“how many times are you gonna miss?” kenma deadpanned, not looking up from his game. kuroo playfully glared at him, holding the basketball to his hip.
“why are you so rude to me, i’ve only missed seven shots.” kenma smiled softly, but kuroo noticed that it didn’t reach his eyes.
“you’ve only shot eight.” it was the break before both college and third year started for the both of them, and kuroo wanted to spend as much time with kenma as he possibly could. he didn’t know why, but the thought of being apart from kenma was much more nerve racking than anything. he’d never say it out loud though.
he shot a few more shots before pausing, thinking for a moment.
“come play one on one with me.” kenma grumbled, but to kuroo’s surprise didn’t decline. he shoved his phone into his bag and they started to play.
as the clock ticked on; a quiet, uncomfortable silence started to suffocate them.
“i don’t want to play anymore.” kenma abruptly said, dropping the ball onto the floor. kuroo was taken aback, worry starting to seep into him.
“kenma? are you okay?” he didn’t answer, and instead looked down at his feet, his fists starting to clench and shake slightly. kuroo rushed over to him, gripping his shoulders.
“what’s wrong? kenma talk to me.”
“you’re leaving me.” kenma finally said, his voice thick with emotion. kuroo’s heart dropped.
“the one person who understands me more than i understand myself is leaving.” he shook kuroo’s hands off him, swiping at the tears filling his eyes.
“kenma…” kuroo trailed, trying to find the right words to say. but then he shook his head, pulling kenma in for a hug.
“i’m terrified you’re going to forget about me.” kenma mumbled into kuroo’s shoulder, his fingers curling into his shirt. kuroo rubbed his back gently.
“kenma, you’ve been my point of focus for the past almost ten years. there’s no fucking way i could ever forget you. all the memories we’ve created, they’re tattooed on my mind. and i know, it’ll be a little scary on your own. but i have faith you’ll get through it and before you know it, we’ll be in the same school again. we can even get an apartment together if you’d like.” kenma nodded, couldn’t help but smiling as he pulled himself a little away so their foreheads were gently touching.
his pointer finger softly touched kuroo’s chin, the sun streaming in from the windows of the gym. kuroo grinned, rubbing kenma’s cheek with the side his finger.
“i really hope you realized that i just kinda confessed my love for you and have been madly in love with you for the past seven years.” kenma laughed for real this time, a sound that kuroo was sure would play at the gates of heaven.
“yeah, i figured.”
