Facebook Staus: It's Complicated

Summary:

After Sirius changes his Facebook to 'It's Complicated', Remus sets out to find out what exactly he did to upset Sirius.

or

Sirius changes his relationship status to 'It's Complicated' with the hope of changing it to 'In A Relationship- Engaged', but doesn't tell Remus this. Remus freaks out and goes to Sirius.

Notes:

I'm not exactly sure how Facebook Status' work, but in this au, you can have the 'in a relationship' status, but you can specify with things like dating/engaged/married/etc.

This was a concept I came up with in the middle of the night and ran to my phone to write in my notes app lmao, I hope I did it justice :)

Enjoy! <3

Work Text:

Remus puts down his book, he hasn’t been able to concentrate on anything since Lily and James announced they’re expecting. He’s so happy for the two of them and the expression on Sirius’ face when he found out he was going to be a godfather made his heart melt. He picks up his phone and goes to Instagram. Sirius keeps promising he’ll teach Remus how to use it, but never has. He lets out a frustrated sigh and switches to an app he’s more familiar with: Facebook.

Sirius is convinced that Facebook is for the elderly and Remus must have an elderly soul to like using that godforsaken app, but Remus appreciates how easy it is to use and how he can connect with his relatives. Effie Potter is also an avid Facebook user and loves to post updates, tracking everything James and Sirius do, from doing the laundry wrong to pulling pranks on innocent people in public.

Remus goes through his friends' profiles, all of whom only have Facebook because of his pleading. Both Lily and James have new posts from this morning, their baby announcement. The comments are filled with congratulations from friends around the world. Marlene and Dorcas are on their honeymoon in Aruba right now. He goes to their profiles to see images of them having the time of their life at beaches of all types.

He goes to Sirius’ profile last, something he always does when he’s finished looking through Facebook. Sirius has only ever posted one picture on Facebook, it was after a fight they had where Remus was worried Sirius wasn’t alright with showing people he was in love with a man, specifically Remus. Sirius was hurt at this and wanted to show the world that he’s in love with Remus. So, he did what anyone would do, posted a picture of Sirius and Remus kissing with the caption “Remus and I say gay rights 💅🏳️🌈”. He had also put his relationship status to ‘in a relationship-dating’ after he made an account.

When Remus opens Sirius' account he doesn’t see any new pictures, as expected, but what he does notice is a change in his relationship status. He freezes. Seconds after, he gets a notification from Facebook which says, “Sirius Black has changed his relationship status to: it’s complicated”.

Remus’ throat closes and he feels like he can’t breathe. Sirius knows that Remus is checking Facebook right now, he must be in the other room. He knows that he’s looking at his phone right now, so he wanted to show Remus that he’s mad. He thinks about what they’ve done since they woke up together this morning. After waking up, they went to breakfast with James and Lily where they announced Lily’s pregnancy. After they returned home, they took a short nap together on the coach after they fell asleep watching the newest episode of Loki. Then, Remus had left Sirius sleeping to come and read.

Whatever Remus did, it must have hurt him badly. Badly enough to question whether or not their relationship should continue. Remus is well aware that ‘it’s complicated’ can easily devolve into ‘single’. Remus goes through their morning one more time before getting up to find Sirius. He has to make this right, he loves Sirius with all of his heart and plans to live the rest of his life with him, hopefully marrying him someday soon as well.

Remus stands up and stretches before opening the door to the living room where he can see Sirius is sitting. “Hey Siri.” Remus greets him softly as he sits next to him. “What’s up?” He asks. “What did I do?”

Sirius looks confused for a moment before sitting up abruptly. He cocks his head to the side and pulls Remus up to stand next to him. “What did you do wrong?” Sirius repeats. “Is this because I changed my status?”

Remus nods his head. Now it’s his turn to be confused, what else could he have been talking about. Sirius shakes his head and lets out a small laugh. “I did change my status, but that isn’t a bad thing.”

“Sirius, I know you’re note well versed in the world of Facebook, but this isn’t really a Facebook thing, it’s a real life thing. When a relationship is complicated, that’s normally a bad thing.”

Sirius looks up at Remus and shakes his head slightly. “Can’t it be a good thing?”

Remus smiles. Sirius can spin anything in a positive light which is one of the things Remus admires most about him. Whenever Remus gets in a self-deprecating mood, Sirius is always there to bring him out of it, he’s always there to make him feel happier.

“Sure.” Remus replies, still confused as to how a complicated relationship could mean anything, but that it’s failing. “Could you explain exactly how complications in a relationship could be a good thing and how that pertains to our relationship?” He asks.

Sirius chuckles. “You’re doing that Remus thing where you use big words when you’re upset.” Remus smiles, Sirius was the first person to notice this quirk of Remus’ and has never failed to mention it when it comes out. Sirius has heard it the most too, after all, he makes Remus the most upset.

Sirius kneels down and Remus looks away. Sirius really isn’t going to explain his Facebook status to him. He’s really going to stall by tying his shoe so he doesn’t have to tell Remus why their relationship is a good thing. Remus’ eyes begin to water when he realizes that Sirius is trying to end their relationship, but wants to let Remus down easy. He keeps his gaze set on the window so Sirius doesn’t see the tears in his eyes.

“Oi!” Sirius gets Remus’ attention. “You twat, I’m trying to do something here.”

Remus turns his head to see Sirius, on one knee, with a box extended. Remus inhales sharply. He thought Sirius was trying to end their relationship, not further it. Tears leak out of the corner of his eyes when he realizes that he and Sirius love each other and will spend the rest of their life together.

“Remus.” Sirius begins. Remus suspects that he and James have been practicing whatever speech is about to come together for weeks. He hopes James plays a good Remus. “We have been dating for 3 years now and I have loved you for 5. You have brought me more joy in the years that we have been together than I thought possible. My parents led me to believe that I was incapable of love, but you helped me unlearn that. You helped me past some of the darkest times of my life and made me feel like I was worthy of love and attention.”

Sirius pauses to stand up, attempting to get on Remus’ level, but due to obvious height differences Sirius still has to look up. “So that’s why I wanted to ask you, Remus, will you marry me?”

“Yes, Sirius, I will marry you.” Remus’ heart bursts with joy, he’s going to marry the man he loves.

“I changed my relationship status to ‘it’s complicated’ with the hope of changing it to ‘in a relationship- engaged’, but without your answer, I wasn’t sure what to do and as you’re the Facebook wiz of the two of us, I thought I should ask.” Sirius explains.

Remus laughs and pulls Sirius in for a kiss. He was never sure if he was going to have his own happily ever after, but since being with Sirius, it’s felt like everyday’s a happily ever after, now it can be official.
