Chapter Text
It was a cool night when the phone call came in. A phone call stating their childhood friends Natsusa and Ibuki were in a motorbike accident. A car had taken a turn too wide and ended up on the wrong side of the road. Natsusa was in critical condition, while Ibuki’s condition was minor in comparison. They had both been taken to Yamamoto Central hospital in the back of an ambulance.
Sei had called his younger sister, Emiko, after he had gotten there. He had wanted his sister, who’d always trailed along behind them growing up to be there when they got the news, whether good or bad, about Natsusa.
~~~~
Six months had passed since that life-changing night. Sei had become a second year at Doshisha University, while Natsusa had to repeat his first year after missing six months of school to go through rehabilitation.
The warm April air welcomed Emiko as she stepped out of the apartment. Her brother had lived on campus and had come out to the apartment complex to walk them both to school. Smiling brightly, as spotted the familiar orange-haired male exiting his building. Opening her mouth to say good morning only to be beaten by her brother.
“Natsu,” Sei’s monotone voice called out. Crimson orbs watching his friend, making sure everything was okay.
“Sei, Emiko. Good morning,” offering them both a small smile only to freeze as he struggled to pull his hand out of his pocket.
The siblings noticed his concern as he opened and closed his hand, trying to make a fist. Sei stepped closer, watching the actions with knowing eyes, “feeling numb?”
“Yeah, a little,” lifting his head with a small smile, “but I’m fine.”
The crimson eyed male didn’t question him any further as he held his hand open expectantly, “your stuff.”
Handing his bag over with a thankful smile, “thank you, Sei.” Bright green eyes then landed on the sibling, “Emiko! You excited for your first day?”
Nodding her head enthusiastically, “very!” Tilting her head to the side, “what about you? Are you ready for your first day back?”
Shrugging his shoulders with a nervous grin, “of course.”
Trailing along behind the duo as they walked to campus, the black-haired first year listened as her brother told Natsusa about the phone call he had had with his mother. Pouting as she remembered about the news of a particular idol group breaking up, Natsusa’s mother had spoken in length about how devastated she was about it.
“My part was so short!” the repeat first year jumped in.
Emiko covered her laugh with a fake cough as she continued to listen to the conversation. Her eyes zoning in on the beads of sweat forming around Natsusa’s face, “we can take a break if you need it?”
Sei’s orbs took notice as he slowed his pace, waiting for an answer.
Shaking his hands in front of him as he turned to look over his shoulder, “no. I’m fine.”
Pursing her lips, wondering if he was telling the truth, “you sure?”
Nodding his head with a soft smile before turning forward and continuing on, “I just haven’t walked a long distance in a while. Don’t worry.”
Scoffing at his reply as she adjusted her bag, “how could we not worry about you?”
They continued towards campus in silence as Natsusa’s thoughts swirled around what he would be doing this year that would make both the siblings worry about him. The brother and sister duo noticed their friend lost in thought and put it down to nerves about repeating.
Stepping through the gates, the dark-haired female piped up, “we have most of the same classes.”
Humming as they headed in the direction of their lecture hall, “it just means I can keep a close eye on you this year, so Sei doesn’t have to worry.”
“I'm not worried about her," brushing his comment off.
Scrunching her nose up, "I didn't think of that. But it also means I can keep a close eye on you."
Chuckling at her reaction before stepping into the large room, "true." Turning to face the second year as he was handed his bag, "see you later."
Emiko made her way down the staircase and into a row. Noticing her brother moving to follow them, she was going to say something only to be cut off by the orange-haired male.
"Go attend your own classes," casting his eyes back to his childhood friend. Dropping into the seat beside the ravenette, he closed his eyes, stating, "it'll be a problem if you get held back a year, too."
Sei let out a breath, "I'll come and get you after class. Wait for me."
Watching her brother as she pulled out her textbook, she knew he was apprehensive about Natsusa and how he would cope. It wasn't unusual for the stoic male to hover around, ensuring he was safe and comfortable.
"Thanks. I'll try to get used to things as quickly as I can," trying to ease the second-year's worries.
Nodding as he turned to leave, "it's alright. I don't mind."
Giving her brother a quick wave, "see you after class." Turning around to face the front, calmly pointing out, "you know he is just worried about you."
Dropping his eyes to the desk, "I know, you both are."
Resting her head on her hand as she leaned on the desk, "only cause it's you."
Giving her a cheeky smile only to be interrupted by someone running towards them calling out. "Natsu-senpai!" as loud as possible.
"I was so worried about you!" Saitou bowed at his senior and fellow first-year profusely dripping sweat over the desk, "is it okay you came back so quickly?"
Emiko scrunched her face in disgust, seeing the puddle form on the table. Turning away from the guy, not wanting to breathe in his body odour.
"Uh yeah. Looks like I'm going to be a first-year with you now. Please take care of me," the green-eyed male moved back slightly while trying not to show how uncomfortable he was.
The chubby male leaned in further, "yes! Ask me for anything! I'll support you the best I can!"
The sound of sweat hitting the table, she took a peek at how much he’d sweated in such a short time. Whispering out a quiet as a shiver of disgust ran up her spine, "gross."
"T-thanks." Pointing to the table with a strained smile, "why don't you wipe yourself up first?"
Standing up straight with an apologetic smile, "oh! Sorry!" Pulling out the towel he had tucked into his shorts and wiping the table down, "I ran all the way here!"
His body odour wafted up to the duo, making both their stomachs roll at the stench. Swallowing back her breakfast, Emiko noticed a familiar redhead drop himself into the seat in front of her.
"Oh Yasunari," her desk mate commented.
Emiko's eyes narrowed as he ignored her friend and began scrolling on his phone.
