Work Text:

Suna has always been the type to accept whatever is handed to him. He doesn't complain about his already mediocre life or boast his achievements. He'd rather just be whisked away in whatever direction the wind takes him.

He can't understand people who are always whining about something or the other, where do you get so much negativity from? What puzzles him even more, is people who are overly passionate towards anything. The kind to spend countless hours practicing and perfecting whatever craft they set their mind on, breaking bones and collecting bruises like they're a scouts badge. These types of people are an anomaly. He knows the feeling of doing something you love, sure. But he has no idea how people jump leaps and bounds just to achieve perfection, which is already unattainable.

He settles. He's good at something? Great! He doesn't have to put in much effort. Another thing isn't his cup of tea? That's okay, he has different cups to drink from. This is how he spends most of his life. Even volleyball doesn't make him want to push himself to his limit at every match they play. That's why the skateboard his sister bought for him has made his whole world turn upside down.

The thing is, he thought nothing of skateboarding up until that point. He hadn't even bat an eye at all the graffiti covered walls and drift marked pavements around his neighbourhood. His sister bought him a plain board and some stickers and spray paint, for him to "do it yourself" aka she had no idea what her apathetic, snarky brother wanted for a board design so she opted for shoving that problem onto said brother himself.

Suna spent a good 15 minutes looking up different graffiti tutorials on YouTube only to give up and spray paint his entire board black and then use the gold marker to put quotes from the dumbass duo (read: miya twins) on them. His thought process was "if this gets lost somehow at least someone will have a good laugh out of it"

He then looked up the easiest tricks to learn on the skateboard, and found a multitude of videos, but the comments were filled with people saying "poser".

Ah, so the skating community is like that. Good to know, it seems he won't be interacting with anyone else on a skateboard.

Between school and volleyball practice, he didn't get much time to learn skateboarding until a few weeks later. He had just gotten through finals and Inarizaki granted them a well deserved vacation. So, the last day of school had him thinking about his untouched skateboard again.

Returning home after school, his parents gave him a much later curfew so he could hang out with friends or essentially do whatever he wants with his time outside. However the first thing on his agenda was a long nap. Straight to his warm bed he went.

He woke up late evening and decided to check his phone. There were a couple messages from osamu, asking if he's free before the last message that read "nvm ur probably asleep". Well that solves that. There was also a whole spam from Atsumu which he could not be bothered to open right now, when he just woke up and feels all woozy. Osamu would take care of the headache that is his twin. He thought for a bit of what he could do next when the black and gold board caught his eye in the corner of his room.

Why not? Couldn't hurt to try.

He thought as he snagged his board and headed out, not before grabbing a snack to eat on the way and his ipod and headphones.

He walked until he reached a park that was safe enough for a beginner skateboarder. He put his go to playlist on shuffle and as the indie tunes played out, he recollected the information from YouTube tutorials he had watched weeks ago and tried getting familiar with the board. It took a bit of time, as any new venture would. He managed to get comfortably stable on both feet within half an hour. He doesn't know if that's a good time but it doesn't really matter to him.

Objective one: complete.

He then tried pushing himself forward with his right foot. All that came from that is a comical flailing of hands and a board slipping from underneath him. This is gonna take a while.

He isn't one for nitty gritty practice, but he also isn't one for giving up on the first day. So he kept going.....

......For the entirety of his two month vacation.

He got pretty good at cruising around, if he did say so himself. Eventually he learnt how to do an ollie and a few more tricks that he could not for the life of him remember the names of.

His favorite time to skate was definitely late evening or sometimes midnight when he'd sneak out.

The midnight sessions were something else. He never thought a sport that he spent hours sweating and falling over would ever make him feel free. And yet here he was, midnight of his last day of vacation, having school in a few hours, having to resume to normal life, to fall back into rhythm with assignments and classes and volleyball, in the same park as the first day.

Tomorrow, he will go back to being an apathetic, non passionate, snarky Suna. But tonight, on this piece of carved wood that's carrying all his weight, he feels more liberated than ever. He feels invisible in the best way possible. He's not tied to any worries, he's not tethered to anything that makes him, him . He's not Suna trying too hard for once in his life, no. He's nobody, just experiencing a moment. He's an observer, at the sidelines, just existing to be overlooked.

It doesn't bring him fear, quite the opposite. He enjoys the sound of calloused tyres scraping the concrete, thrives in the sharp and cool wind hitting his face in full force as he speeds through his path. The thrill of it has his blood pumping and an involuntary smile spreading across his face. Each of his senses are on an all time high with the stimulus he's getting. Sounds of leaves rustling while his skateboard slices through the otherwise quiet night, the wind taking up his airway, the weather sending shivers down his spine, his mouth being unable to close with all the laughter and wind, and his eyes that capture the image of his adventure which he later engraves into his memory.

He could do this forever, he thinks.
