Chapter Text
“ I heard Gryffindors will have a new seeker for the game next week,” Yoongi said as he sat down beside his best friend during their break between classes. They were in the study room, a big and wide place with small tables everywhere. Several were busy with students hunched over books, others had groups of friends chatting excitedly in a low voice. Hoseok, on the other hand, had a parchment filled with stick figures, all of them riding brooms. He didn’t even need to ask to know he was thinking of ways to beat the lions in their next game.
“ yeah, it’s...Jean…? No, Jeon Jungkook” his friend answered, not looking up. His tongue poked out as he concentrated on making the silly drawings move around the paper in Quidditch techniques.
As the captain of Hufflepuff, there was a lot of pressure on his friend to win. He wanted to start the year with his right foot and for it to happen they had to beat Gryffindors in the first match of the season. Yoongi didn’t particularly care about Quidditch. He wasn’t on the team and if anyone asked about the players for his house, Slytherin, he wouldn’t be able to tell them anything at all.
“ I think I've heard that name before,” Yoongi said, arching an eyebrow contemplating. Maybe he was a star student. They always wrote about the best student of the year for each school year in the Hogwarts newspaper.
“ Doubt it, he’s in his 4th year so we don’t have classes together” Hoseok mused, finally looking up from his artwork. “ And you’re not that popular to know that many students.” There was a playful tone to his words that made Yoongi's lips curl up a bit.
“ Well, I’m your best friend so I would say I’m at least known around the school”.
It wasn’t a reach, Yoongi thought. Hoseok was the captain of the quidditch team, he was famous, plus he was incredibly charismatic and charming. Hoseok most likely had his own secret Fanclub... and if it existed, at least he knew they would know him . Besides, it wasn’t that common to see such close friends from different houses like them. So of course people had to comment about it. Gossips were rampant inside Hogwarts.
Yoongi went back to his own piece of parchment. While he loved to talk with Hoseok he understood the other was busy - if Hufflepuff wins this match they might win the cup, it was a big deal - and Yoongi did have homework to do. They would not do themselves, no magic for such things.
It took 2 days for Yoongi to hear the name Jeon Jungkook again. The Slytherin boy was inside HGT ( Hogwarts) News headquarters - it was just an unused old classroom, he really didn’t understand why everyone wanted to call it a headquarters - when low and behold, a shy Gryffindor entered the room. He was young, and if Yoongi would guess, he would say he’s around 14, so a fourth-year student. There were a bunch of papers in his hands, and the boy was holding it so tightly some were almost ripping apart.
“ I’m sorry, but uhm, is Namjoon hyung here?” He asked, looking around the room anxiously with a small frown and a bite of his bottom lip. The kid had black hair slightly too big as it had just started to cover his eyes a tiny bit.
“ Namjoon has double potions on Wednesdays afternoon” there was a small pause, a moment where he felt more curious about the kid. It wasn't common to have students searching for Namjoon in particular. “ Why? Are those your writing for the anonymous column of the week? If so, you can just leave them there, at that pile” He pointed to a cardboard box on top of an unused desk.
“ah...uhm, no, not really” The boy was clearly uncomfortable, probably not used to talking to older students, even if Yoongi was just 2 years older. Or maybe it was because he was a Slytherin. A lot of people still believed in this old rivalry between their two houses.
“ ...so? “ He tried to prompt him up, moving his hand in a circle in the air. Yoongi was slowly losing his patience as the kid just couldn’t give him an answer. He really had a lot of things to do. It was his own fault to be late on his projects but losing time like this did not help either.
“ I was actually... I wanted to enter the club, I mean, Hogwarts News! I always, I really like this initiative, you know? It’s really cool and Namjoon is really cool too, being the Headboy and all and, and the chief of the Newspaper, you know, obviously you know, you’re a writer too-” a small snort left Yoongi lips, cutting the other little speech.
“ Right, of course, then those are some of your writings for Namjoon? “ The boy nodded fervently. There was a small glint to his eyes. Even with the nervousness coming out of him in waves, he could see a shine of determination. A standard book Gryffindor.
“ I see, you can give it to me, I’ll make sure to pass it along when he comes here, yeah? Don’t be so nervous, I’m sure he’ll like it, if he doesn’t you’ll know too, anyway” The end words were slightly lower as he started to read the small text of the first page of the bunch that the kid had handed to him.