The bubbly male leaned forward, excited to see a familiar face, "long time no see! How have you been?"
Clicking her tongue at his one-word response, "what no hello?"
Turning his head to the side, noticing the familiar face, "hello."
Leaning back in her seat with her arms crossed. She watched as Natsusa tried to speak with him, not getting discouraged.
"Oh, that's right," picking up the conversation as if he hadn't been ignored. "Sei showed me the videos of the league's fixtures this year-"
"Are you trying to give me advice?" the blue eyes male rudely interrupted.
"No... that's not..." trying to recover after getting caught.
Lifting his head high and keeping his eyes forward, "I don't need any advice. Especially from you."
"Why can't you at least hear him out, Yasunari?" annoyance clear in her tone as the redhead stood up to move seats.
Not even looking back as he moved across the row, "the same goes for you."
Chewing the inside of her lip, she wanted to throw something at the male for the way he had spoken to Natsu.
"Did I do something?" the green-eyed male asked as he pouted. "He wasn't like that in high school, right?"
Clicking her tongue again as she crossed her arms over her chest, "he was but not to that extent."
He leaned forward and took a breath in only to spring back up as the smell of Saitou lingered on the desk. Crying out, "it stinks!"
Cackling at his outburst, not caring it was drawing attention.
Standing and stretching, Emiko was glad classes were finally over for the day. Shoving her stuff in her bag before turning and snatching Natsusa’s before he could carry it.
“Don't complain," shooting him a warning look as she pulled the bags onto one shoulder.
Raising his hands in defeat, knowing she wouldn't back down, "let's just go wait for Sei."
Nodding her head, she followed him to the exit, where they met up with Saitou, who was happy to wait with them before they headed to the training field. Trailing along behind the group, she was curious to see what the college rugby team was like in comparison to the high school team. The first-year had spent the majority of her time growing up either watching or playing the sport due to her brother and his friends. She had tried to join a team but quickly realised girls and boys had different comps, along with not being able to find enough girls to form a team.
Stepping through the side gate, she watched Natsu, curious how the green-eyed male felt about being back on the field. She had to admit if she were in his shoes, the ravenette wouldn't be able to watch the sport no matter how much she loved it.
"I'm so nervous," Natsu breathed out as his pace slowed.
Her brother stopped giving him a curious look, "what are you nervous for?"
Rolling her eyes at how dense her brother could be not to notice how skittish the orange-haired male was being. Narrowing her eyes, wondering what he had secretly planned when they weren't around.
Sweat dropping, "hmm, nothing..."
Saitou smiled brightly, "that's right! Let's hurry Natsusa-senpai! Everyone is waiting for you!"
Emiko's eyes widened as her childhood friend was suddenly lifted off the ground by a blonde who welcomed him back. Her heart squeezed as he was raised higher, stepping forward at the same time as her brother to put a stop to him.
"It's dangerous," her brother's chilling stare at Ethan Taylor while he held Natsusa hand.
"Put him down," Emiko captured the third year's wrist catching the guys attention. She waited for him to say something until another male called out.
The vice-captain, Ikuto, scrunched his brows in frustration at how dense his underclassman could be. "Taylor! Stop That!" Taking another step forward as his voice oozed authority, "it's Natsusa first day back at school."
The blonde lowered the first-year while turning him to apologise, "oh! Sorry!" Still holding him under the arms, "did you get shorter while you were in the hospital?"
Letting go of the tall guy's wrist and stepping back, this was the one thing she couldn't stand about the sport. It attracted some weird guys. Stepping back next to her brother, she watched as they continued to hover around her friend. She knew if it got out of hand, he would step in.
The brunette with dreadlocks poked at the small male's arms, "no. Ne probably lost a lot of muscle mass. That'll happen when you've been in bed for six months."
The guy with streaks of pink in his hair squatted down and groped his legs, "I think he was like this to begin with."
Emiko could only sweatdrop as they continued to poke and squish Natsu's arms and legs. Whispering to her brother, "and these are third years?"
"Has everyone's sense of delicacy been completely destroyed?" shaking his head as they continued on touching him.
The group lifted their heads as more people called out to returning player, all curious to see how he was doing. The ruby eyed female watched as everyone crowded around him, getting ready to step in and kick some ass if they manhandled the injured male.
A shiver rolled down her spine, feeling the presence of someone powerful. Turning slowly, she spotted a purple-haired male and wondered if he was the captain. Continuing to watch, she stayed by her brother, not wanting to get caught up in his hard stare.
"Hey," his voice, though not loud, was firm enough to make everyone stop in their tracks. "Hurry up and start stretching," resting a hand on his hip, waiting for them to reply.
A chorus of yes’s were called out as they said goodbye to their old teammate before getting ready for training. They all promised they would celebrate later for his return.
Sei handed his sister Natsusa's bag before nodding to the two of them, "I'll see you both later."
"See you later," watching as he turned to join his team. "Hey, do you want to stay and watch the practice?" Turning to leave, she stopped when the green-eyed male hadn't followed her, only to notice the built purple-haired male approached them.
"Captain, it's been a while," Natsu looked up to the male as he stood in front of him.
"Are you really sure?" questioning him about a decision he'd made.
Narrowing her eyes, wondering what her friend had agreed to do without her or her brother's knowledge.
"Huh? Can't I?" his lip dropped, making the black-haired female turn to him in surprise as he continued. "Am I too annoying, after all?" he appeared to be truly upset.
The tall male took a step back as his eyes widened, not knowing what to do, "huh?"
"I'm annoying. I get it. I got the feeling that's what you thought of me..." the words leaving his mouth even convincing Emiko, who knew how manipulative he could be.
