photographed earthly faces (5 + 1)

Summary:

the five times that hinata and kageyama reunited and the one time they didn't have to

he’d never admit it, fucking never, but it’s been an entire year of static voices and pixilated faces, kageyama only being able to catch hinata in his early mornings as he desperately tries to stay awake with sleep calling at his sore muscles; now the small things : hinata never looking at his damn phone, hinata’s bedhead, the messy eating, feisty attitude, his stupid height and never being able to reach the high shelves of the grocery store - god he missed it all. he missed him.

Notes:

Chapter 1: airport mornings

Chapter Text

Please don’t be late, Please don’t be late

Like a mantra, it plays in Kageyama’s head. Of course the day of plane delays is the day he comes home. Brazil was a whole day behind, leaving at 2 exactly in the afternoon the day before his time, Hinata is scheduled to arrive in the Tokyo airport at 10 am sharp. Hinata never checked his damn phone, so it would be pointless to even ask if his plane was delayed in the first place but here Kageyama stands, rocking frantic on his heels. He’d never admit it, fucking never , but it’s been an entire year of static voices and pixilated faces, Kageyama only being able to catch hinata in his early mornings as he desperately tries to stay awake with sleep calling at his sore muscles; now the small things : Hinata never looking at his damn phone, Hinata’s bedhead, the messy eating, feisty attitude, his stupid height and never being able to reach the high shelves of the grocery store - god he missed it all. He missed him. Never being caught dead saying it, but the long distance is tearing Kageyama's apart at the seams. He hadn’t meant to confess when he did, hadn’t ever planned to , with just under a year until Hinata was to leave the country to join the beach volleyball team, Kageyama had said ‘I love you’ and now they both were stuck in something too amazing and yet utterly killing. Long distance relationships. He had heard Noya talking about it between himself and Asashi, at the time he had neutral thoughts on it, but now, oh he fucking thought about it now.

10:21. Hinata was officially 20 minutes late and why ? They only had two weeks before Hinata was on a plane back to Brazil for off season practice which meant back to junk facetimes and poor connections. Why did the world hate him enough to make Kageyama wait like this? Looking down at his phone to check the time again, there’s an arrange of texts across the screen that he continues to ignore. Some from his teammates, some from his friends, one being Suga literally threatening him if he doesn’t hug hinata as hard as possible for him, but none from the person in question. No news, no updates, no new people, just the same staff and bustle of a crowded airport waiting to get to their different destinations as there was at 8 that morning. So he was two hours early, don’t mention it. With his eyes to his phone, his ears pick it up first.

The fast running of rubber sneakers on tile, a run that he’ll have recognized to his deathbed, the run that flew his fears away when it came quickly up behind him on the court, that flew to the only missing piece, the sound of contact on a ball with a eager hand smacking it to the other side; instead he hears a high pitched voice that haunts his dreams, but that meant

“Kageyamaaa!!!” Hinata sprinting across the airport towards him, arms opened wide with a smile even wider that matched the sun glowing behind him, his suitcase left abandoned on the floor and duffle bag bumping against his side.

Hinata Hinata Hinata

Embarrassingly, he almost doesn’t catch him. After a year of distance and phone calls, just in a tangle of limbs and only what could be a spiker’s jump, suddenly Hinata is finally in his arms again. Crying, but in his arms.

“I’m going to drop you idiot.” He says, but on the outside he’s squeezing Hinata hard enough to break every bone in his body, afraid he’s going to disappear at a moments notice. Months of sun kissed skin warm against his own, stuffing his face into fluffy red hair, feeling Hinata’s freshly new undercut prick at his fingers; something chews uncontrollably in his chest at the feeling but telling himself he’ll deal with that later. Right now Hinata’s within his grasp and sobbing loud into the collar of his shirt.

“You’re soaking me Hinata.” Kageyama complains, but in his voice, it’s easy to hear the tightness and the need when saying Hinata’s name.

“You are too, stupid.” Even with his dewy face, Hinata sounds unbearably happy. Finally home, Hinata’s finally home. For now at least and that’s enough for the both of them. Enough for them to somehow detangle in the middle of the airport, look frantic for Hinata’s forgotten luggage, and drive to Kageyama's admittedly not picked up apartment. Hinata doesn’t even give Kageyama the time to be embarrassed about the mess of unwashed dishes and strewed workout clothes, only ending back into his arms, causing them to be a cluster on the floor and Kageyama yelling his name, but Hinata’s happiness is too blinding for Kageyama to stay upset for long. Whilst it’s the first night of what was only a short few weeks, it’s the first night of what’s to be a journey neither of them knew were entirely prepared for, but more than happy to wait for every goodbye that held another hello in its grasp.
