Ranboo was ripped away from his deep sleep, the two alarms blaring simultaneously in an attempt to wake the two boys. He watched as Tubbo rolled away from him to shut off his alarm while Ranboo did the same. When doing so, the first thing he noticed was a dull ache in his arms and legs. He shrugged it off before turning to Tubbo, who didn’t look like he slept at all.
“Hey honey, are you alright? You look a bit sick.” Ranboo spoke lightly, voice rough due to lack of use.
Tubbo groans before forcing himself into a sitting position. “Hey boo, I feel like shit. I don't know what’s going on but I feel really sick.” he managed to mutter, voice low and rough, seemingly from a sore throat.
“I’m sorry love, I’m not feeling too great either,” Ranboo spoke before pressing a kiss on the top of Tubbo’s head, “Maybe we could ask your mom? She might have an idea.”
After taking a considerable amount of time to get changed into their clothes for the day due to the sickness, the boys made their way to the main portion of the house. They easily found Tubbo’s mum in the kitchen, who was eating breakfast while sipping on her morning tea.
“Good morning boys, I wasn’t expecting to see you two awake at this hour!” she exclaims cheerily while turning to face the two, met with sickly pale skin and slight eye bags as opposed to the normal calm complexion of the boys. “You guys don’t look like you slept too well, everything alright?”
“We’re sick mum, I feel like shit and so does Ranboo. We figured you might have an idea since you teach people our age?” Tubbo replied groggily, voice still slightly gravelly due to the soreness.
As Tubbo said this, Ranboo felt a buzz in his pocket, signifying a message from one of his family members. He slid it out of his pocket and turned it on, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding when he saw the message was from his younger sister.
menace: hey
are you sick rn?
ranboo: what
how did you know
menace: remember how i wasn’t feeling good when we dropped you off at the airport
and you drank like half of my water bottle
ranboo: yeah? but what does that have to do with anything?
menace: i had mono
ranboo: you WHAT?
i can’t believe you gave me mono
you’re my least favourite sister
menace: i’m literally your only sister, loser
ranboo: ha ha very funny, thanks for the mono nerd
i feel like death
Ranboo puts his phone into his pocket and is met with a pair of confused expressions, curious as to who he was talking to. “That was my sister, she’s the reason we’re sick. I drank out of her water bottle before leaving, and she gave me mono.” The words are out of Ranboo’s mouth before he can think them over, both his and tubbo’s mum’s eyes going wide as the two of them realize what Ranboo has just said. Ranboo’s face quickly turns a crimson shade while Tubbo’s mum simply laughed before winking at her son, who smiled sheepishly in return.
The couple returned to the extension after the promise of warm soup was made by Mrs. Smith, who they both thanked before retreating to the main room of the extension.
The second the door was shut, Ranboo turned to Tubbo and a stream of apologies came from his mouth. “Bee, I’m so sorry I didn’t even think that mono is known as the kissing disease I feel awful, I’m so sorry I didn't want to out us-” Ranboo’s incessant muffling is cut off by sweet lips on his, his boyfriend’s hand grasping his shirt to pull him down. As they separate, Tubbo presses their foreheads together and looks deeply into Ranboo’s eyes.
“Hey, don’t worry. I know you didn’t do it on purpose, you’re alright. My mom already knows I like guys, and we aren’t as subtle as you think. Don’t worry, love, it’s all ok.” Tubbo whispered sweetly, leaning in for another kiss before he was cut off by his phone ringing.
The two sighed before Tubbo answered the call. “Hey Tubso! Are you guys on yourway? You said you’d let me know when you left but I haven’t heard from you all day!” shit, the vlog.
“Hey Tommy, I’m sorry but me and Ranboo are both really sick, so we won’t be able to make it. Sorry again, bossman.”
Tommy was surprisingly shocked by this, worry setting into his tone. “You’re sick? Do you guys have covid? Tubbo if you gave me covid I swear to-”
“Don’t worry, you definitely don’t need to worry about us infecting you.” Ranboo snarkily replies, causing Tubbo to giggle.
“Actually, I don’t think I’ll stop freaking out. Can you just tell me what you have if it’s not covid? How are you even sick?” Tommy pressed, not letting up any time soon.
“Well, I shared a bottle of water with my sister before I got on the plane to come here, and it turns out she had mono, and she gave it to me.” Ranboo replies, already accepting defeat.
“You got the kissing disease from your sister? That’s hilarious!” Tommy cries, and then goes silent for a few seconds. “Wait… If mono is mainly transferred through kissing… Oh my God.”
“Surprise..?” Is Tubbo’s response, while his boyfriend just chuckles nervously behind him.
