When Luz finally regained her sense of awareness, she found herself on a bed, head shoved into a pillow, and beet red. She lifted her head up and saw her room before her, somewhat to her surprise. The world had been an incomprehensible blur since Amity’s lips had touched her cheek, and she had fallen to the floor in the yard of Blight Manor, completely in a daze. How long had she sat there? Minutes? Hours? Had the Blights just let her sit there for who knows how long? Had Amity seen?
Right. Amity. The thought of her made everything that had happened that night finally register completely with Luz. She kissed me. She really, actually kissed me. Does she like me, like, THAT? This wasn’t Luz’s first rodeo with crushes. She had liked a few people in the human world, but it always went disastrously wrong. Luz was the weird kid, through and through. Nobody liked her, and especially nobody would want to date her. Anytime she had confessed her feelings, it met with a pity-filled rejection at best, and a cavalcade of laughter at worst. Eventually, she had had enough, and decided to try and quit crushing altogether, shoving any romantic feelings she had deep down inside of her. It had worked, until she befriended Amity.
Since the two of them ventured into Willow’s mind to save her memories, and had became friends, Luz felt a spark. She was always an affectionate person, but something about Amity made Luz feel so happy. She wanted to pull her into a hug at any opportunity, hold her hand, and just be around her. She assumed the blush on Amity's face whenever she did these things was because, like her, Amity didn’t get a ton of affection. Amity wouldn’t ever like the human. She had hated her just weeks previous. So, Luz had buried her strange, confused feelings. As usual.
But as time passed, Luz noticed strangeness in Amity’s behavior around her that even she couldn’t ignore. Since their dance at Grom, the blushing had grown even more frequent, and Amity would surprise her with frequent gifts, including “spare flowers from the manor gardens” when Luz had still not returned to Hexside, and the incredibly disgusting yet sweet fairy pie when she eventually did go back to school. But Luz still continued to deny, deny, deny the idea that Amity could like her. Besides, there was someone else Amity liked, the mysterious person who she wanted to ask to Grom. And that couldn’t have been her, otherwise Amity would have just asked her. Right? Right?
Luz had kept attempting to stuff her feelings deep down inside of her and never acknowledge them. Pretend they didn’t exist. She was just confusing romantic and platonic love, obviously. But when Amity had dropped down from the rafters at the Blight Industries event and put everything on the line to save Luz from that abomination, she could not lie to herself any longer. A bright red spread across her face and she let nothing but a simple “uhuh” out she realized that she was completely in love with Amity Blight.
What do I do, what should I say? Do I text her? Luz’s finger hovered over Amity’s contact on her phone, having done some tinkering with it along with Eda’s magic so it could contact scrolls. But her squirming stomach and burning face convinced her to not talk to Amity and call Willow instead.
Willow answered rather quickly. “Hey Luz, what’s going on? It’s a bit late to be calling.” She sounded tired.
“Heeeeeyyy Willow, good to talk to you! How’s the, uh, the ol’ arm holding up?” She fumbled over her words, uneager to get to the point of her calling.
Willow was not easily fooled. “Luz, c’mon. Nobody calls at 1AM for a simple catch-up. Are you ok? Is Eda’s curse acting up again?”
“I don’t suppose a kiss on the cheek is a normal witch way of saying goodbye, no?”
“Uhh, no? Why would tha- Oh my Titan she kissed you didn’t she” Willow’s perceptiveness continued to amaze Luz.
“ shekissedmerightonthecheekafterigotherlibraryjobbackandidontknowwhattodowhatdidshemeanbyit?” Luz squealed, dumping the weight of her situation in one breath.
“Luz, breathe. If she kissed you, that means she likes you. Can’t get much more simple than that.”
“Yes, but what if it was just some spur of the moment thing? Or just a friendly, platonic way to thank me for getting her job back?”
“Yes, Luz, she kissed you suuuper platonically. Only besties do that.”
“Ok ok, you’re probably right, but what do I do now? Does she want, like, a relationship?” The mere thought of an actual relationship with her made Luz’s legs squirm.
“Hmm, you do like her aswell, right?” Willow wasn’t quite sure why she asked that, considering she already knew the answer.
“Uhm, yeah...”
“Well then, don’t worry about it! You two can take your time and if you wanna ask her about a relationship, go for it, y’know? I don’t think you’d have to worry about Mittens rejecting you...” Willow didn’t want the two of them to rush things, but the cards were very obviously on the table. They both had it baaaaad.
“Thanks Willow, I still don’t know what I'm gonna do, but I do feel a bit better.”