"N-no," Gakuto stuttered out, not knowing how he got that idea.
"Natsusa. Don't cause your captain so much trouble," the light blue-haired vice-captain scolded from behind them.
Ruby eyes darted between the two tall guys wondering what was going on, staying silent to see how things were going to play out.
The captain smiled softly, "I just wanted to make sure. I will respect your wishes. I'll wait until after training at the meeting." Lifting his hand to ruffle his underclassman's hair only to stop and drop it to his shoulder and give it a quick pat.
The blue-eyed male stepped forward, still not noticing the other person standing with the recovered first year. "The league fixtures have already started, and we don't have enough people. It would be a big help."
Narrowing her eyes, working out that Natsusa and his love of rugby wanted to stay in the sport must have put his name to assist the team. Letting out a groan and catching the attention of the three males.
The captain and vice-captain finally noticed the person lingering around. "Can we help you? Are you looking to try out?" Ikuto ran his eyes over the baggy hoodie and jeans, not realising who the person was female
Natsusa snorted at the comment, "as if."
"If he wants to try out, he's more than welcome. But we already have a starting lineup," the captain piped up.
Stopping his laughter, he flung his arms around her, capturing the ruby eyed girl in his arms, "I would never let my precious Emiko do such a thing."
Both males froze at the statement, not realising that the person standing in front of them was a female and in some kind of relationship with the recovering first year.
Feeling her cheeks warm at the stares she was receiving, she gently pushing her childhood friend off her with a sigh, "get off me." Turning to the two fourth years, "sorry about but no, I'm not looking to join the team in any way."
The leaner male waved his arms in front of him, "sorry, we got the wrong idea."
Gakuto smiled as he watched the female struggle to push the orange-haired guy away, "I'm glad to see you happy, Natsusa. We'll see you after training then."
Red eyes turned, curious at what the captain had meant, "eh, what did he mean?"
Shrugging his shoulders, he grabbed her thin wrist and began pulling her towards the grandstands, "who knows?"
Letting herself be pulled along, she paused, making him stop. Chewing her bottom lip, "you're really going back to rugby, aren't you?"
A sigh escaped his lips, "couldn't hide it from you, Emi-chan."
Casting her eyes towards the field, searching out her brother, "he's going to be pissed."
"You think?" pursing his lips.
A soft chuckle escaped her soft pink lips, "oh, I know so." Pausing for a moment, "but if it's what you want to do to stay connected to the sport. I guess it's okay, but please be careful."
Reaching out and ruffling her black locks, "naww, thank you!"
Pushing his hand away, scoffing, "whatever, let's just grab a seat."
Chapter Text
Natsusa waited for all the club members to enter the clubhouse before making his way inside, leaving Emiko hanging around outside with nothing to do but wait.
Letting out a small groan, she leaned against the building just a bit away from the entrance and let herself slid down the wall, so she sitting on the floor. Pulling out her phone, she scrolled through different social media sites to pass the time. Becoming engrossed in a page she’d opened she didn't notice guys making their way out of the building until a presence loomed over her.
Lifting her head as a shadow covered her only to spotted the blonde guy who had raised Natsusa in the air earlier. Already not liking the blonde, her words were sharp and to the point, "can I help you?
"What are you doing here?" his eyes filled with curiosity.
Giving him a look of confusion, "waiting."
His head tilted as he scrunched his nose, "for who?"
"What does it matter to you?" biting back, not understanding what his problem was.
Tilting his head as he leaned forward, "you're waiting in front of the rugby clubhouse after all, so it must be one of us. Who is it?"
Not wanting to sit on the floor while the stranger stood above her. Standing up with her shoulders back only to realize she didn't go past his shoulders. Trying to step around him only to be closed in, "I'm leaving, so back off."
"Don't leave when I don't even know your name," his green eyes shone mischievously.
Grinding her teeth together, trying to weigh up her options of what to do. The small first year's mind thought of a few painful options but knew it probably wasn't the way to get out of the situation. Batting her eyes innocently, "move now, or I won't be held responsible for my actions."
"Taylor, what are you doing?" the voice of the vice-captain cut through the air.
The blond spun around with a charming smile, "nothing."
Turning her head and scoffing, "yeah, nothing, my ass."
"Oh, Emiko, what are you still doing here?" his eyes widened, realizing it was the small female the third-year had cornered. It then clicked who she was waiting for, "Natsusa and Sei left a few minutes ago."
Her mouth dropped, "what? They left without me!" Running a hand through her dark shoulder-length hair, making her hood fall back, exposing her soft facial features, "shit! Shit, I gotta go." Throwing her bag over her shoulder, "thank you, Ikuto-san."
The light blue-haired male narrowed his eyes at the third-year who was watching the black-haired beauty runoff, "she is off-limits."
"How do you know?" curious how the fourth-year knew about the small female
Resting a hand on his hip, "she with Natsusa."
Turning in shock to completely face him, "are you serious."
Nodding his head once, "very. Now let's go."
~~~
Jogging down the street, knowing they couldn't have got too far with Natsu. Rounding a corner, she let out a breath of relief, spotting orange and black hair up ahead. Sucking in a breath before shouting, "oi, wait for me!"
Both males stopped and turned before paling as they spotted crimson orbs glaring at them. "I didn't know she was going to wait for us," the green-eyed first year whispered to Sei.
Waiting for his sister to catch up before continuing on without a word.
"Didn't you notice me waiting for you both?" huffing out as she kept pace with them.
Letting out a nervous chuckle, "I didn't think to look."
Placing a hand across her chest, "I'm heartbroken! I walked you over and told you where I would be waiting."
