Work Text:

Who said it was a good idea to marry Phoenix Wright, the only man capable of getting beaten up by a client and ending up in the hospital the very day of their marriage anniversary?

Miles Edgeworth, Chief Prosecutor of Los Angeles, was normally a very distinguished man, always wearing his suit in the most impeccable way. His silver hair was always brushed, shiny and healthy. His leather shoes were polished and void of any stain.

However, at this moment, it was not the case.

His suit jacket was crumpled by his hand, his shirt undone and the frilly cravat a tad too loose for his liking. His bangs were stuck to his sweaty face -screw this heavy sun!- and his glasses were askew. His once spotless shoes were now covered in dust because of the road work happening in the street of his office.

But he could not care less. His car was at the garage for maintenance; thus he had to run to the Hickfield Hospital to see his wounded husband.

Because yes , his stupid, dumb, imbecile, idiot, numpty husband had been assaulted by the real culprit behind his latest case.

He ran, ran, ran again. Always faster. His suitcase in hand started to feel heavy. He was panting and began to feel breathless; good thing he was still in top shape despite being 40 years old, else he would have already collapsed in the streets.

He finally reached the hospital after a good run of thirty minutes. Short of breath, sweating bullets and the face red as a sunkissed tomato, he ran to the counter and slammed his hands on it, speaking a bit too loud and looking a tad too menacing:

" WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!? "

The poor secretary jumped out of surprise and bowed to the prosecutor. After all, he was a celebrity in Los Angeles.

And his wedding with the famous Turnabout Terror Phoenix Wright enhanced this fact, since it was the first time a gay marriage was celebrated between a prosecutor and an attorney in their city.

" Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth! Don't worry: Mister Wright is alright. As always, he is quite the miracle survivor! "

" WHAT HAPPENED EXACTLY!? "

The poor blonde girl winced, biting her nails in the process.

" May-maybe you could discuss that with him directly? He is awake, he doesn't need any operation. We just need to keep him under observation because of a possible head trauma- "

" LEAD ME TO HIM ALREADY! "

" Y-Yes Sir! "

Okay, that was not very nice from him to be that blunt and angry. But we were talking about his husband and his untoward tendency to attract danger and get hurt in the process. He did not have time to be all nice and smooth when worry was eating him alive.

When they stopped in front of the (W)right door, the secretary quickly excused herself and ran away. Miles felt a pang of guilt: maybe he should have been nicer to the poor girl… He would apologise with some flowers next time.

However, something more important was waiting for him behind the door. So he unceremoniously slammed it and walked inside.

" PHOENIX WRIGHT! "

The spiky-haired man was laying on the hospital bed, a bandage wrapping the top of his head and some bruises covering his arms. Dressed in a blue hospital dress, he stared at the prosecutor, his eyes blank.

" Hum… Who are you? "

Wrong move, Phoenix Wright.

" OH NO YOU DON'T! " Miles Edgeworth shouted while rushing towards his husband, throwing his jacket and cravat on the nearest chair. " Don't even try to make fall into this stupid joke, you imbecile!

The lawyer nervously scratched his nape and grinned

" Oh man, guess I can't even fake amnesia with you. "

" Tch. As if you could forget me , your own husband! This is not the time to joke, you buffoon! "

" Wow, way to be self-arrogant, baby! " Phoenix smirked.

" You know full well that this is my coping mechanism, you idiot! "

" Try finding more synonyms to dumb, I am sure you can do it! "

" ... If I was not afraid to worsen your condition, I would have slapped the crap out of you, Phoenix Wright. "

The brunet laughed like a maniac and it strangely relaxed the silver-haired. He giggled along, his nerves finally calming down.

His husband was mostly well, his wounds were not too serious, and most importantly, he was alive .

He could finally relax.

Miles then sat on the bed; his thighs brushed against his significant other. He took his hand and gently caressed the skin underneath. It was bruised, but it would disappear at some point.

What happened, dear? I heard from Detective Gumshoe that the real culprit was actually one of the witnesses and assaulted you.

Yeah… ” Phoenix sighed, scratching his neck and gripping his husband's hand tighter. “ Turned out it was my client’s childhood friend who killed the victim. Pure jealousy, as often: they were both in love with her, but she chose my client. When I presented the evidence leading to his guilt, the witness snapped and jumped over the defense bench to attack me. Didn’t even have time to retaliate and he ended up beating me shit out of me.

Guess you are not as agile as you were before, darling. ” Miles sighed while putting Phoenix’s hand on his cheek, closing his eyes.

Yeah… Guess my age is finally catching up to my body! ” the spiky-haired sniggered.

Indeed. However, I can relate as well: the run to this hospital has nearly given me a heart attack.

We’re old, Miles. Good thing we have each other!

Indeed, my dear. ” the silver-haired smiled.

There was an appeasing silence surrounding them: only the occasional chirping of robins disrupted the calmness of the room. Miles had made himself more comfortable, now laying next to his lover, their hands intertwined and their heads resting against each other.

Childhood friend, huh. ” the prosecutor finally whispered, more to hear his husband’s voice than to strike the conversation.

Yes, not everyone has the chance to marry their childhood friend, it seems.

Phoenix smiled at this and turned his head a bit to come for a tender kiss.

I’m sorry for having ruined our anniversary, babe… ” the spiky-haired murmured, his puppy eyes shooting daggers at his lover’s heart.

Darn, he looked so adorable.

Thus, Miles sat up, moved to face the other and took Phoenix’ head into his hands; his thumbs caressed the cheeks beneath and he kissed the entirety of his loved one’s face.

You are the one who barely escaped danger and yet, you are apologising for ruining our anniversary. I am just happy we can celebrate another year together, walking towards eternity.

I never thought you were the romantic type, but you are even worse than me in that matter! ” the brunet laughed, hiding his teary eyes behind this uproar.

Says the one who is almost crying now… ” the silver-haired giggled. “ But it is true that I am quite the romantic type, but only with you, darling.

They both stared at each other for some seconds, smiling to their hearts’ content and enjoying this moment of peace.

But I still have your present, though! ” Phoenix beamed at Miles, his grin reminding him of a field of sunflowers under the bright summer sun.

He rummaged through his trousers’ pocket and pulled out a small velvet box from it. He opened it slowly, revealing a beautiful white gold locket, and handed the pendant to his husband.

Miles was taken aback, dumbfounded, the feelings and emotions pouring into him. And it got worse when he opened it: it bore a beautiful picture of Phoenix, Trucy and himself, smiling like crazy during their wedding, the three of them hugging each other and looking more than ever like a family.

Darling, this is-

Just a small thing. But I remember you wanted the pic on your desk. I thought you would like to have it around your neck as well.

... Phoenix, my love, how do you manage to always make me fall in love more with you everyday?

Heheh! ” he grinned. “ You’re a lucky man, right?

At least luckier than a certain lawyer who keeps on getting dragged into accidents.

Phoenix stuck his tongue out and pouted, making his significant other giggle.

I may be unlucky in that matter, but on all other matters, I am the luckiest man ever!

The smile he saw on Phoenix’s face made him smile in return. Well, this was not the worst anniversary, after all.

And he still had his husband’s present to give him, but this would remain a private thing between them.