Before the boy left, he cleared his throat, gathering his attention once again. “ The last one is inspired by a poem that was published last week... that one that Namjoon hyung wrote. Can you tell him that? He’ll probably see it right away, just… his poem Defining Wisdom by a Ravenclaw was really inspiring” His voice was calmer, not as high pitched as before and Yoongi thinks he’s proud of his work. He made a mental note to read it himself before passing it to Namjoon. He knew his opinion was greatly appreciated, after all they were the longest members of the club.
“ Alright, thanks for dropping by,” Yoongi mumbled, continuing to read.
When he ended the first page he noticed, At the left corner, there it was.
By Jeon Jungkook, 4th, Gryffindor.
So, the shy and nervous little lion was the prodigy kid that Hoseok has been mumbling all about? The one Hoseok was saying it would be hard to beat? It didn’t seem right but Hogwarts was, all in all, a small community and he really doubted anyone else existed with the same name. This boy was shy, murmuring and blushing while talking about Namjoon but the words out there were that he was the golden lion.
He definitely noticed how it wasn’t just one text Jungkook wrote with Namjoon as his inspiration. The others weren’t out there as in the last text but he had picked some of the Namjoons work and made a twist with them. Giving them new meaning. Plus the way he was all shy and wanting to speak to the older boy directly made Yoongi conclude that… Jungkook was a fan. Namjoon’s fan. Just the idea was hilarious by itself.
“ You got a fanboy, did you know?” Yoongi exclaimed the second Namjoon entered the room. The older boy stopped moving, staring at him puzzledly. He definitely shocked him with such a bold statement. “ sorry?”
“ Well, a kid came in and dropped these for you, he clearly looks up to you” Yoongi picked the papers, leaning forward to give them to him. Namjoon picked them, still slightly confused. HGT club did not get many applications during the application time, nevermind outside of it. “ Jeon Jungkook wants to enter the team, he’s pretty green, has a few grammar mistakes but I would say he has potential”
“ Oh, okay, I’ll read it today… he might come in this week for an impromptu tryout if you think he’s good, there's no reason to not trust your judgement, Yoongi”
Namjoon was a tall 7th-year Ravenclaw student. He had created this club in his second year, with the purpose of a weekly newsletter where students could write to students about Hogwarts life; tricks for classes and what happened inside these walls. Since then, the club had gained traction, grew in size with 5 active members in their team, plus anyone else who would like to submit their own writings for the anonymous section.
To say that Namjoon had changed the system in Hogwarts was an understatement. They were the first club to gain a small number of galleons each month just for them to be able to increase the quality of the paper and the printing. They created parties to get funds. They wrote about quidditch. Even the headmaster had come to them when some warnings had to be reminded at the start of the year.
Yoongi had entered the group in his 3rd year. He was accepted because of his poems and small stories. Differently from most of his colleagues, he only worked in the creative writing section. He had a love for writing but did not enjoy walking around and act like a journalist as the others did.
Namjoon was also a slightly different member. Now, he was in his last year and with NEWTS coming closer each day that passed, he had decided to be the editor. The older boy was the one that edited and chose the papers which would be in the newspaper, a job much easier as he now didn’t need to write as well. Before this change, this was something all of the members did once a week for hours. Now it was only Namjoons work, he could do whenever and wherever he wanted.
“ I like his What is courage, defined by a Gryffindor poem,” Namjoon said, looking up with a small smile. That particular paper was put in the small pile, accepted to be published Friday. “ It's pretty fun, isn’t it? I like he took a whole different approach than what I did”
Namjoon poems have always been something Yoongi truly likes about the other. They were deep, with an amazing wordplay. They even sounded melodic and he knew a singer could pull them off really nicely if they so wished.
This poem was no exception; Namjoon had written about knowledge and wisdom. How it was the strongest weapon during war times and that it was what made societies move forwards. There were even mentions of muggle technologies that Yoongi had to ask Hoseok what it meant. All in all, he had made being a smartass something cool , powerful and true wisdom something rare.
Jungkook had picked this idea but in reverse. He had called courage a fool, a one dare away from the biggest mistake of their lives. Because courage was the clown weapon, one that they say made them do acts that in hindsight are simply and utterly dumb. Yoongi had especially liked it when he had mentioned the small bravery moments that occur in daily life, the actual truthful courage in existence, which always resided inside everyone.