“Anytime Luz, catch you later!” Willow said as they both hung up. Luz lay back down on her bed and hugged one of her pillows tight. Talking with Willow had definitely calmed her down, but she still was at a loss as to where to take things. How would Amity react if she tried to kiss her? The last thing Luz wanted was to make the first person to ever be romantically interested in her uncomfortable. What she needed was to talk to someone with experience in the field.

“EDAAA!” Luz yelled as she barreled down the stairs of The Owl House. Eda immediately sprang to, the loud nature of her apprentice being impossible to avoid. “Huh, what, what is it?” the older witch exclaimed.
“Eda, I need your advice on something.”
“Luz, I don’t have my magic anymore, and you’re way better at glyphs th-”
“No, it’s not magical. It’s like, uhh, personal.”
Eda was somewhat surprised. She didn’t have much to offer in terms of Luz’s teen drama. “What do you mean, kiddo?”
“Well... you’ve been in relationships before, right?”
Eda snorted. “Yeah, but I don’t think I’m the person to come to for romantic advice. You saw what happened with the Warden. Why you asking anyway, you found yourself a squeeze?”
“Um, Amity kissed me today and I like her aswell, but I don’t know what to do.” She froze. She had just revealed to Eda that she liked girls. Coming out was something she hadn’t even considered until now. Are people homophobic on the Boiling Isles? Is she gonna kick me out? She quickly looked down at the floor. “I’m bi, Eda.”
Eda stared at her with a blank expression of confusion. “Huh? What’s a bi?”
Luz’s heart was pounding. “It means I like more than one gender. Like, like that.
Eda’s confusion grew. “Kiddo, you know that’s pretty normal, right? There’s tons of people here like that. Hey, I’m one of them. You don’t need to act all ashamed by it.”
Luz’s eyes sparkled. “Do people not have to come out here? You’re bi aswell?!”
“What, is telling people who you like some big thing in the human realm?”
Luz sighed. “In the human realm, most people only like the opposite gender. And sometimes, people who don’t conform to that, the ‘right way’ of loving, get treated badly. Some of us have to hide who we love, just so even our families don’t turn on us. Luckily, my mom was always supportive of who I was, but other kids weren’t so lucky. It’s scary out there.”
Eda was shocked. How could the human realm be so monstrous? She quickly pulled Luz into a hug. “Oh, Luz, I’m so sorry. You’re valid and amazing and special and anyone who tells you otherwise deserves to be glyphed into oblivion. I’ll make sure of it.”
Tears were pouring fast and thick from Luz’s eyes as she held Eda’s embrace. She could feel how much the witch cared for her, and she felt so loved that it hurt. “I love you so much Eda.”
It was Eda’s turn to tear up now. “I love you too, kiddo.” They silently held the hug for a minute, then broke apart and wiped their eyes. “Now, you said you needed help with your little crush?”
Luz composed herself. “Yeah. So she kissed me, which probably means she likes me, but what does she want from me? Do I kiss her back? Do I ask her if she wants to date? I don’t want to make things awkward with her.”
“I haven’t felt that kinda spark, that one that makes you blush and trip over your own words, for a long while. You’ve seen evidence enough of that. But I can see it in you two.” she paused for a moment. “But there is a catch.”
“What is it?” Luz asked worriedly.
She snorted. “Even if you start a relationship with her, it’s always gonna be awkward at the start. It’s always gonna be imperfect. You guys are gonna be blushing messes for a little while and you just have to accept that. But, y’know, when you’re over those awkward first phases, you’ll realise how important they were. Those imperfections are beautiful. No good relationship started without them.”
“So, what are you saying?”
“I’m saying go for it! March over to her and let her know that she’s worthy of your almighty affection. Ask ‘er if she wants a relationship. Is she says yes, then you got a whole new world of happiness opened before you, kiddo. And if she says no,” She nudged Luz playfully in the ribs. “well, there’s always a new badge waiting for you at the Bad Girl Coven.”
Luz pulled Eda into yet another hug. “Thanks Eda.” She had never been more grateful that when she was brought to this realm without her mom, she had found another.
“Of course kiddo, just try to keep all your mushy stuff away from King, ok? He’ll try to use you as leverage to recruit Amity into his army.” She and Luz snickered. “Now I’d say it’s time we get to bed, huh?” She said with a yawn.
Luz stifled a yawn of her own. “Of course, mom.” She froze and a bright pink spread across her face, realizing she just called Eda mom. She rushed up the stairs, eager to pretend this never happened. “OKGOODNIGHTEDAOWLLADYGOODBYEFOREVER!”
Eda sat down on the couch again, a little frozen. A small smile spread across her face. “Mom, huh?” For Luz’s sake she would pretend she hadn’t heard it, but The Owl Lady had never been happier. Mom. I could get used to that.