“Good for you guys! I still hate Ranboo though, sorry.” The three of them all laugh before Tommy hangs up, grumbling about needing to change the video idea for today.
Once the call had ended, Ranboo immediately sweeps Tubbo clean off of his feet and back to the loft. They both lay back down, knowing they aren’t moving from this spot anytime soon. They reposition themselves to allow eye contact, their noses just barely touching.
“So…” Tubbo says, mischief in his tone.
“Yes?”
“Since we already have mono, there’s nothing wrong with us still kissing, right?”
Ranboo sighs dramatically, but immediately brings their lips together.
The next two weeks pass slowly and warm, like molasses. Days are spent kissing and bingeing the office, both of them explaining to their fans that they are taking a social media break to spend time together. It may not necessarily be a lie, and it’s much better than the alternative. The couple knows that most of their audience believe “they’re straight best friends and nothing more”, and twitter can’t handle that big of a shock right now.
The couple enjoyed spending so much time together without thousands of eyes on them, but they were incredibly excited to be filming a vlog with friends today. Tommy had decided to take George, Wilbur, and Jack to a trampoline park as a last minute vlog idea when Ranboo and Tubbo had called in sick, so now they were fulfilling the original plan. There would be three teams of two, and they would all compete in various challenges to see who wins. Tommy had been fairly secretive about it, meaning no one knew what was going on and everyone's a little bit nervous.
When the Uber dropped the two boys off in the empty field, they were met with four smiling faces. “Hey boys! We’re just waiting for Big Russ to arrive. How’ve you been?” Tommy asked, clearly excited for the video he’d planned today
“Good, neither of us are sick anymore which is great! I’ve missed the outside.”
“By the way Tubbo, how did you guys even get sick? It’s not the regular flu season this time of year.” Wilbur questioned.
“Oh, that’s a funny story actually! You see-”
“Ranboo gave Tubso mono.” Tommy replied simply, cutting Ranboo’s explanation off. Tommy laughed loudly as his two friends grew red, not expecting everyone to know so soon.
Wilbur offers a simple “Yeah, I can’t say I’m surprised” while George just nods his head in agreement.
Jack on the other hand was not expecting that response, offering an “I’m sorry, what?” as a response.
Tubbo and Ranboo just laugh at their friend’s confusion as a car pulls into the field.
“Alright lads, that means it’s filming time! Let’s head out to the obstacles!” Tommy cried excitedly directing the group in the general direction they were walking to.
While they were walking, Tubbo was interrupted from his own thoughts by Wilbur appearing next to him. He whispers a “Welcome to the club” under his breath, and gestures at his and Ranboo’s interlocked hands when Tubbo meets him with a confused expression. Wilbur then nods towards his and George’s hands, where you could clearly see their pinkies linked. Tubbo smiled warmly up at Wilbur, mouthing a silent thank you .
“This is a nice place to eat! I’m starving after all of that running around.” Wilbur spoke as he took his seat, the group collectively agreeing to get dinner together after exerting themselves for today’s vlog.
“Yeah, I’m glad we were able to reschedule filming, it was a lot of fun!” Ranboo replied from across the table, a dopey grin plastered on his face.
Tommy eyed him mischievously before replying. “Well if you didn’t get Tubbo sick we wouldn’t have needed to reschedule, it’s all your fault Ranboo!” He sighed loudly and flung himself back in his chair after speaking.
“That literally makes no sense Tommy, I had the disease before even coming to the UK, It just takes time for the symptoms to develop. Even if I didn’t give it to Tubbo, I’d still be sick.”
“Ok? Then I could just film with Tubbo and we wouldn’t need you!” Tommy huffs, confident he’s won the argument.
“Tommy. This entire video is about teams, who would he be on a team with?” Ranboo replied snarkily. “Also, I doubt Tubbo would leave me to be sick alone, He’s too nice!”
Before Tommy has the chance to retort, Wilbur cuts him off abruptly. “Ladies, you’re both beautiful. I’m glad we were able to reschedule as well, but I’m still not sharing my drinks with you. I don’t need to be getting sick any time soon!”
As the words left Wilbur’s mouth, the two boys immediately shot out of their seats to lunge for their friends’ drinks. The table was overtaken by shrieking and laughing while the two unsuccessfully tried to steal a sip from their friends.
“Nice try, but I think doing nothing but being gay in a house alone for two weeks has messed with your reflexes.” Wilbur replies smugly, taking a sip from his drink.
Both Ranboo and Tubbo’s faces turn a nice shade of crimson, while the rest of the table laughs. As nice as it is to spend all of your time with your boyfriend, hanging out with your friends can be just as wonderful.
