Work Text:

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a button that reset you to the age someone thought fondly of yourself? Say, like your family member with Alzheimer's? Think about it, a button for any given time they liked you the most? It would end discussions, stop with the ego battles, it would maybe change enough of your brain chemistry to make you stop caring about things your adult mind was made to care: expectations, money, chores, medications, mental stimuli. Only a small push and you would be yourself again

Yourself at age eight, let's say it, only worried about playtime, perhaps innocent enough to take your family member out of their apathy. Because unless they don't like children they probably wouldn't say no to a game with a small child. They could even enjoy themselves and have fun.

Or they could scold the kid, knowing their authority wouldn't be put to check. They could banish the nuisance into a room. They could serve food, drinks, play host as they found joy in doing for so long during their lives. They could carry on with the microaggressions for as long as their anger griped them. Because it was only the truth, a joke, or for your own good, "you don't need to make that face, now, child". Who cares that this violence won't do any favors to anyone after growing old and having to help out their parents. Their aunt. Their grandparent. When they're old and senile, but not senile enough to forget what they think it's right, and that they should be obeyed without question.

Who cares about stomping down on creativity when it isn't socially acceptable or the correct way of making money?

But you won't care anymore, remember, because you're eight. You want to know what's going to happen in the next cartoon's episode, what tomorrow will look like with the tests, recess and friends under the same teachers. You want to master the perfect drop on hopscotch. You want to know if the cutest person finds you cute or not and what the school gossip is saying.

You're eight, your clothes are picked for you. The food made is delicious. Your time is awesome and perfect even when it' s nighttime... because you will have your loved family member putting you in bed and wishing you a good night.