“ You took your idea of knowledge as something powerful and great while he went with the negatives of the definition of courage, It was very un-Gryffindor to say... the least and because of that, I think we should put it on the Friday journal” He knows Namjoon had already put it on the publishing pile, but he did say he valued his opinion.
“ Definitely, even if I think some Lions wouldn’t be too happy about it, you know, some still think their house is the best” There was a playful tone under his words.
Until Yoongi's 3rd year, the rivalry of the houses was insane. and even now there was the left out of these feelings, sometimes coming up. Like in these moments. The most they could do was to prepare for a few angry letters. Maybe even some from parents.
Some kids were just too spoiled.
“ They’re Gryffindors, of course, they do, alas, it isn’t their choice but ours and sometimes it's very fun to make them all mad” Yoongi said, ending in a chuckle. “ I’ll be going now, hyung, don’t miss dinner today, I noticed you weren’t at your house table yesterday”
Namjoon shook his hand in the air to dismiss that thought. Yoongi left the room with his bag as the older man sat down in front of a small pile of papers. It had been a good day, unexpected? yes. But those were the best in his own opinion.
Jungkook was a good kid.
The next day he came in, he had a big smile on his face that showed off his bunny teeth. Namjoon showed the small corner for the students that weren’t fully into the club yet. It was a fairly simple set-up, with around large table with Quills and papers at their disposal. Because Jungkook was a substitute for the Quidditch team - and therefore went to half of their training - he did not feel capable of entering their club full time. Not yet, he had said. Nevertheless, he could come here often, and for some reason, Jungkook loved nagging him.
“ Who’s your favourite quidditch team?”
“ I don’t follow sports, sorry”
“ Then... which Hogwarts team?” His voice was tilting to a question as if he was doubting himself asking such a thing. People normally followed or prefered their house's team. For more than half the school this question would be met with questionable eyes and a sarcastic answer. However, Yoongi wasn’t like that.
“ I don’t follow it either, but my best friend is the Hufflepuff captain so I guess, Hufflepuff” He answered nonchalantly. At least he would support his friend. He was sure Hoseok if he was right here, would puff out his chest and give him a heart-shaped smile.
Jungkook then started to ramble about their next game. The boy knew a lot about quidditch and every team member out there. Yoongi only knew what his friend would tell him. It was mostly a one-sided talk which he didn’t mind. The Slytherin had always been more to the silence, or shall he say, listener type of person.
There were a few questions about his friend, which he answered without a problem. Jungkook knew about him somewhat, only what others talked about him though. Which was quite a big of a deal already. He wanted to know Hoseok's favourite colour - yellow, obviously - His favourite animal - he loved squirrels - and even his favourite food, which Yoongi told him was always changing. Hogwarts food was too good to just have one as his favourite. Jungkook nodded his head solemnly to that as if he struggled with this same problem on a daily basis.
Jungkook did not shut up afterwards, or even gave him a break. He obviously liked to speak a lot, leaving Yoongi to answer with short phrases before continuing on. Sometimes he would notice he was talking for a few minutes without a pause and he would get shy as if he became self-aware and Yoongi was too kind for his own good. He would nod to Jungkook, move his hand, basically saying go on .
There were papers he had to write and he had a test next week, but he found it difficult to tell this boy to stop. The conversations were also pretty fun.
Their conversation went from that to:
“ so, you don’t know either Marvel or DC comics?” Yoongi had never heard of those, he thinks. He made a face, picking his quill but not writing anything down.
“ Nope, it's muggle shit, I don’t really care, I’m more into wizard things” By more into , Yoongi truly meant, it was the only thing he actually knew.
“Hyung, maybe you should take at least one class on Muggle studies, you’re missing a lot of cool stuff” He sounded exasperated. As if it was a sin to not know those two words and everything they’re about to. Yoongi thought Jungkook was half-blood so he was actually impressed by his knowledge of the other kind. Generally, half-bloods would live their lives mostly in the wizarding society because they had magic in their veins.
to even just:
“ You should try rap, I think you would be great and your poems are too cool to just be on paper!” Rap was rare in the magical community. In fact, any type of singer was rare, there weren’t that many wizards to even have industries such as muggles. That he knew. For the rap he had heard, the magical ones, it sounded bad. Yoongi didn’t know if he simply didn’t like these wizards or maybe he didn’t like the genre. Or maybe they weren’t good.
“I don’t know how to rap though, I prefer to just be writing”
“ You can always learn!” There it was, a lion positivity.
