Work Text:
"Riku." Kairi's lips are pursed. "Which color looks best? Purple or orange?" She holds up two glittery butterfly hairclips.
Her friend looks up from the magazine he's looking through. "Orange." He goes back to reading about the popularization and commodification of the paopu fruit.
"Hmm."
Riku hears the faint sound of Kairi putting in one of the hairclips. He wonders if she took his advice or went in the opposite direction. She did that sometimes.
"It's cute," Riku states once he looks up. "It suits you."
She plops down next to the bean bag beside Riku. "Do you think I'm overdressed?" She picks at her nails. They're chipped and the only thing not 'glammed up' - as Selphie would put it - about Kairi.
"No. And even if you are, who cares? You'll look cooler than anyone else there."
Kairi shifts around. "Can ... can you dress up too? Please? I don't want to look overdressed when we meet everybody." Her violet eyes are pleading and really, Riku should say no, but he knows she's vulnerable right now because this is the first time she's ever really dressed up.
He holds back a sigh. "Okay, but just this once."
"Really?" She squeals and hugs him. Her hugs are bone-crushing. How is such a tiny girl so strong? "You're gonna look so cool!"
"Kai, if you want me to get ready, you're gonna have to let go eventually." He pats her back awkwardly, looking over forlornly at his unfinished magazine. Guess he'd have to finish it later.
About half an hour later Riku came out wearing a baggy light blue button up shirt tucked into his pants (people called it punk pants, but Riku didn't want to refer to them as that because it sounded kinda dumb to him). He put his hair up in a half-pony since it was already a little warm out.
"How do I look?"
Kairi's eyes brighten. "Bro, you look so good! You say no one will be able to take their eyes off of me, but I think they won't be able to take their eyes off of you!" She's bouncing up and down and there is this specific look on her face that tells Riku if he doesn't say something right away he'll regret it.
"Thanks. Now let's go. They others are waiting."
"Okay. Lemme get my purse real quick."
And she's off again. Riku shakes his head.
When she comes back, they head for the front door.
"Oh! Riku, Riku." He raises an eyebrow at her. "Thank you for dressing up with me."
He smiles a tiny bit. "No problem."
Turns out they are the best dressed at the function they're going to. Riku's not too sure if all eyes were on him though.
