As Ladder 19 pulled up to the scene of the three-car pile-up, majority of the personnel were ready for the day to be over with, as they were all on the tail-end of a non-stop 48-hour shift from hell.
“Alright people, let’s do this,” called out newly appointed Captain Theo Ruiz jumps out of the ladder truck and starts to call out orders to his crew, “Herrera, Bishop, Gibson, get on the motorcycle. Miller, Montgomery, Hughes, you’re on the car. Sullivan, Warren you’re with me on the pick-up.”
“Copy Cap,” Andy called out as she and Maya grabbed the medical kit from the Aid Car as hurried after Jack in order to check on the condition of the motorcycle driver.
Travis glanced around the street and couldn’t believe the scale of the accident that had been caused by someone running the red light, “people need to learn to follow traffic lights,” he grumbled as and paused Vic the requested C-collar, “here you go.”
“Thanks,” Vic responded as she pushed herself slightly into the passenger’s seat so that she could secure the collar around the patient’s neck, “so, I’m going to go ahead and place this neck brace around your neck in order to help protect you until we can get you to the hospital to make sure that there’s no risk of a spinal injury, or possible internal bleeding., alright?”
“Ok,” a feminine voice responded causing Travis to jolt back slightly, he recognized that voice but from where, he wondered to himself as he moved back in order for Miller to move the gurney into place.
“Ma’am, we’re going to lift you onto the stretcher now,” Dean stated as he motioned for Travis to move forward so that they could lift the victim out of the car and strap her down for transport to the hospital.
“A thirty- one-year-old female, possible concussion, spinal injury and internal bleeding,” Vic reported as she turned the patient over to the waiting EMTs.
Travis helped to load the gurney into the back of the Aid Car, and was stopped in his tracks when she reached out and grabbed his arm, “easy there,” he ordered as he helped Ben secure her down to the gurney.
“Ma’am, you need to relax,” Ben commented as he secured himself to his seat.
“You good?” Travis asked as he prepared to slam the doors shut.
“We’re good, Montgomery,” he replied as the doors closed shutting out the noise emitting from the accident scene.
“Emm….Emmett?” a raspy called out hesitantly.
Ben’s eyes widen slightly at her call, “You knew Firefighter Dixon?”
“19,” she offered as she struggled to talk over the oxygen mask that was placed over her mouth.
“That’s right,” Warren nodded as he reached over in order to check her monitor, “he was assigned to Station 19. So, how do you know him?” he questioned as he switched between monitoring her vitals and keeping his attention focused on her.
“Em…Emm,” she gasped, unable to finish the name.
“Emmett?” Ben guessed, smiling when she nodded that he had gotten the name right, “don’t worry he’s fine,” he assured her.
Alicia nodded as slightly.
“Woah, easy there,” Ben cautioned when she moved her head, “you need to keep your head still,” he warned as he tighten up the strap that was securing her head to the board in order to prevent her from paralyzing herself by accident.
“Emm…”
“Emmett isn’t with 19 anymore,” Warren stated assuming she was wondering where the other man was, “but I’m not the one to ask about him,” he paused as the Aid Car came to a halt in front of the hospital’s emergency doors.
“Who…”
“Trav…Montgomery,” he identified the other firefighter from earlier, “he’s in regular contact with him,” he kept the information pretty much cut and dry; he wasn’t sure who she was and what exactly her relationship was to Emmett.
“Promise,” she smiled slightly as the Aid Car was opened by the hospital staff.
Ben laughed softly as he jumped out of the Aid Car and trailed her into the emergency room.
Travis joined Ben in near the trauma room as they waited for the return of their gear, “how is she?” he questioned, still trying to remember where he knew the girl from.
“Miranda says that she should survive,” Ben replied as he gestured toward his wife who was treating their patient.
“That’s great,” Travis replied in relief, “know if I could just remember where I know her…”
“Trav!” called out a familiar male who was approaching from the Covid Vaccine area.
“Emmett,” Travis smiled at the sudden appearance of his boyfriend, “how?” he frowned slightly.
“I spotted the Aid Car outside and decided to check to see who was here,” he shrugged as he greeted Ben, “hey.”
“How are you doing?”
“I’ve been better,” he expanded when they threw questioning looks on their faces at his comment, “my car broke down, and I was going to call a towing company,” he shrugged as he pulled Travis’ cell phone from his pocket, “but I have your phone,” he complained as Travis’ eyes widen as he pulled Emmett’s cell phone from his pocket.
The pair blushed as Ben stated to laugh at their reactions, “oh, that’s cute,” he smirked as he spotted the identical phone cases and realized that there was literally no way to tell their phones apart from one another.
Emmett groaned as he was pulled into his boyfriend’s arms and tucked his face into the curve of his neck, “tell him to leave us alone.”
“Don’t think that’s how that works,” Travis laughed as Ben stood by watching their interaction, “listen Ben’s going to call for a tow truck to get your car brought to the station,” he glanced over at his fellow firefighter who was already pulling his phone out to make the requested phone call, “and you can come to the station with us while we wait for your car to be dropped off.”
“But the no visitors’ policy…”
Travis shrugged, “you’re not a visitor,” he countered, in fact no one at the station even cared that Emmett was no longer an active firefighter, after all Station 19 had learned at the lost of Captain Herrera, once a firefighter, always a firefighter.
Emmett smiled as he pulled Travis down for a quick kiss which he immediately lost control of when he was pulled pushed into the nearby wall and kissed like the world was going to end.
“Excuse me,” Miranda interrupted as she struggled to keep a straight face on as she broke up the couple, “maybe not in my hospital hallway?”
“Sorry, Doctor Bailey,” Emmett laughed as relaxed in Travis’ hold since his boyfriend didn’t appear to want to release him at all anytime soon, “it won’t happen again.”
“Oh, yes it will,” she countered as she gave the couple her patented glare that caused her husband to laugh as he returned to rejoin the others in order to retrieve their equipment.
“Did you figure out where you knew her from?” questioned Ben as they pushed the gurney out toward the Aid Car.
“No, idea,” he shook his head, “it’s driving me crazy.”
“Who?” questioned Emmett as he helped load up the Aid Car before getting into the back.
“The patient recognized Travis,” Ben shrugged, “she knew you as well.”
“Really?” Emmett frowned, as he tried to remember the various victims that he and Travis had helped when he had been a part of the SFD.
“Oh, well,” Travis shrugged as Ben pushed him toward the driver’s seat as he took the back with Emmett.
“Come on,” he complained.
“Not going to happen, man,” Ben countered as he jumping into the back next to Emmett, “drive,” he ordered as Travis slammed the door on him.
Meanwhile, Bailey was prepping her patient for surgery, don’t worry honey, you’ll be fine,” she promised as she went over the result s of the scan with her intern.
“Emm…”
“Emmett,” Bailey finished for her, “Ben, told me you knew Emmett from when he was a firefighter at 19,” she commented as she thought back over what Ben had told her of the younger male, “don’t worry he’s FINE,” she stressed, “he doesn’t work at 19 anymore though, if that’s the reason your worried,” she paused as a nurse approached in order to take her up to the OR, “now do you have any questions for me?”
“Tra…”
“Travis Montgomery?” she guessed, pleased when her patient nodded her head in agreement, “he’s fine too, he was with Ben when they brought you in,” she squeezed her hand, “now, can you tell me your name?”
“Alicia.”
