Jiang Yanli slips out of her shoes with a satisfied sigh. She leaves them, as always, in the neat little rack by the front door, along with as much of the weight of zongzhu as she can. The summer heat does nothing to make long meetings more pleasant.
Zixuan is in Yunmeng this week, though, and her nose tells her that, specifically, he’s in the kitchen. She pads in that direction, feeling her mouth curve into the truest smile she’s worn all day.
When she enters the kitchen, she’s greeted by a gorgeous bouquet in a vase on the table, a riot of pink, purple, and blue blooms. Tucked into the arrangement is a card printed with an image of a rainbow and the message, “Happy Pride!”
“A-Xuan,” Jiang Yanli says, “you are too sweet.”
Arms snake around her middle as her husband wraps her in a hug and plants a kiss in her hair just above her ear. “I missed you,” he says simply. “Plus, I’m very proud of my badass bisexual wife.”
She laughs and leans back into his embrace. “I’m not sure that’s quite what that means,” she teases. “You just like an excuse to give me flowers, I think.”
“Always have, always will,” he says, giving her a squeeze. “Now let’s round up our kids and eat. I made some of your favorites!”
Over the cheerful chatter of a lively family dinner, Jiang Yanli looks at the flowers and smiles—she couldn’t be more proud of the life they’ve built.