“ Jungkook, I’m quite busy already, I'll just keep doing my thing” Jungkook pouted, trying to make Yoongi change his mind. It did not happen. But he agreed on Jungkook showing him, one day... alright tomorrow.
Muggle objects were prohibited inside the school but the boy whispered that his family had bewitched a few to work and now one of them he had hundreds of songs just for himself… an MP something. He didn’t catch it completely. It was crafty magic, he could agree on that.
_______________
The next day Hoseok was busy with extra training sessions of Quidditch, in preparation for the game. It gave them a good 2 hours where Yoongi was free and, because of Hoseok hogging the quidditch pitch, Jungkook was free as well. They met at the divination tower, a place that is 99% of the time empty. It was the perks of being on the 7th floor and all the stairs of school. Yoongi himself barely came here, it was too much of an effort to go seven floors up, especially when his own common room was in the dungeons, which actually meant one more floor to walk. There should exist a simpler way to go up so many floors.
That was the reason he arrived a bit breathless.
It helped he wasn’t in shape.
Jungkook was already sitting down with a blanket to stop the stone cold ground from freezing his bones. The tower was known to be very chilly as well. Besides him, there were several… things. He didn’t know the name of at least half of them. Maybe he had seen some on his trips to muggle towns, but Yoongi was never interested enough to question either their name or purposes. and who would he ask? His family was as pureblood as they came. They wouldn't know a single word.
Jungkook was excited, a little bit anxious to show his own things but happy Yoongi had accepted. It was that feeling of talking about things you love to someone who will finally listen, instead of ignoring you. He imagined this was not for everyone, most wizards don’t want to mingle with muggle objects, another big portion don’t like to go against school rules. Yoongi didn’t mind about both and it made the other happy so it felt pretty shitty to let him down. Yoongi was already a sucker for the puppy-eyed boy even if he had met him just the other day.
“ Alright, what do we have here Jungkook?” Yoongi asked as he sat down. This was an easy way for Jungkook to start rambling. He talked about electronic watches that told you the time without the pointers. Yoongi had a traditional watch but he could see why muggles used the other one, it was much faster and by Jungkook words, much more precise. There were magazines, no. Comic books.
Muggle drawings didn’t move but they felt dynamic, the way they were put together by an order of squares and long big words like ZAZZ. Jungkook loved Iron man, it was the only comic book he had at school. His father would send him more on a monthly basis with his own letters. He was a fan as well and they would talk about these superheroes a lot in their letters. The boy also told him, in this fictional world there were also wizards. But their magic wasn’t the same as theirs, the real one. Yoongi thought it was silly, drawing big circles in the air to move from place to place? apparating was much faster.
There were games and a small Nintendo where he could even watch movies, no, games? but they looked like movies. That one took forever to explain. It was very complicated and Yoongi still felt he didn’t get it in the end. His favourite though, was a weird rectangle white box. There was no screen like Nintendo thing but a white round button.
“ It’s an MP3” Yoongi blinked. That sounded weird and dangerous. Humans used abbreviations for dangerous things, like TNT. He knew that was dangerous. Besides, what could it do? There was nothing in it besides the big button. Yoongi asked him.
“ It plays music, I have like...200 songs in it I think!” That only made him even more confused. There were radios in the magical world, but music, songs were only sold on pieces of vinyl. Vinyl were big and didn’t come with many songs so it could be heavy. Yoongi himself had some back home of his favourite wizard singers. “ You just put on your earbuds and then you can listen to songs, people normally put on their favourite, I do too obviously, I just don’t delete the song after I fell out of love”
“ How does it work?”
“ My father bewitched it so I don’t need to worry about the battery, but you move songs from your pc to it, wait…” Jungkook moved around, pulling a cord that one end split into 2. The boy called it the earbuds. He also helped him put them on and with a soft touch to the round circle, music erupted from the machine which was stuck in his ear. The Slytherin boy yelped as he tugged on the cord. Those little things came out of his ear but the music still kept coming out of it.
That was… weird.
Jungkook let out a whine and immediately went to make sure he didn’t tug it too hard. “ Hyung! It's just music! you don’t need to act so scared!”
“... I wasn’t expecting it to be so loud and… inside my ears” He mumbled. What a curious object that it was. “ Let me try it again, I swear I won’t tug it “
The boy let out a huff but in the end, gave him the object again. Yoongi thinks Jungkook found this pretty hilarious deep inside. He knew he looked like a fool, trying to put the earbuds back in again and jabbing it too hard into his ear.
