands.
Puppy Danvers 11:15 AM
I am picking up lunch from Italy, that pasta place you love. Any request?
Soft Luthor 11:16 AM
Just you.
“Good luck to me, I guess.”
