Chapter Text
You were sitting outside the volleyball gym shivering. Your breath could be seen with every exhale. The temperature had dropped significantly since earlier and your jacket wasn’t keeping you warm. Not to mention the skirt you were required to wear left your legs bare. It was the third of December. Only roughly one month till exams. You were waiting for your best friend who was currently at volleyball practice.
You were originally studying in the library, but it closed a while ago. You knew her practice would end soon, so here you were freezing while you waited for her. You checked the time on the watch that was on your wrist. She was late, but it made sense. The boys Karasuno volleyball team had just lost the tournament to Aoba Johsai who then who lost to Shiratorizawa. The boys hadn’t taken the lost too well and were working extremely hard to make it to the spring nationals. That in turn caused your best friend to have longer practices too since she was the manager. You heard the gym door open next to you. “Goodbye Kiyoko,” a series of male voices said. You watched her throw one last wave over her shoulder before shutting the door behind her. You stood up and picked your bag up off the ground slinging it over your shoulder.
“You didn’t have to wait,” Kiyoko said.
“I wanted too,” you replied.
“You’re shivering why didn’t you wear a warmer jacket?” she asked concern laced in her voice.
“I didn’t realize the temperature would drop so much,” you said. Rubbing your arms trying to create heat from the friction. Kiyoko sighed before setting her bag on the ground. She pulled something out of it and threw it at you. You managed to catch it. You held up it up. It was one of her sweaters. It was black with the word Karasuno written across the front with white letters.
“Are you gonna put it on?” she asked picking her bag back off of the ground. You quickly put it on. The sweater smelled of her. You quickly jogged to catch up with her.
“Thank you,” you said.
“No worries. How long were you waiting for me?” she replied.
“Not long,” you lied. You didn’t want her to worry, but the library closed over a half an hour ago and you’ve been waiting for her since.
“Well next time come inside. I’m sure the team won’t mind,” she said. They wouldn’t mind, but you probably would. You knew some of them, mainly Tanaka and Noya, constantly flirted with her and honestly you hated that.
“Yeah, okay,” you replied with a smile.
Just as you reached the school gates snow started falling form the sky. Both of you paused. She looked up into the clouds meanwhile you held out your hands and watched as the snowflakes landed on your hands and immediately melted. Kiyoko pulled an umbrella out of her bag. You looked up when the snowflakes stopped landing on your hands and noticed Kiyoko holding an umbrella over the both of you. “How do you fit all this stuff and your school work in that bag?” you asked referring to the umbrella and the sweater you were currently wearing.
“My stuff is just organized and not shoved into my bag carelessly,” she replied giving you a pointed look.
“Hey it’s organized! Organized chaos at least,” you returned. She laughed shaking her head at you. Her laugh was so beautiful it caused you to smile and stare at her like an idiot. You looked away before she noticed. The two of you continued on your walk home.
“How’s preparing for the spring tournament?” you asked.
“It’s going well. I hoping to recruit a new manager for next year when I’m gone,” Kiyoko said.
“Well whoever you chose is going to have some big shoes to fill. You’re amazing…an amazing manager,” you said correcting yourself mid sentence. You glanced at her to get her reaction. She had a small smile on her lips.
“Thank you,” she said.
“For what? I didn’t do anything,” you said.
“For always supporting me,” she said. Kiyoko quit the track team in her first year in highschool. She couldn’t get over her last race from middle school. Her parents didn’t take her quitting that well at first. They tried so hard to convince to rejoin the track team. They were especially upset when she became the manager of the volleyball team. However through it all you supported her.
“What are friends for?” you said. The word “friends” nearly burned your tongue. The two of rounded the corner. Kiyoko’s house wasn’t much further. The two of you stopped in front of her house.
“This is me. Here,” she said trying to give you the umbrella. You pushed it back to her.
“You keep it. It’s probably going to be snowing tomorrow morning when you go to morning practice. My house isn’t too much further anyway,” you said.
“Are you sure?” she asked.
“Yeah I’ll be fine. I’ll bring your sweater to school tomorrow,” you said.
“Don’t worry about it. It looks better on you than me anyway. Goodbye (Y/n),” she said making the way up the steps to her door. If your face wasn’t red because of the cold, it was definitely red now. Whether she knew it or not Kiyoko definitely had an effect on you.
“Goodbye Kiyoko,” you said loud enough to hear. You waited till she was inside before walking away. You were lucky she didn’t look back at you she would have seen the blush spread across your cheeks. However even if she did, you could have pushed it off as the result of the cold temperatures. The snow was still falling at a steady pace and without the umbrella you felt it begin to stick to your hair. The walk was quieter than usual because your footsteps were muffled by the snow. As you neared your house, you attempted to slow your pace. You knew all that waited for you was an empty house.
Your dad is always away at work. You were convinced that he was a workaholic. It’s been like that since your mother passed away. You were convinced that he avoided coming home because he couldn’t look at you without being reminded of your mother.
Once you were in front of your house, you released a sigh. Your sigh was visible in the air. You walked up the sidewalk heading to the door, pulling out your keys as you did so. You unlocked the door, and stepped into the house. You flicked on the light by the door. You exchanged your shoes for slippers before flipping the light back off. You turned on the living room lights as you walked into the living room. You walked over to your mother’s altar in the corner.
“Hey mom. It snowed for the first time this year. I wish you could see it,” You said. You felt you phone vibrate in your bag. You dug through your messing bag until you nudged your phone with your hand. You pulled your phone out of your bag. It was a message from Kiyoko.
Kiyoko: Did you get home safe?
You quickly sent a reply.
(Y/n): Yep all good.
Kiyoko usually sent you these texts especially because she knew you would be home alone.
You weren’t really hungry so you turned the living room light off before going up the stairs to your room. You figured that you would mess around on your phone for a bit before studying more. You climbed up the stairs to your room. You opened the door to your room and flipped on the light switch before dropping you bag and flopping onto your bed. You rolled onto your side and turned on your phone.
Your lockscreen was picture of you and Kiyoko on her birthday last year. Your arms were wrapped around her while your chin rested on her shoulder. Both of you wore big smiles and were looking directly st the camera.
You unlocked your phone with your passcode 0106. You opened up Instagram. The first post in your feed was a post Kiyoko tagged you in. She captioned it, ‘Look what I found.’ It was picture your momo had taken back when you and Kiyoko were in middle school. The two of you built snowwomen together. Both of you even came up with their whole story even though you don’t remember what it was. You smiled at it. Kiyoko had her account on private, so only a few people saw it. Still it made you happy that she even posted it all. After a bit more scrolling, you decided to study a bit before preparing for bed.