The thing is...He didn’t expect to love it as much as he did. Muggle music was different from magical one. There were more styles, there were different sounds he had never heard of and so, so many good singers. Jungkook showed him how to skip a song and how to find one he had enjoyed. There was actually a screen that the older boy thought was just a window to look inside the object.
“ that wouldn’t make sense, hyung”
“ Muggles don’t make a lot of sense half of the time, Koo”
“ I think Wizards make even less sense”
So, Jungkook did what he had promised before. He showed him rap and pop and rock and everything in the middle. The other objects were discarded to the side because Yoongi really, really loved this one and Jungkook really, really loved music too.
“ You know, the silence was one of the hardest things when I came here for school,” Jungkook said as the sun started to go down and they had to pick everything he had brought and chug them inside Jungkook pockets so they could go and eat dinner at the Grand Hall...7 floors down. Yoongi made a mental note to make sure to schedule their meetings in better places. This just could not do.
“What things?”
“ Not having music around me, I guess” The boy shrugged, lips turning downwards in a small pout. “ I always loved music and I really like singing and I know we have a radio at the Gryffindor common room, but it's not the same”
The Slytherin common room didn’t even have a radio, he didn’t tell him though, afraid to make those lips go even lower. Jungkook had a powerful puppy pout.
“ Back home we always had music on... and muggle cities, I live in Seoul, it's always loud and noisy, each store has different songs on, there are people singing and dancing in the streets and, yeah, Hogwarts is really silent”
Yoongi didn’t know what to say. He didn’t have the experience the other had and Jungkook was...homesick. “ But, you know, you like this a lot and I know every song on it, so how about You keep it for a week and see if you really like it? You can put the cord inside your clothes and it shouldn’t be visible”
“ Are you sure? You obviously like this a lot, you know it’s fine, I can listen to music when we meet”
“ No, hyung, it's fine! I need to focus on the game and now I have a lot going on, music is still a bit of a distraction!” Yoongi looked at him doubtfully. But there were no second thoughts in the other boy's eyes. He slowly nodded, giving him a Thank you.
____________
That little machine was very addictive.
Yoongi learnt how to skip and how to increase and decrease the volume quite easily, it seemed it wasn’t hard at all. He had expected it to be complicated, kinda like that Nintendo object. This worked wonderfully.
Jungkook's musical taste was great. It became hard to let it go and honestly Yoongi didn’t. The songs were stunning and it made him want to write more. Especially poems. Maybe he did have a thing for rapping, or maybe just music in general. He would need to do a self-discovery journey or some shit like that, it’s what Namjoon called it.
What he didn’t expect was for Namjoon to know what the object was. To be fair, Yoongi had become a bit careless and was writing with the MP3 on the table in full view of anyone that came inside the room. On the other hand, it was a dead hour where most students had classes and every member of this club should’ve been busy. Hell, they had their schedule on the wall so everyone knew.
“ Yoongi, you have an MP3? I thought you didn’t know what muggle electronics were and wait, does it work?” Namjoon asked right above him, scaring Yoongi who didn’t even notice him entering the old classroom. The Slytherin boy let out profanities under his breath as he moved to close his hand over the small thing to hide it from view.
“ I don’t know what you’re talking about”
“ You’re literally holding it, I can see the cord from the MP3 to your ear” Right, those were visible as well. Yoongi was fucked, wasn’t he? It wasn’t even his...Jungkook would be mad - mostly sad - if he lost them...because he wasn’t careful enough.
Namjoon didn’t look angry. He actually looked happy and curious. Bless the older boy.
“ ...right, uhm sorry,” Yoongi said, sighing at the end, there was no point in hiding it. " Please don't tell anyone hyung, you know Filch would just take it and never give it back"
" I won't do that? Yoongi, why would I snitch you out? " Namjoon moved around the table, sitting on it and picking the Muggle object up. "I haven't seen one of these for years! Yoongi, I didn’t know you liked muggle things? MP3 are so old too... “
Were they? Jungkook MP3 was in such pristine quality he thought it was a new technology. Maybe it was vintage… Merlin, if it was, the wizarding society truly was conservative.
“ Well… it's not mine, a friend lent it to me and now I really like it” He mumbled, just wanting to be over with. Namjoon won’t telltale to anyone. That doesn’t mean Yoongi was anything but annoyed... with himself. He fucked it up. Today he was lucky it was a friend but tomorrow it could be a teacher.
