Chapter Text
You faked another laugh as the guy across from you made another rude joke. You met him at a conference for the park, he showed interest in your work with the Triceratops. He was funny at first and when he asked you on a date you thought ‘what the hell?’, but now that you had actually talked with him you realized he didn’t care about them at all. He was only acting interested to get you to go out with him, or to get into your pants.
“So why Triceratops?” he asked abruptly.
Surprised he asked you anything about you at all you hesitated “What?”
“Why Triceratops? I mean, aren’t there more interesting dinosaurs?” he said chuckling to himself.
“All dinosaurs are interesting, it’s just that I find them the most interesting. It’s a personal preference really” you said bluntly.
Sensing your hostility towards your questions he cleared his throat awkwardly “Right. Umm, how long did you say you’ve been working here?”
“About two months” you said taking a sip of your drink.
Nodding his head he smiled at you “I would go for the raptors, like that guy at the park, what’s his name? Aiden?”
“Owen” you corrected
“Yeah, you know him well?” he asked, his voice hiding something
“A little…why?”
You had met Owen as soon as you came to the Island. He showed you around, took you under his wing. And he appreciated your work with the triceratops. You became close friends. Not to mention, you kind of had a crush on him.
“Oh, nothing…well, I just-” leaning forward he continued quietly “I just met him briefly but he seems like kind of a douche-bag” he said bluntly.
Chuckling lightly, though not actually amused you nodded your head “Yeah, he tend to give that impression. But generally only to people he doesn’t like.”
He raised his eyebrow “What could I have done to make him not like me?” he said offended
“Well, for one you insulted his techniques because you thought you could do better. But he probably wouldn’t like you much anyway, since you did just call him a douche-bag.” you said monotone.
Owen didn’t say that he disliked this guy, but when they were talking you could see it in his stance, and the way he was ignoring what he was saying. You even thought he might punch him for a minute. But that is exactly why you didn’t tell him your date tonight was with him.
Staring at you for a moment he smiled hesitantly “You know him much more than you implied don’t you?”
You returned the smile “Yes. I was actually planning on going to see him when this date is over” you said, no longer caring if you offended him.
“I have a feeling that’s now right?” he asked realizing he screwed up.
“I’m gonna say yes.”

As you parked your car in front of Owens bungalow you saw him outside with his bike. Owen turned when he heard your car approaching. Ignoring the pounding of his heart he continued to work on his bike.
Turning briefly as you got out he yelled out to you, his eyes scanned over your body, you were still wearing your date outfit “Hey!”
“Hi” you said walking up to him “I’m a bit early, hope that’s okay.”
“It’s fine! But it does make me wonder why you are early…date didn’t go well?” he asked feigning disappointment.
In all honesty, he had hoped your date didn’t go well. He had been trying to convince himself to ask you out, but when you told him you had a date. His confidence diminished. Even though he was excited at the prospect of your date going bad, he didn’t want you to be sad.
“Nah, he was a dick. Plus not only did he insult me, but he also insulted you, and my Triceratops. Now that. That was crossing the line” you said sitting on the stairs behind him.
Smiling to himself he turned is body to look at you “He insulted your babies? You should have hit him”
Smiling you shook your head “No, the insult wasn’t that blunt, he was trying to hide it under feigned interest in me. But I could see through him.”
He turned back to his bike chuckling “Yeah, you can see through a lot of people. It’s one of the things I like about you, you called me out on my shit all the time when we first met” he said smiling fondly at the memories “How did he insult me? He didn’t insult my raptors did he?” he ended his question looking back at you expectantly.
“No, he just called you a douche-bag” you said playing with your nails.
“Ah, yeah that’s not surprising” after a moment he realized something “Wait, he knew me? How does he know me, who was this guy?” he asked turning back towards you.
Looking up at him you sighed “You know that government guy that came with Claire to ‘check up’ on the systems?”
“Oh, come on, that guy? You went on a date with him?” he asked exasperated as he stood up, turning towards you.
“What?! Like you’ve done better?”
“Hey! Don’t you start with me” he said playfully.
Smiling and shaking your head you leaned back against the steps, glancing up at the sky “But hey, things could be worse, right?“
Walking over and sitting down next to you he looked at you. Your closed eyes pointed towards the dimming sky.
“What could be worse than going on a date with greasy hair and too tight suits guy?” he asked scoffing
“I could have gone on a date with you” you said not being able to stop the smile that made it’s way onto your face.
“Hey!” he said offended looking over at you. Opening your eyes and looking over at him you started laughing at his genuine offence. After you laughed he started to chuckle as well “Ass.”
You giggled again “Only kidding.”
“Uh-huh, we both know I would make a better date than that douche” he said taking a sip from his beer.
“What makes you so confident about that? You don’t even know what we did” you said looking over at him.
“Let me guess, fancy restaurant, I’m guessing because of the outfit. And wine that sounded expensive but probably wasn’t?”
Smiling you shook your head "Extremely fancy restaurant, I felt out of place even in this” you said referring to your clothes “And, he ordered the most expensive wine on the menu, he made sure I knew that. So apart from the bad company, it was pretty good” you said watching Owen.
Chuckling he shook his head “Yeah, I could definitely do better” he said with a confident grin.
“Oh really? What exactly would a date with Owen Grady entail? Drinks at a sleazy bar, board shorts and food you brought from home” you asked watching him closely.
“Ha ha.. You know what? How ‘bout I show you?” he said turning to you.
“Show me? Owen Grady are you asking me on a date?” you asked quietly while smiling at him.
“Yeah I am. How about tomorrow night. And I will show you, no, prove to you, that I can take you on a better date than you would expect? Hell, it’ll be the best date you’ve ever been on” he said, his confidence overflowing at the prospect of finally going on a date with you.
After a moment you smiled “Deal”
Smiling at you he reached down and pulled out your favorite drink from a cooler next to the stairs and handing it to you “Good. Tomorrow night then” he said raising his beer for you to cheers.
Smiling and clinking your drinks together you two watched the sunset as you drank in silence. Both of your hearts pounding and minds racing at the idea of going on a date with each other. Something you two had secretly wanted to do since the day you first met.