---
The next day, Luz entered Hexside tired, red, and her heart pounding like crazy. Part of her hoped she just wouldn’t run into Amity today, and save them both the embarrassment. These hopes didn’t last long as she saw Amity across the hall the second she came through the front door, surrounded by people asking about her new hair. You wouldn’t be able to tell that the young witch had spent the evening in a similar situation as Luz, yelling into her pillow and seeking advice from the teasing, yet uncharacteristically kind twins. The second she saw Luz though, she bolted as quickly as you can without running, leading Luz to follow her in a sort of speedwalk chase. Luz was fast, however, and quickly caught up to Amity. She loosely grabbed her arm before the witch could escape again.
Amity was already red as a beet. “Oh, Luz you’re here! I mean, obviously you’re here, this is sch-”
“Azura Book Club after school.” Luz said. She softly squeezed Amity’s hand, darkening both of their blushes. “Please?”
Amity sighed. “Okay. But Luz, I am so sorry, I know you do-”
She was cut off by Luz stroking her thumb with her own, the simple gesture telling a thousand emotional words. “You have nothing to be sorry for.” She let go of Amity’s hand and began to walk to her class. “Let’s talk later.”
Amity gulped, more confused and nervous than ever. “O-okay.” Gahhh! She’s so cute what does it all mean?
---
Amity immediately left for the library once her class was over, hoping to have some time to work out a game plan before Luz arrived. But, since nothing wanted to go her way today, Luz was already there waiting for her.
The butterflies in Amity’s stomach had reached maximum overdrive. There was no turning back now. “H-h-hi, Luz.”
Somewhat to her relief, Luz looked equally as terrified. “Hi, can w-we clarify ssome things?”
Amity’s heart sank. That sentence did not bode well. If she’s about to reject me I will never love again.
“Do you, uhm, l-like me, Amity?”
There was no point in lying now. Whatever fate Luz had decided to befall her was inevitable. “I, uhh, mm,” She sighed, closing her eyes and lowering her head. “Yes, I do Luz.” She braced for the rejection, the end of one of her only true friendships.
“I like you too, Amity. A lot.” She froze. Oh my Titan. No way. No way no way no way no way no way no way-
She didn’t have time to continue processing this before Luz hit her with another bombshell of a question. “Can I kiss you?” Luz didn’t have to wait long for a response, as Amity’s rapid stammering was accompanied by fierce nodding.
So, Luz stopped thinking, stopped worrying, and leant in for the kiss. And stopped. They were both frozen in place, inches away from each others’ lips, making their best kiss face. But neither of them had leant in far enough. They both opened their eyes and grew red, a smile breaking out on their faces. After a moment, they both leant in at the same time, and hit each others’ noses, sending them back. They couldn’t hold it in any longer, and so they both laughed. They laughed for what felt like hours, reveling in the sheer absurdity of the situation.
After they had finished giggling, Luz finally leant in again, taking Amity by surprise, and finally sealed the deal. She kissed her right on the lips. It was warm, it was soft, and it was the best thing Luz had ever experienced. Amity soon got over her shock and returned the favor, although neither of them knew exactly how to kiss properly. But that didn't matter. They never wanted to stop.
They quickly broke off the kiss and sat there for a moment, neither of them being able to look at the other, but wanting more all the same. “Was that an ok kiss?” Luz asked weakly, breaking the silence.
Amity giggled again. “Seriously? Luz, you just changed my life. It was much more than ok .
Luz smiled, relieved she hadn’t just ruined everything for the rest of all time. “Sooo, you wouldn’t mind doing it again sometime, no?”
Amity went for it. The big question. “I wouldn’t, if you wouldn’t mind being, like, a t-thing?”
Luz took her hand. “I’d love to be your girlfriend Amity. Although I gotta say, I think you really have gone soft on me, Blight.”
Amity rubbed Luz’s thumb, same as Luz had done to her earlier. “Oh really? In your dreams, Noceda.”
Luz smirked. “I think all my dreams just came true.”
They stared into each other's eyes for a moment before breaking into another fit of giggles. “That was so cheesy !” chuckled Amity. “I love it.”
They turned away from each other again, faces burning, but they kept holding hands. Neither of them ever wanted to let go.
Luz mustered up her courage and said it.
“And I love you, Amity.”
“I love you too, Luz.”
It wasn’t the perfect, hyper-romantic confession either of them expected. It wasn’t a gorgeous nighttime picnic by a lake, capped off with a beautiful song like Luz imagined. It wasn’t a flawless dance by the Grom tree like Amity had dreamed of. It was spontaneous, it was anxious, and it was imperfect.
But it was beautiful. And that’s good enough for them.