“ Do I know this friend? I thought Hoseok wasn’t much of a muggle technology type of person”
Namjoon was...Jungkook's friend. In fact, in these few days, he really got how deep Jungkook's fascination was for the older boy. He adored how he could maintain such a group at school while also being on top of every class. Namjoon was one of the best students at Hogwarts and everyone knew it. He also adored the older boy writing, by the many poems and texts he wrote with the inspiration from Namjoons work. So Yoongi thinks… it will be alright. Maybe it will even be a reason for them to talk more, which Jungkook would adore. Maybe it really is alright
“ Yeah, it’s uhm, Jungkook, it’s Jungkook’s” Yoongi gave him a small smile.
Namjoon was surprised, his eyebrows went up and he let out an “uh” under his breath. Yoongi understood, the boy was shy and when you meet him, he doesn’t even look up much. No one would guess it was him. The thing is, Jungkook did change his behaviour as he spoke and became a lot more outgoing. He liked to take risks.
“ That’s cool, I’ll talk to him after” When he noticed Yoongi blinking in surprise, and shock if he was honest to himself he added. “ Don’t worry, he isn’t in trouble, I just really like music and someone having it here inside the castle is
rare.
”
And that’s how he found Namjoon and Jungkook the next day, a few hours before the game. They were in one of the corridors, sitting down and talking quietly. Yoongi didn’t mingle around, he had promised to be with Hoseok before the game. But he definitely heard them talking about someone called Ariana Grande and J. Cole? He knew the names too, only by the artists on Jungkook MP3. Yoongi gave back the technology and hurried back to meet Hoseok. His week had passed and with the way, they were talking he knew they would appreciate listening to those songs.
Yoongi normally sat down at his own table, with his house. While he loved that he had interhouses friends, he never felt the need to go and sit down at the other tables during breakfast. This time it was very hard to do so. Hoseok, as his cheerful self is, was standing on the bench, waving for Yoongi to come as a lighthouse does to a boat. A weird metaphor, he even thinks it's backwards, but that was what came to the boy’s mind. He tried to be fast, a blush coming up to his cheek as he felt dozens of eyes over him. It was hard to miss someone doing such things. Besides, the school was used to be Park Jimin and Kim Taehyung the ones to call the attention to themselves, not Min Yoongi and Jung Hoseok.
“ Oh my Merlin, Hoba, get down” Yoongi hissed, pulling on the other robe so he could sit down. Yoongi sat, lowering himself from the view, if he could he would’ve slipped right under the table. Merlin, he hated unnecessary attention. Hoseok, on the other hand, thrived through it. Or he simply enjoyed his friend being embarrassed, if he went by the bubbly laughter at his expenses.
“ It’s been so long since I saw you, Yoonie!”
“You’re the one that was busy, Hobi,” Yoongi said, clearing his throat and to hide his red cheeks, he started to eat. If he had to sit down, at least he would use this time for something useful.
“ I was busy for a good reason!”
“ Yeah, Quidditch, now you gotta eat, the game is in 3 hours and I know you won’t be able to eat lunch” Yoongi didn’t even wait, he just picked two spoonfuls of rice to fill Hoseok’s bowl and pulled a few side dishes so they were closed to his friend. Hoseok gave him a pout but when he noticed he wouldn’t back down the boy started to eat his food slowly. “ Look, I know you’re nervous, especially with a new player being thrown at you like that…”
Hoseok made a face. He wasn’t happy. A substitute player was a new idea in Hogwarts, for the students who got hurt and for the teams to not be damaged because of such things. It made sense in Yoongi's mind, however, he got it, changing rules suddenly sucked for the enemy team.
“ But you’re good, you’re better than good! You were chosen as the captain and even if Jungkook has any talent in Quidditch, you have a team that has been training with you for what? 2 years?”
Hoseok nodded, eyes shining slightly as he listened to Yoongi words.
“ Then you don’t need to worry. Your team is good and you never lose when I’m cheering for you”
Hoseok smiled as if he had gained all the energy he needed. He started to eat with new vigour, so fast Yoongi even let out a chuckle. His friend didn’t need much to change his mood at least.
Yoongi made sure the other ate everything. He also made sure to pack a banana for later. If hoseok wouldn't eat lunch he would at least eat this, or yoongi would force it down his throat. The end result would be the same and that's what matters to yoongi anyway.