"Sorry, Emi-chan, please forgive me," clapping his hand in front of himself and bowing his head slightly, asking for forgiveness.
Pouting her bottom lip before breaking into a smile, "only if you're paying for dinner."
Chapter Text
Sweatdropping at the usual request when he'd ask for her forgiveness. She hadn't changed at all in the years he'd known her, "alright..."
"Yes!" cheering at her victory. "Why is your cheek red?" leaning forward to get a better look at the bright red spot on his cheek.
Rubbing the spot where Sei had pinned his cheek, "your brother was pissed at me, but it's all good now."
"Was it because you became a manager?" already knowing the answer. Her brother was just concerned about him and didn't want anything bad to happen, especially if he had to carry heavy items around.
Scratching the side of his cheek, knowing the female could read him like a book, "yeah..."
Letting out a sigh as she adjusted her bag, "if you get stuck and can't move, I promise to help as much as I can."
Throwing his arms around her, "you do care about me!"
She rolled her crimson orbs while gently pushing him away, "lies... well maybe a little, but only cause you're like family."
Heading towards the university's cafeteria, the two happily chatted while Sei stayed silent, only nodding his head every once and a while to agree or disagree. Stepping into the line, they each ordered their meals before paying for them.
Holding her tray Emiko looked around the almost empty eating area, "so where are we sitting?"
"Natsu-senpai! Seiichirou-san!" the voice of Saitou calling to them across the room.
"I guess we're sitting with the rugby guys," trailing along behind the duo. Standing beside her brother at the end of the table, waiting for him to sit down first so as not to appear rude. Listening to Natsu rattle off the names and high school information about the two guys across from them. She could only snicker at how shocked they were that he'd taken the time to get to know them.
"Once I decided to become manager, I memorized the profile of all the members." The repeating first-year advised them all confidently before noticing the warning glare Sei was throwing at him. Panicking as he corrected himself, "so when did you both start playing rugby? I played against you both in high school a number of times."
Covering her laugh with a cough, she'd given up on waiting for her brother to take a seat. Placing her tray down before pulling out the chair and starting on her dinner before it got cold. Ignoring the conversation going on around her until it suddenly became quiet. Lifting her head noticing everyone was staring at her waiting for an answer.
Swallowing her food, "what?"
The blonde clicked his tongue, annoyed she hadn't been paying attention, "you're a first-year, right?"
Nodding her head, "yeah, and so are you three."
The greenette with the bowl cut nervously smiled, "what school did you come from?"
Before the crimson eyed female could reply, Natsu had replied, "same as Sei and me."
"Oh! So how long have you known each other?" curious about the three of them.
Tapping his chin in thought while Sei continued to eat quietly, "since preschool. So most of our lives."
"Yet it feels like so much longer some days," casually throwing the comment in to stir the pot before picking up her chopsticks to continue eating.
His eyes widen in surprise, "really?"
Smirking at the reaction, "only on the days where he." gesturing towards the orange-haired male, "wants to test my patience."
"What are you two a couple or something?" biting back, noticing at how at ease she was around the two guys.
It took a moment for her mind to register the comment before she scrunched her face in disgust, "ew! No, no, just no!"
Natsu shook his head while waving his hands, "it's not like that!"
Leaning forward skeptically, "then what is it then?"
"We're like family! He's like a brother," her face still scrunched in disgust, not liking the idea of people thinking they were a couple.
Sei finishes the food in his mouth before commenting, "She's my little sister. She's no allowed to date."
Chapter Text
Emiko enjoyed the crisp air as she followed her brother and Natsusa towards the field. It was going to be the green-eyed male’s first day as a manager, and she wanted to be there to support him. Even if it was just from the bleachers.
“Good luck today,” she wished her friend luck before parting ways with the boys.
Dropping herself into a seat waited for training to start. Her sharp crimson orbs kept track of what her childhood friend was doing while also spying on some of the guys in the team. Watching Yasunari run across while the blue-ette from her class tried to keep up. Chewing her bottom lip, she couldn’t help appreciate their fine form.
Her ears twitched as a brunette who was a senior manager called out, “Yuzuki-kun!”
The new manager quickly remembered he was now a manager and couldn’t stand around watching as his name was called out, “Oh! Yes!”
“Please bring some more ice!” Emiko watched the brunette manager call out while standing there with a hand on her hip.
Watching Natsusa runoff to get more ice, she knew he was going to overwork himself just to prove a point. Spotting him return with three coolers, she couldn’t help but scoff as the other manager hadn’t even offered him a hand. Her eyes narrow as she heard the same voice calling out again.
“Yuzuki-kun, the water bottles! You forgot to wash them!”
They were giving him all the odd jobs they didn’t want to do, she realized while spotting the females doing easy jobs that required less effort. Having enough of being seated, the ravenette made her way down to the field.
Grinding her teeth as the same high pitched voice could be heard around the side of the clubhouse. “Who washed the towels without shaking the sand out first? The laundry machine will break.”
Making her way around the field, she couldn’t believe how petty the brunette was being. She should be telling Natsusa what to do with clearer instructions, not just expecting him to know. After all, it was his first time as a manager. Rubbing the bridge of her nose, knowing it wasn’t her place to say anything since she wasn’t part of the team, but she had the burning need to stand up for the recovering first year.
Halting in her place around the side of the change rooms, hearing the voices of two players
“Natsusa-san made it right?” the first male questioned
He let out a sigh as he ran a hand through his spiky hair, “it really breaks my concentration when the sports drinks taste bad.”
Rolling her eyes at the player, knowing if it only took something so simple to break his concentration, then he wouldn’t be making it too far in this sport.
“Is he really planning on becoming a manager?” the first guy leaned forward as he asked the question.
