Work Text:
Kanon just wanted to buy some new drumsticks since she accidentally broke hers. She really, really believed that she could make it back home on her own. She knew she should've asked someone, anyone, to come along with her. But, she didn't. And now she didn't know where she was.
"M-Maybe I shouldn't have taken that right..What if it was a left instead..? But I also could've gone forward...Fueee….." She whispered to herself.
Looking around, no one was around to help. Where on Earth did she lead herself to?
Shielding her eyes with one of her arms, she took a glance at the sky. That's when she noticed how dangerously close the sun was to setting.
Panic. Pure panic fluttered in her chest, fogging her mind. How did she manage to be out that long? She couldn't be out here during nighttime! Who knows what could happen?
Her first instinct was to run. Run and just pray that she found something that gave even the slightest bit of familiarity. She knew that was a stupid idea though. Too stupid.
She quickly took out her phone, trying her best to go into her contacts list despite the constant shaking of her fingers. How many people would be willing to help her at this time?
Panic only increased as she scrolled further and further down the list, not really knowing who to call. Her vision became a blur as tears threatened to fall.
Through the blurry vision though, she saw one name. Someone she knew would be able to rescue her at any given moment. Kaoru.
She didn't waste any time as she hit the 'call' button, shaking as she waited for the girl to pick up.
-
Kaoru was practicing her lines for an upcoming play in her room, sighing and shaking her head every time she did something that she believed she could improve.
"Maybe I should ask someone to help me with this role." She looked down at the script in her hands. Never minded a bit of help with practice.
She nearly dropped it when she heard her phone ringing loudly, indicating someone was calling.
"Oh my, whoever could it be? Maybe one of my lovely kittens? Kokoro perhaps? Maybe Misaki? Or Himari?" She talked to herself as she walked over to her phone that was sitting on a nearby nightstand.
Her eyes widened slightly when she saw that it wasn't from either of them. It was from Kanon.
She instantly picked up the phone with one hand, her script in the other, and answered the call.
"My beautiful Kanon, such a surprise. It is rare that you are the one who calls me. Especially at this hour. Why so ever do I receive the honor...?" Her voice trailed off as she heard something from the other side of the call. Sniffling..?
"K-Kaoru-san...I k-know it's getting late b-but…I've lost my way—again….Can you help me..?"
"Of course, Kanon. Stay calm. Please do describe your location to me." Kaoru glanced out the window. The sun had set by now. Kanon was left in the dark, she had to find her!
As the girl began describing her location, she threw the script on the bed in a hurry, and ran to the front door, taking a random jacket of hers from the coat rack as she did.
She held her phone up with her shoulder, running through the streets as fast as she could while using Kanon's descriptions as her guide. It wasn't long before she saw that familiar blue hair.
Kanon was sitting on the sidewalk, her knees up close to her chest and her arms resting on top of them. Her phone laid on top of her arms as well.
But all Kaoru could notice was the tears streaming down her face.
"Kanon!" She shouted, hanging up the call and shoving her phone in her coat pocket.
"K-Kaoru-san..!" She raised her arms up as Kaoru came running over, who quickly got on her knees and pulled Kanon into a hug. They barely even noticed how Kanon's phone fell to the side, thankfully landing on her bag and not the concrete.
"Are you okay, my love? You are not harmed, are you?" She pulled back and put her hands on Kanon's face, wiping away the tears.
"I-I'm okay...I-I'm so sorry.."
"What is there to apologize for? You've done absolutely nothing wrong, my kitten."
"I-I should've brought someone with me...B-But I didn't...A-And you had to come find me..I wasted your time.."
Kaoru sighed, giving her a smile. She moved some of Kanon's hair away so she could see slightly better. "You did not waste my time, princess. You were a damsel in distress. I am willing to drop anything in order to be by your side and rescue you."
"T-Thank you.." She whispered out.
After Kanon's tears had stopped and her sniffling died down, Kaoru stood up and held her hand out. "Shall we depart? You can stay at my home if you wish."
"I-I'd like that..I-Id like that a lot.." She took Kaoru's hand, using it to lift herself up.
Kaoru then took Kanon's bag and phone for her and the two began to walk back. At some point, Kanon felt a jacket wrap around her. Kaoru's. She just gripped onto it and sniffed it lightly, comforted by the smell of the very same person standing by her side.
-
Kanon sat on Kaoru's bed, fiddling with her fingers. All she could look at was the script that was thrown on the bed. She knew that Kaoru wouldn't really throw anything like that with such carelessness. But she did it for her.
She couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. Kaoru was clearly practicing her lines, was clearly busy, and was clearly doing something far more important. But she stopped her. She stopped her from doing it just because she didn't ask someone to go to the store with her.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the bedroom door opening.
"Sorry for the wait, my love. I have brought some tea. I hope it is to your liking." Kaoru walked over, holding two mugs. She sat beside her and held out a mug for her.
"I-Its okay! I-It's so nice of you to make some anyway.." She took the mug that she held out. She took a small sip. Comforting, she thought. Kaoru always knew how to make her feel better.
The two were silent for a moment, before Kaoru decided to speak up once more. "Are you okay? You've been quiet."
"A-Ah...I'm fine.."
"You know you can talk to me, right?"
Kanon looked up at her. It was weird when Kaoru didn't really speak in the way she usually did. It was rare, and slightly off-putting, but she knew that she was the only person Kaoru would let her act down around.
"I-I know...I-I...Just feel bad..Guilty, I suppose.." She looked back down, looking at her faint reflection in the tea. She could only sigh.
"You don't need to feel bad though, my love. Like I said, I am always willing to drop anything to rescue you. I always will be." Kaoru held her mug with one hand and put her free one on Kanon's shoulder.
"I-I know but...I get lost no matter what..Only place I can find are cafe's, but besides that, I'm hopeless...It has to get annoying to find me every time..."
She was surprised when that hand left her shoulder, and the sound of a mug being set down on a nearby table made her look up. Though she looked down again when we saw Kaoru kneel down in front of her, making her look at her.
"Kanon, my love. It will never, ever get annoying. I am willing to do anything if it means I get to be the one by your side. To be the one who makes you smile. I love you, even if you get lost. It just means I can rescue you." She took one of Kanon's hands with both of hers, giving a kiss to the back of it. Then she looked up at her with a smile. Not one of her overly dramatic smirks or the one she usually gave, but a genuine, soft smile. A reassuring one. A loving one.
"I-I…" Kanon felt her face heat up. She quickly set her mug on the nightstand alongside Kaoru's. "I-I love you too...Thank you for dealing with me...You make me so happy.."
She felt tears begin to form in her eyes. But she used her free hand to move Kaoru's hair away from her face and gave a kiss to her forehead. "So much…I-I love you so much.."
Kaoru couldn't help but give a chuckle. She stood up and let go of her hand. She then used her hands to wipe away the tears that were now threatening to spill from Kanon's eyes.
"Never forget it, okay? You too bring a warmth to my heart, making it flutter as if it were a dove. Quite fleeting, if I do say so myself. I love you with all my heart. I will always 'deal' with you. For I love you."
"A-And the voice is back," Kanon laughed. "B-But I won't forget it..I promise. I promise." She couldn't help but repeat it in a softer tone.
She's glad to have Kaoru in her life. And she knew Kaoru felt the same about her. They completed each other. They helped each other when they were down, when they were insecure, when they just needed someone to tell them 'I love you'. They were there for each other. As Kaoru would say, fate decided they were destined for each other. And Kanon couldn't help but agree.