Hoseok reached out and held his hand as they had left the grand hall. His friend had always enjoyed the physical touch. It was something that calmed him, that kept him steady and down to earth - or so he had told him a few years ago - and Yoongi silently enjoyed it too. Hand holding did not hurt anyone, especially not himself. People would just not see him being the one to initiate it.
" I'm mostly worried that Jungkook will catch the snitch," Hoseok said, voice small. He truly was worried, poor thing. " I know our seeker it's not that good, he's pretty slow to see it and catch"
" The answer is pretty simple, isn't it?" Yoogi's voice was calm as if the answer was obvious. The other boy looked at him with curious eyes, as if begging for him to continue.
" You just need to keep making goals, Hoba." That was obviously not what Hoseok wanted to hear. He let out a small whine and slapped yoongi back without real force. He at least hoped the use of his nickname - only used in special moments - would help him calm down.
" No shit, captain obvious!" He lets out, giving another whine. Yoongi chuckled under his breath and with a high pitched voice said:
"I'm serious though! It's that easy"
It wasn't easy per se . A snitch was valued to about 150 points, while each goal only counted 10. That meant Hufflepuff had to keep scoring and not let any point from Gryffindor pass through the posts. Just 1 goal and it could mean the end of the match for Hufflepuff. Such a small difference can greatly impact a whole house.
They walked until they were outside beside a century-old tree. There was time and it was best for hoseok to stay close enough to the quidditch field. Plus, outside also calmed the other, he really liked the horrid plant classes - it was such a Hufflepuff thing of his.
Yoongi had time to tell him about this somewhat unusual week's worth of news. They generally don't change, writing, classes and studying but this time, with learning so much new muggle information, making new friends and discovering so many new songs, the week had felt much busier than normal.
Hoseok was a good listener. He even came to say that after the game is done after Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors were not against one another, he would love to meet Jungkook. Even if it was to listen to some music. That was something Yoongi greatly liked about Hoseok. Even with rivalry, even knowing that this game mattered quite a lot for the overall tournament, Hoseok wasn’t petty. He would love to befriend Jungkook, even if maybe he will be the reason they lose everything. Yoongi thinks it is really cool on his part.
And it truly showed that Hoseok was 100% Hufflepuff, in Yoongi's opinion.
The Slytherin boy sat down at the front line, the best seats he could find. He was still in his Slytherin attire but he held a small Hufflepuff flag to show support to his best friend. He must say he knew enough about the sport to understand what was going on, but it was still quite overwhelming. A game with 4 balls flying around with so many jobs to do and watch, it made just standing there and seeing it all happening quite tiring. The crowd around him didn’t mind it though. They were screaming the player’s names, applauding when a goal was scored. It’s been 6 years so Hoseok colleagues were more than used to having him in the middle of their own house.
Hoseok was doing great. It might be his best game yet of the season. The boy, a chaser, was scoring left and right. It seems Gryffindor keeper wasn’t at his best today and even Yoongi could see he was slightly shaking on his broom. The ferocity that Hufflepuff was showing was something different. Even he found himself sometimes screaming his best friend's name to cheer him on, something he definitely does not do.
Jungkook too was trying his best. He was clearly the best seeker between both teams and had seen the snitch a handful of times but for some reason or other, ended up not catching it. It was mostly because Hufflepuffs beaters always kept an eye on him, ready to send a bludge in his direction and force him to lose the snitch.
But beaters could only do so much.
The two yellow coated beaters threw two bludgers against Jungkook, Hufflepuff seeker was right behind him, his hand stretched as far as he could. Yoongi didn’t know what his plan was, pulling Jungkook broom was a foul and they could not afford such things. The air was tense, it was as if the whole crowd had silenced down, watching with attentive eyes to what was going on. Yoongi could barely see the small snitch glinting under the sun, flying away from the players.
At the end, Jungkook caught the snitch, almost falling off his broom with how much he was leaning forward over it. However, Hufflepuff won by only 10 points - just one goal difference - and the second the scores were said, Hoseok screamed in excitement from his place in the pitch, arms shooting up in victory and legs holding tight on his broom so he wouldn’t turn around. Yoongi clapped his hands with a big gummy smile on his face.