“Isn't that really awkward?" The spiky-haired player questioned as he leaned back, "a rookie who was in the limelight last year becoming a manager this year."
Emiko's reaction clenched her fist. She wanted to step out and point out how much Natsusa loved the sport if he was willing to return to it. She couldn't believe how small-minded these guys were being.
"It's probably the worst for Yasunari," watching the redhead running across the field. "I mean, he has his old position."
Chewing the inside of her cheek, making it bleed. She knew the redhead wasn't like that. He was probably struggling to take the place of such a valued teammate. Her thoughts were interrupted as they continued.
"I heard he can't be a player after that injury," gossiping as they continued to sit on the floor, not caring about who could hear them.
Lowering his voice, the first male replied, "I heard that Ibuki-san quit the club because of the accident, too."
A groan escaped the other guy's lips, "I joined because I admired Ibuki-san and now he's gone..."
Scoffing the spiky hair guy comment, "I know what you mean." Looking around to see if his seniors were listening, "and what makes it worse is that chick following him to practice."
"Honestly, I don't know why she even hangs around. She's not even a manager."
Grinding her teeth together, she turned on her heel knowing it was for the best, she didn't cause a scene by stepping out and putting them in their place. Though she wanted nothing more than to knock some sense into them and remind them that they should respect their seniors. The thought of getting into trouble and being told not to come back nagged in the back of her mind. She had to keep an eye on Natsusa while her brother trained.
Releasing a breath as she made her way back to her spot in the bleachers. Her crimson orbs locked with her brothers, offering him a small smile to show she was fine with watching them train.
~~~~
The clouds had begun to turn pink as the sun slowly set, signalling the boys to slowly start winding down. Sei was using Natsusa for his chest workout as the orange-haired male stood above him.
Watching the crimson eyed male sweat, "well... I wonder about that..."
"It'd be for the best," Sei replied without a second thought, "it'd be easier for me to pick you up."
"That's true, but I'm a manager now..." trying to protest the idea.
Noticing the duo debating something, Ikuto strolls up to them, "what are you talking about?"
Emiko had her bag thrown over her shoulder as she approached the three of them. Pushing a stray strand behind her ears, "yeah! What are you trying to avoid doing, Natsusa?"
Bright green orbs dart between Emiko and the vice-captain, "nothing at all!"
Pushing the smaller male back as he sits up, "can you let Natsusa live in the dorms with us?"
Starting at his childhood friend surprised he so boldly asked the question, "hey! Sei!"
"True. That would make it easier for you as a manager," the fourth year smiled, knowing it would be easier for everyone to keep an eye on him. Tilting his head, pointing out, "and you used to live in the dorms anyway. I'll discuss it with the coach and Gakuto."
Emiko could only stare as he walked away to discuss the option of Natsu living in the dorms. Turning to her brother and friend, "wait, that means I would be left behind in the apartment!"
Ignoring his sister, Sei just nodded his head, "please."
Stumbling backwards as the dark-haired male let go of his hand, "B-but!" Jumping up and turning to his quiet friend, exclaiming, "But there are people who won't like that."
Furrowing his brow in confusion, "there is no one like that."
"There is, you just don't notice Sei!" biting back at his oblivious friend before turning to Emiko for support.
Biting her bottom lip and turning away, not wanting to have to answer the question.
Before Natsusa could argue any further, one of the older female managers called out for help.
Chapter Text
After one of the female managers called out for help, the group were quick to provide assistance. A blue mat was laid out on the floor in the change room before Yuu Mashiro was easily lifted and placed on it. Emiko followed Natsusa, both waiting quietly on a bench for the blue-ette to wake up.
It hadn’t been long till he began to stir, alerting the raven-ette he would awaken soon. Catching Natsusa’s attention, she tilted her head forward, making sure he was aware. Her crimson orbs followed the orange-haired male as he squatted down beside him, waiting for his eyes to open.
The moment the first year's eyes opened, he was cheerfully greeted, “good morning.”
Surprised by his senior’s sudden announcement, he sat up quickly. Clutching his head as his world began to spin, realising he had moved too fast as he stuttered out, “w-what?”
Emiko shot Natsusa a glare as he sat back down next to her. With a gentle voice, “don’t push yourself too hard.”
Noticing the confusion, Natsusa clarified, “you passed out during training.” Rubbing his chin in thought, “probably due to anaemia.”
The surprise was written across Yuu’s face as he lifted his head before quickly bowing it, “I’m sorry. I’m fine now, thank you.” Pushing back the blanket covering him, only to stop and hold his stomach as it radiated with pain.
Neither Natsusa nor Emiko missed the action. Both were concerned that him passing out had to due with an underlining health condition.
Pushing himself to his feet, nodding his head before announcing, “let’s go to the hospital.”
Yuu’s eyes darted back and forth between the duo, “huh? N-No! I’m fine, really!” Dropping his clear blue eyes to the brown blanket, “and I have to practice more than anyone else. I’m already so far behind….”
The ravenette felt her heart squeeze at the statement. She understood exactly where he was coming from.
The orange-haired male took a step forward with his hand on his hips, determined to help the first year. “Mashiro-kun, don’t you think the senior students treat me awfully well?”
He scrunched his brow in confusion, not understanding his point, as he nodded his head, “huh? Oh, yes, they do.”
A cunning smile pulled at Natsusa’s lips, and his eyes danced with mischief, “right? Let me teach you the ropes.”
Emiko could only roll her crimson orbs while leaning back against the wall. She was already aware of a few of his manipulating tricks to get people to bend over for him. She could only stare as Natsusa held up three fingers, signalling how many phrases he would need.
