Sometimes I feel like I’m stuck on a ferris wheel. One minute I’m on top of the world, then the next I’m at rock bottom. An iconic line from a paragraph that Victor’s one and only advice giver wrote.
This was Victor’s chance. To go to the Winter Carnival and ask the love of his life to ride the damn ferris wheel with him. Planning it all out was the easy part. Now he just had to actually do it.
Victor put on a nice polo and threw a nice jacket over. He slicked his hair back with almost the rest of the bottle of hair gel. Maybe he went a little overboard, but he had to impress this person he was madly in love with. He finished off his look with a nice pair of sneakers. ‘Nice.’
When he walked out of his room, he noticed his sister in her room, getting ready for something. He walked into her room. “Pilar, what are you doing?” He asked with a heavy enunciation on the ‘what.’
“Getting ready for the carnival. Mom and Dad are making us go as a family,” she groaned. She finished putting on mascara and threw on a Billie Eilish shirt.
“Mom’s going to freak if she sees you wearing that. Especially to a family outing,” Victor explained. He raised his eyebrows and looked at his sister.
“I don’t have any other clothes to wear!” She threw her hands up as she turned around and rummaged through her closet.
Victor walked towards her closet. He pulled out a black, starry button up. “What about this? With a white shirt underneath. Leave the shirt open?” He questioned with a shrug.
Pilar nodded. “Fine. Ugh, you people and making me change,” she muttered. She grabbed the shirt from Victor and shoved him out.
“I’m just trying to help you not get in trouble!” He yelled before stumbling out of Pilar’s room. He headed out to the kitchen where he saw his mom.
“Oy, mira que handsome!” Isabel, Victor’s mom, exclaimed. She ran over to Victor and gave him a hug. She kissed his cheek. “Don’t be home too late! Oh, and Felix is waiting outside for you. He said he’d wait outside,” she explained before sending her son off to go have fun.
“Thank you. I’ll see you later! Love you!” Victor smiled as he went to leave.
He opened the door, walked out, and saw Felix chilling by the stairs. “Hi Felix, you ready?” He questioned.
Felix turned to see Victor. He smiled. “Wow, looking sharp, Victor,” he clicked his teeth. “Of course I’m ready. I’m like ten steps ahead of you, buddy!”
Victor walked alongside Felix and they headed to the Winter Carnival. When they got there, Victor’s jaw dropped. “Holy shit, this place is awesome!”
Felix raised his eyebrows, then dragged Victor to the ticket booth. “Let’s get tickets, then I can get this bomb ass cider and you can get the churros!” He blurted out.
Victor nodded. When he went to the ticket booth to buy tickets, he took a deep breath. He was going to do it. He was going to ask the person he was in love with to ride the ferris wheel with him. He was nervous to the point where he was shaking when he took the tickets from the woman at the booth.
He walked over to the churro tent and bought two, one for him and one for Felix. He and Felix met up near the middle of the carnival. They each traded a drink and a churro. Victor drooled over both the delicacies before taking a bite and a sip from each. He sighed in pleasure. They were so good. Best thing ever.
Out of the corner of his eye, Victor noticed his love. “Shit shit shit!” He mumbled under his breath. He ran behind a tent and sat down. At this point, he was half done with his cider and fully done with his churro. He took several deep breaths before ditching his cider and heading back out there.
Victor walked over to Benji, who was standing with his group of friends. He snagged Benji to the side. “Um, would you want to ride the ferris wheel with me?” He asked, his hands shaking behind his back. He stared at Benji.
Benji smiled. “Sure,” he agreed as he walked with Victor to the ferris wheel.
Victor was relieved. He was nervous that he would either make a fool of himself or Benji would reject him. The complete opposite happened. It was going perfectly so far. He walked with Benji towards the ferris wheel.
When the two boys got to the ferris wheel, Victor handed the man his tickets. He and Benji stepped onto the seat and sat down. Victor grasped his hands together, squeezing them tight. When the ferris wheel took off to the top, Victor laughed. “We’re pretty high up,” he said with a chuckle and a nervous sounding voice.
Benji looked at Victor. “You afraid of heights?” He asked.
“No, no. This is perfect. I love it so much. I’m totally not afraid of heights,” he said in a sarcastic voice. He was still shaking. He kept looking at the ground. “Everyone looks so small from here,” he muttered shakily.
“The key is to not look down How about you just look at me?” Benji suggested. He looked into Victor’s beautiful brown eyes. He looked Victor’s face up and down.
Victor nodded and turned to face Benji. He looked into Benji’s eyes and smiled. He saw Benji look him up and down, so he took a breath. He not-so-subtly stared at Benji’s lips. When he leaned in, he noticed Benji did too.
They attached their lips. Warm, soft lips against warm, soft lips. Top of the ferris wheel kisses, casual. Both of them sucked on each other’s lips like there was no tomorrow.
Benji laughed into the kiss, not breaking it. He moved his hands to cup Victor’s face. He rubbed Victor’s cheeks. He felt Victor grab his face and he melted. Victor felt and tasted so good.
After a good three minutes of kissing, the boys detached their lips from each other.
“Wow, th-that was amazing,” Benji stated. He grasped Victor’s hands to hold them in his own.
Victor nodded in agreement. In his mind, he said, Fuck it. “You know, I’ve had something weighing on me for a while. I just gotta say it and admit it. I- I’ve been in love with you since I bet you, Benji,” he blurted out before taking a long breath in. He looked so terrified.
Benji’s eyes widened. “Hey, calm down. Don’t look so scared,” he reassured. He held Victor’s hands tighter. “I’m in love with you too. I just didn’t know if you were gay or not. I didn’t want to fuck anything up,” he explained. He placed a soft kiss on Victor’s cheek.
“Really? Wow, I didn’t know. And as for me being gay, let’s just say I didn’t know I was either until I met you!” He laughed before returning the favor and kissing Benji’s cheek back.
Benji laughed. “Wow, really? I guess I’m flattered?” He said with question. He looked into Victor’s eyes again and placed a soft peck on his lips.
Victor too laughed. “Hey, you should be. That’s a big thing to be a cause of!” He teased. He smiled after Benji kissed him. “So, uh, what does this make us?”
Benji took a breath. “Well, you’re single, right?” He asked. When Victor nodded, he responded, “I am too, so I guess that makes us boyfriends?”
Victor nodded again. “Boyfriends,” he repeated. He kissed Benji quickly before the ferris wheel started moving again, this time to the bottom.
When they reached the bottom, they got off. Victor noticed Felix waiting at the bottom. He rushed towards Felix, panicking.
“Listen, Felix, before you say anything. I’m gay. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, I just had to accept myself first. And, Benji is my boyfriend now. You probably just saw our make out sesh on the ferris wheel,” he blurted out. He watched Felix process everything.
“Victor, calm down. I was just going to say ‘congratulations.’ Congratulations on your first kiss and assumed boyfriend, which now I know he is your boyfriend. It’s okay that you didn’t tell me, you weren’t ready. I understand. I’m not mad, I’m your best friend,” Felix reassured. He leaned in to give Victor a hug.
Victor exhaled. “Thanks, Felix. What do y’all say? We go get some more churros and cider, then we head home. That sound good?” He asked Felix and Benji as he grabbed a hold of his boyfriend’s hand.
Both Felix and Benji nodded and the three boys headed off to get snacks.