Yoongi didn’t see Hoseok right away when the game was over. It was quite impossible, as the other had a crowd of his own teammates and his housemates around him. That was fine with him. He knew there would be a party down at the Hufflepuff common room and Yoongi still needed to change before meeting him back inside the castle. They were friends for so long that there was no secret between them. He knew both where it was, and the passcode and , besides, most - if not all - of Hufflepuff students knew him by face and knew he was his best friend.
As many people would say both when he was still cheering his friend during the game and later inside the party, Yoongi was considered an honorary Hufflepuff.
Yoongi changed into more comfortable clothes and left his Slytherin attire back in his dorm. He would be celebrating another house win so he thought it was better to do this way.
When he opened the door, a small smile came to his face. There was a magical radio on the side on Witches FM and, like usual, the classics were on. Butterbeer was going around and he certainly could smell something different in the air.
Hufflepuff was known to be great at herbology for a reason.
The party lasted up until the late hours of the night. It had died down and only the older students were allowed to be at the common room as they laid on the large pouffes that were thrown all around the large round space. Yoongi ended up falling asleep in one, around 3 am with Hoseok on his side, legs were thrown over him, they didn't even need a blanket as the fire kept them all warm and cosy.
Fortunately, the next day was a Sunday so they didn’t need to wake up early for classes. Because, if it was during the week they were both screwed.
...Yeah, they definitely missed the breakfast hour and had to go to the kitchens - it was Hufflepuff corridor neighbours, no biggie - to get a few snacks so they could survive until lunch hours.
_____________
Seeing Jungkook again after the game, inside the HGT room was something he didn’t expect on a Sunday afternoon. He guessed with the loss, he puts himself on what he likes - for some is studying, for others are their hobbies - and that something is writing with Namjoon on his side, correcting a few papers and doing his own work.
Yoongi remembers after they had left the field, a taller Gryffindor student he knew vaguely by the name of Kim Seokjin had come and hugged the younger boy. They were probably friends. He should’ve come up to him. Yoongi grimaced to himself but swore next game he would cheer for Jungkook.
“ You did really well in the game yesterday, Jungkook,” Yoongi said, praising him. It was true and he had no problems saying it, even if he was cheering for the other team. Jungkook looked up, a pout coming to his lips.
“ I still lost, Yoongi hyung” It was in these moments he could see the age difference between the two of them. 2 years could sometimes feel like a gigantic leap.
“ Still, that doesn’t take away from your personal performance, does it? and it was just 1 goal, next game you can win” Yoongi pulled a chair so he could sit down beside his two friends.
“ Even if we do, we can only run for second at most,” Jungkook let out a sigh. Winning the quidditch tournament and the house tournament must mean a lot for the boy with the levels of distress he could sense coming from him. He knew some students clearly loved it and it did bring a healthy competition between them all.
“ Second is better than third and fourth, so it could be worse and it could be better, so just… aim for the better option, yeah?”
Jungkook nodded but there was no way he was out of his funk. The sympathetic look from Namjoon told him enough. He had also tried and the boy was still slightly slumbering on his seat and a small pout was on his lips without a hint it would go away.
It did go away, however, it was not how he had thought it would be.
After two hours cooped inside their club's room, his best friend came to visit. They had promised one another to go together to the grand hall for dinner, and Yoongi didn’t notice the time flying by. Fortunately, Hoseok was more than used to it and had simply come to where he knew his friend would be. Jungkook widened his eyes in shock. Yoongi looked between the two. Waiting for something to happen. The game was just yesterday, he wanted them to meet on better terms when no hard feelings existed between them.
Hoseok's face split into a big friendly smile and instead of moving to his friend, he went to stand in front of Jungkook.
“ It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Jungkook, “ Hoseok chirped. He really was an outgoing and friendly person. “ yesterday match was really good, it's a pity you’re not a Hufflepuff because you really are a great player”
“ uhm…”
“ But it's fine, I do like to play against strong teams and now I know playing against Gryffindor will be a challenge if you stay in the team, and you know, I’ve heard a lot about you from Yoonie! we should go and do some laps on the pitch, to see who’s faster, uhm? That would be cool, I bet I’ll win though” Hoseok winked at the end, teasing the younger boy.
It was unexpected but Jungkook quickly befriended Hoseok, their friendship having a competitive strike right in the middle. Meeting Hoseok, and immediately having an hour to race quickly pulled Jungkook out of his funk. Much faster than both Namjoon and Yoongi could ever do with just words.
He just knew he would start seeing the young lion many more times than just at HGT headquarters.