“You just need to rotate these three sentences. Super easy.” Clearing his throat before clamping his hands together with his eyes widen, “huh? Really!” Quickly dropping the act, "now repeat.”
Crimson orbs could only watch as Yuu hopelessly tried to intimate his fellow first year. Covering a laugh with a cough as advice was given out to improve his technique. Letting out a soft sigh, she had tried a few of his tricks in the last couple of years on different people, but it never had the same effect.
“Alright, the second one,” letting him know he was moving forward. Crossing his arms over his chest, appearing serious as he nodded his head, “you sure know your stuff.”
Yuu lightly blushed again as he stuttered out the phrase.
Emiko pursed her lips together, realising that it would work on some of the senior team members who shared half a brain cell between them. Pouting slightly, she hoped she’d get to see it action one day.
“The last one is,” Natsusa exclaimed before holding his arm with his hand in a fist. “I learned a lot from you!”
Shaking her head, she could see how he’d wrapped all the seniors around his fingers with his sweet words.
“You’re really getting the hang of it now,” nodding his head in approval as his hands rested on his hips. Then lifting his hand with a pointed finger, “one more thing. This is the most important!”
Emiko scrunched her eyes in confusion, believing there would only be three phrases. Yuu was in the same boat, confused, thinking there wouldn’t be anything else to remember.
“If your senior wants to take you somewhere, you have to reply like this.” Clasping his hands together, eyes wide with excitement, “really! I really want to go!”
The raven-ette let out a low whistle. She could practically see the sparkles around him.
Staying back after watching Yuu fall into Natsusa’s trap, where he had to go to the hospital and get checked out. The first year was going to walk with her brother to the hospital, deciding it was best to give the duo some privacy. Though, she couldn’t help but be impressed by her childhood friend’s tactics, especially when they got the job done.
Sei and Emiko walked together after practice to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that Natsusa had been brought to after his accident. The sight of the place brought back memories that neither of them wanted to think about.
They walked through the sliding door only to stop as their eyes landed on Natsusa and Yuu. They were sitting on a lounge in the middle of the lobby. The blue-ette’s eyes revealing that his results were not what he wanted to hear.
“Do you love rugby?” Natsusa’s voice rang clear through the lobby.
Yuu clenched his fists as he kept his head down, “I don’t really know right now.”
“I see,” his green eyes stared straight head understanding his confused emotions. A small smile pulled at his lips before he continued, “I love it. Even now, when I can’t play. But I guess I look pretty pathetic clinging onto rugby while everyone pities me.”
Emiko was going to step in and proclaim to her childhood friend; it took more guts to return to the sport and only assist from the sidelines. Only to be stopped by her brother, keeping her in place with a firm hand on her shoulder. Her shoulders sagged, knowing he wanted to hear what Natsusa had to say before doing anything.
“That’s not true!” Yuu exclaimed as he turned to stare at the male next to him.
The corners of his lips lifted as he moved his arm over the back of the lounge, ignoring the outburst, “but I thought about it.” His green eyes glimmered with renewed hope, “if I worry about looking pathetic and can’t say I love rugby. It means I love myself more.” Lifting his head, it was clear to everyone in the room how he no longer cared what anyone else thought. “I think my pathetic self that keeps loving rugby is pretty cool.”
Bringing a hand to cover her mouth, Emiko had never once thought Natsusa was pathetic for staying connected to the sport he loved. It proved just how devoted he was to rugby.
Continuing with his speech, “I think it’s fine to quit.” Keeping his eyes forward, wanting Yuu to understand, “to be honest, it’d be hard for you to become a regular at our strong school. There’s no need to force yourself to cling onto the sport.” Turning in his seat to face the first year with all seriousness, “but let’s ignore all those things for now.” His eyes bored into him as he questioned, “do you love rugby?”
The blue-ette’s eyes were wet with tears, “I do….” He lifted his head as the first tear began to drop. “I really do love rugby!”
“I see,” the repeating first year broke into a closed eye smile.
A gurgling sound from Yuu’s stomach broke the moment between them. Clenching his stomaching in embarrassment, while his cheek flushed red.
Lightly chuckling, “your appetite is back. Right, let’s go get some udon noodles. They are gentle on your stomach.” Holding up a finger, “I know a place that’s delicious.”
“Huh? Right now?” his brow knitted together. “But I have to go back and report to the captain.”
Green eyes questioned his choice of words while leaning forward with his arms crossed, “hmm?”
Yuu took the hint as he jumped to his feet with his hands clasped together, “ah, um, really? I really want to go!”
“Good job!” Natsusa praised with a thumbs up.”
Emiko couldn’t help but let out a sigh after hearing the phrase he had learnt earlier that afternoon. Lifting her crimson orbs, she noticed Yuu staring at them, offering him a small smile and a wave.
“What?” Natsusa turned to see who the male next to him was staring at, only to spot two people he considered family, “Sei? Emiko?” Standing up from his seat, “you were there?”
Sei just nodded his head as his sister stayed quiet, “Yeah.”
“Perfect timing!” making his way over to the brother and sister, “want to go to that udon shop?” Turning to face the other male, “oh, Mashiro-kun, just eat what you can today.” Tilting his head, remembering his rugby days, “when I was playing rugby, watching other people eat put a lot of pressure on me.”
Ignoring his childhood friend Sei commented as he looked at the other male, “you’re fine. Natsu eats like a sparrow.”
“Isn’t that exaggerating a little too far?” Natsusa exclaimed.
Emiko shook her head and pointed out, “no, he eats more like an ant.”
“Not you too, Emi-chan!” crying out as she got involved, “and don’t use bugs as an example.”
Continuing to ignore him, Sei nods, “more like a tick.”
