Work Text:
Kagami Tsurugi whipped around. “Adrien, I need this! I must achieve my goal, or what will my work have been for?”
Adrien Agreste grabbed her hand; she tried to rip it free but he still held it. “For learning, Kagami. You will work yourself to death on this project. I know you want to achieve, but look at yourself! You’re barely sleeping, barely even standing! Forgive me for being harsh, but it’s what you need to hear. Please listen to me, Kagami. You’re my last hope and I can’t lose you.”
“I- Adrien -” she looked away, a pained expression on her face.
“Just listen. Why do you think I can’t bear to see you leave? Because every time, that night comes back, and I think I’m going to lose you.”
This time Adrien let her hand go.
-------
That night . The night the akuma split them apart in the fog.
“Adrien? Where are you?”
“Kagami!?”
And then she was gone, and Chat Noir spent the akuma attack running through the mist for the girl he loved, never to find her. Thinking the worst. Ladybug ended the battle by herself, coming back to a wrecked Chat.
He wouldn’t tell her what was wrong.
Of course the cure would bring Kagami back but she had been gone for that amount of time and nothing would ever make the memory leave his mind. Of her being gone. Of there being no hope.
-------
“I just- I just need you to be safe.” Adrien begged.
“Who are you to talk about being safe?” Kagami accused. “You’re the one that catapults yourself off buildings on a daily basis!!”
“I- yes, but-”
“Why is that any different? You have your job, and I have mine. Besides, do you think I don’t worry for you? Do you think it isn’t hard to watch you risk your life for the city?”
“Point taken. I could do with being less reckless,” he admitted. “Just… ease up a little? Take it a little more slowly, for me. You’ll still get to your goal, I promise.” He took her hands again; she did not attempt to pull away.
“And you’ll do the same?”
“And I’ll do the same.”
“Okay, Adrien,” Kagami smiled, a glint in her eye. “But you’ll see more of the dragon yet.”
