Work Text:
“And at last I see the light,” Lucy is singing, with Angela’s perfect baby boy in her arms. The balls of her feet pushing with her heels going up and down never quite touching the ground as she swayed front and back in the rocking chair.
The trio of people and a very baby-friendly doggie had come over to do a whole house clean and baby watch while the Lopez-Evers went to a check-up and therapy session. Angela wasn’t just recovering from birth, but also her abduction. She had either clung to Wesley and her child obsessively or been about to drop off the face of the earth wanting to protect them for almost 4 months now.
Tamara was on cooking duty, Tim on laundry, and Lucy on lullabies until little Mattie stayed asleep. It was proving difficult without his parents holding him, so here Lucy sat, rocking back and forth, trying to keep the baby asleep so that his schedule isn’t completely ruined for days when his parents really didn’t need the stress.
“And it’s like the fog has lifted”
It had to be Tim, he was the only masculinely low voice that would be in the house, and it was known in the community that a lawyer, a cop, and a bunch of cop friends were constantly in and out, so it definitely wasn’t the weirdest Disney fan/burglar ever.
Tim kept humming as he entered the room with a basket full of baby clothes folded and ready to be put away.
Lucy kept going, “And at last I see the light, and it's like the sky is new.”
Tim gave her a smile, Lucy nodded her head like she wanted him to come here, but there wasn’t much closer they could get in the nursery.
“And at last I see the light,” Lucy reached for his hand and Tim rolled his eyes before joining in.
“And it’s warm and real and bright, And the world has somehow shifted, All at once everything looks different, Now that I see you”
They didn’t sound bad, in fact, Tim was pretty in tune. Lucy hadn’t spent long as a vocal coach, only one year of giving lessons. Childhood choir memories and a karaoke addiction were enough for her with a job she loved to fill her cup for a while now.
It was Tamara coming in with a, “Is that you… singing? Since when can you sing?”
Mattie stirred and opened his eyes fully again, Lucy gave Tamara a little glare out the side of her eye.
“You hear me sing all the time, now don’t speak so loud I’m trying to keep him asleep or at least resting with his eyes closed.”
“No, No, I meant Tim!” Tamara pointed, dropping to a whisper.
“I don’t usually, it’s never been something I’ve done in front of people.”
“Well, I’ve got some lunch for us if Mattie here would like to actually lay in his bed.”
Lucy tried to set him down, even if he was awake and aware when he wasn’t supposed to. Maybe she hadn’t tired him out enough with the play mat.
The instant cries were not good.
“Isn’t it a thing to let babies cry? You need to eat Luce.”
Lucy still picked Mateo up again.
“It’s a detached style and I don’t think Angela’s going for that. Besides, I hate that it teaches them that someone won’t come when they call, it’s the boy who cried wolf in reverse.”
Lucy extended her arm to lean herself into a balanced weight with the baby on her hip.
“Then we’ll eat with Mateo, won’t we buddy?” Tim reached for his Godson to give Lucy a break.
Halfway through sandwiches and a great macaroni and rice side dish that Tamara can’t remember if she had it in childhood or just came up with on her own, the topic of Mateo’s sleep schedule comes up again.
“I think he really did come out of sleep when Tamara woke him, he shouldn’t be too tired to go to sleep early and mess up their morning.”
Tamara teasingly bristled, “I didn’t wake him, he just realized that he was missing his first look at Disney!”
“He hasn’t watched tangled yet, he hasn’t watched anything, he won’t recognize the song if I sang it again probably. I was just running out of tunes and lyrics.”
“No, I mean you two.”
Tamara’s smug grin met her (for all intents and purposes) guardians and friend's confused eyebrow tilts.
“You were singing Disney and sang a duet. It’s fairytale 101, it means you’re in love and going to live happily ever after.”
Tamara flung back into a relaxed slouch in her chair like she had just declared a checkmate in some chess movie where it was all symbolism for intelligence and cunning.
“Well, it’ll be good for when Chen finally wears me down on the whole karaoke thing.” Tim goes with it.
“HA!” Lucy points, “So you admit you’ll do it with me one day.”
“Yes Lucy, there’s only so many times I can convince you not to go to your favourite bars when we go for drinks.”
“I knew you would come around, I don’t want to force you or anything but Tamara’s right. You have a great singing voice and we could kill it on competition nights.”
“Can I get that I was right on record?” Tamara chimes in barely making a dent in the chemistry going on between Tim and Lucy’s eyes.
“I already kill it on the scoring machines, Jackson is the weak link if it isn’t police work or racing, so you can be my new partner.” Lucy continued.
Tim just smiled and checked on the baby in his lap, “Alright, we’ll see how many drinks I need before I just start sounding like a TO with a mic and you still have to be my partner.”
“Deal”
Did they just make a competition a date? Or a date a competition? Tamara wasn’t sure, but Lucy deserved her Disney moments, not just the tragic backstories, and so did Tim.
They would be alright, they’d end up together happily eventually. They were Disney-worthy. Mattie seemed to agree with her as he smiled and giggled when she told him all these thoughts in her cutest baby voice, but maybe that was Kojo poking his wet nose into his tummy to keep getting pets from the soft baby hands.
All they needed was the Disney marriage, they already had the makings of the house, dog, and gaggles of kids they mentor like parents anyway.