Shaking her head with a soft laugh, “let’s just go eat.”
Chapter Text
The ravenette pulled out her phone, checking the time as she made her way towards the field. After class, she had gone to the library to pick up some source material for a paper she had to do. It was one of the subjects she didn’t share with a handful of the rugby guys.
Strolling along the footpath with her hands shoved in her skinny jean pockets, she couldn't help but wonder how Yuu was going. It was his first day as a manager, and she hoped the guys on the team were treating him nicely.
Seeing the field up ahead, she picked up her pace, keen to see how her brother and childhood friend were doing. She had been helping Natsusa pack up his belonging the previous night with Sei as they got him ready to move out of the apartment and into the dorms. The thought of not having anyone close by made her uncomfortable, but she had to deal with it for now until she found a place closer to the university.
Her crimson orbs narrow as she notices the vice-captain Ikuto quietly approach the unsuspecting green-eyed first year. From where she was on the footpath, she could just hear him call out his name before giving him a noogie to the sides of his head. She knew he wouldn’t do anything to hurt the repeating first year, but she still wanted to smack his hands away just in case he did do something.
She was close enough to the conversation as she slowed her pace, watching Natsu hold the sides of his head.
“You said yourself that you needed more managers when I said I wanted to be one!” he cried out.
“That doesn’t mean I wanted you to recruit managers from the players!” his tone reflecting how unimpressed he was at the small male.
Noticing three third-years approaching, she cringed seeing the blonde from the other night who’d tried coming onto her. Slowing her pace, she hoped they didn’t notice her approach the closer they got to the first and fourth year.
Ethan was the first to comment as they approached, “if you’re going to recruit more managers. A sexy female would motivate me more!”
The brunette with dreadlocks nodded with enthusiasm, “that’s right! Bring a girl.”
Emiko could practically see their perverted thoughts as they blushed over the idea of a sexy female in skimpy clothes. Shaking her head, sensing they all shared the same brain cell.
The guy with the pink strips through his hair rubbed his chin in thought, “Natsusa, why don’t you get that dark haired girl who follows you to practice to become a manager? She would motivate us to train harder!”
Ikuto notices someone in the corner of his eye, turning his head ever so slightly only to spot the ravenette within earshot. Pressing his lips together to form a thin line before stepping forward to scold them only to be cut off.
Natsusa tilted his with a cheeky smirk, but his eyes told a different story as he knew how hard she had tried to join the sport, but in the end, she just practiced with him and her brother. “That would be a great idea, but I don’t think it would be very motivational,” he knew her after all, and even if she said she couldn’t stand the sport at the moment, he could see through that lie.
The three third years all sported a look of confusion, not knowing what the orange-haired manager was implying.
“But Yuu is really good as a timekeeper,” changing the topic to the blue-ette with his hands clasped together in front of him. “He’s smart; he can keep track of the budget, schedule and update the website.”
The blonde's mouth dropped in surprise, “well… When you put it that way…”
“As expected! You know your stuff because you're so smart,” he replied in fake awe.
Emiko rolled her eyes. She couldn’t believe how gullible they were to his charm. She had to cover her mouth as she went to snicker when the built guy with the dreadlocks threw in his five cents.
Turning his head away while rubbing the back of his neck, “I was thinking the same thing from the start.”
The first-year manager’s eyes widen as he leaned forward, “huh, really?”
Rubbing the tip of his nose, Syouta pointed out in a matter of fact tone, “they say experience players need a strong team of managers.”
Natsusa’s hand clasped at his chest with admiration, “I see! I Learned another thing from you!”
Hearing the praise from their underclassman, the three third years walked away praising him and his choice of people. While the vice-captain shook his head at how the first year played them for fools. Turning back to the manager with curious eyes, “sorry, but what did you mean about Emiko before?”
Coming to stand on the other side of the fence, the crimson eyed female batted her eyes with a pout, “you’re not saying bad things about me, are you, Natsu?”
Both flinched at the overly sweet tone as they turned to see the ravenette with a mischievous glint in her eyes. Waving his hands in front of himself Ikuto didn’t want to come off the wrong way, remembering she would have heard the whole conversation, “sorry about them.”
She shrugged her shoulder and waved him off, “don’t worry about it.” Lifting a questioning eyebrow towards her childhood friend, “I hope you’re not painting me in a bad light.”
A nervous smile grew across his lips as he rubbed the back of his head, “of course not.”
“Alright then!” stepping back from the fence and pointing towards the bleachers, “I’ll be over there if you need anything.”
The duo watched the petite female hiding beneath a baggy hoodie stroll away. Sharing a weary look before returning to training.
Chapter Text
It was after training, and Emiko, along with a few other first-years, were sitting on the bench taking in the app Yuu had made for the club. She couldn't help but be impressed at the amount of work he’d put into it. She couldn't help but sigh as he nervously stated it wasn't that hard. Still, he had clearly poured hours upon hours into it as all the league data had been correlated, and it was only a click away.
Shaking her head in wonder, knowing if he continued to refine the program and one day showed it off to the top professional leagues, he'd make a fortune. Though the ravenette was curious why he'd been set on playing rugby when he could have started a company with his extensive knowledge. Her thoughts were voiced by Natsusa at the same time.
Yayoi quick pulled the blue-ette into his arms, declaring, "Please stop! We can't live without Yuu anymore!"
Noticing the small blush dust across his face, she couldn't help but smile, knowing he'd been fully accepted into the club. Letting out a sigh, Kotori brought up the lineup for tomorrow’s game, their first official game for the season. Standing up as they continued to go on about other teams and people they'd gone to school with that were now third and fourth-year students.
Pulling her bag over her shoulder, she stood next to her brother who was waiting quietly for Natsusa to leave.
"Let's focus on our match against Hainoki first," standing up while clapping his hands together.
Stepping forward, Yuu asked, "are you really not coming to the match tomorrow?"
Emiko stepped forward and snatched his bag so he wouldn't have to carry it all the back. Lifting a brow curiously, "let me guess, you have something super important to do tomorrow?"
He nodded with his head, "yeah, and you're coming with me, right?"
Her crimson eyes narrowed at the statement; she had a hunch he was up to something. Pressing her lips together, knowing if she’d agreed, it would be easier to keep an eye on him, "yeah, I guess I am."
Offering her a quick smile before turning to Yuu and resting a hand on his shoulder, "the team will be fine as long as you're there."
Suppressing a chuckle seeing his cheeks light up with a blush, waving at the guys before turning to leave. Walking out of the field and making her way towards the footpath with the duo trailing not far behind. All the first years that were there had become accustomed to the crimson eyed female hanging around them, knowing she was Sei’s little sister while the older guys still hadn’t worked it out yet.
They stayed silent for a bit before the short first year turned on the spot, "what are you planning, Natsusa?"
His clear green eyes burned with determination, "I'm going to drag our spineless, God of Backs, Ibuki, home."
Emiko stiffened; she hadn't seen him since Natsusa was in the hospital. The blonde had been walking out with a basket of flowers that were clearly for his friend. The high schooler at the time had questioned him about what had happened, and he'd brushed her off like he hadn't known her most of her life.
Clenching her fists, "and how do you plan on doing that?"
Tilting his head with a smirk, "we are going to pay him a visit."
"We?" Lifting a brow, he was probably the last person she wanted to see.
"Yes, we are!" checking the time on his phone, "we got a couple of hours before we have to leave, so it's plenty of time to get ready."
Sei shook his head, not wanting to know what crazy plan his childhood friend was going to drag his sister into as he said goodbye before going their separate ways.
Running her tongue along the back of her teeth as she continued to walk, "and what am I getting ready for?"
"We are going to a nightclub,” smiling cheekily as he watched to see how’d she reply.
Her steps faltering knowing she was still underage, "I'm still too young to go to one..."
"It's okay! You just need to wear something that makes you look super cute, so no one asks how old you are," offering her a reassuring smile. "Maybe some make-up too," he pointed to his face.
A frown pulled at her lips as she grumbled, "this was a bad idea."
"Whatever you say, Emi-chan, but you agreed to come with me," humming happily as he continued on home with the ravenette trailing behind.
Stepping into the small apartment, the petite first year breathed out a heavy sigh while dropping her bag onto one of the chairs. She couldn't believe she'd let herself be pulled into another one of Natsusa's plans. Lowering her head, aware there was no way he'd let her escape from it now, so she might as well try and look the part.
It was almost time to leave when Emiko pulled on a pair of black boots before giving herself a once over in the mirror. She’d opted for a pair of ripped crimson skinny jeans and a black long-sleeved cross over midriff. She'd bought the top on impulse but never had the guts to wear it. She had a small amount of make-up on, just enough to make her eyes pop while her shoulder-length hair was down.
Picking up the small handbag before stepping out the front door to see if Natsusa was ready. The moment her eyes landed on him, her eyebrow twitched at how casually he was dressed, "are you serious?"
His eyes widened as he spotted Emiko all done up, "wow!" Pulling out his phone and snapping a quick picture of the rare sight before him, "you look so grown up! I gotta show Sei."
"No! Don't send that to him!" blurting out. Her brother would have a fit if he saw her with so much exposed skin.
Hitting the send button just as she'd finished, "too late. Now let's get going."
Pouting, knowing she'd be in trouble later, "why am I the only one dressed up?"
Natsusa took her wrist happily pulling her along behind him, "I promise you'll get into the place with no trouble!"
Rolling her eyes, she continued to let herself get pulled along.
~~~
Emiko breathed a sigh of relief as she managed to step past the bouncer without so much of an issue, thanks to Natsusa. Following the orange-haired male through the club to the third floor where all the private rooms were located.
“Which room is he in?” she asked as she stared at the door tags, already having an idea about what would be going on behind some of the closed doors.
Tapping his bottom lip as he checked the door numbers, “next one on the left.”
She stopped outside the room and scrunched her nose in disgust, hearing the fake laughter of females, “do you have a plan at all?”
“Just wait and see Emi-chan,” his cheeky smirk, not giving his plan away. “Now, follow my lead so we can say hello to Ibuki.”
Shaking her head, the ravenette followed her childhood friend into the private room. Spotting the three barely dressed women throwing themselves all over the blonde, she couldn’t keep the look of disgust off her face. Dropping into the seat next to Natsusa, she took a breath and kept her face neutral while watching the scene in front of her.
The three dolled up ladies were all touching the third-year and complementing his muscles while he just sat there lapping it up. “I mean, I gotta be prepared for when a woman needs an arm for a pillow, right?”
“I want to try!” the three cried out, falling for his line.
Natsusa leaned forward and rested his face in his hands before dryly commenting, “me too…”
The ravenette just sat next to with her arms cross, “yeah, I pass.”
The blonde’s eyes darted between the two arrivals, standing up in shock, not getting a chance to say anything.
“Huh? Where’d this boy come from?”
“He’s so cute!”
“Is he a friend of yours, Ibuki?”
The three women commented away on Natsusa before their eyes narrowed on the gorgeous ravenette.
“Who’s she?”
“We’re not sharing Ibuki with you!”
“She barely has any curves!”
“Good evening. I’m Natsusa Yuzuki, and this is Emiko Shingyouji,” introducing them both, not listening to the comments.
“Natsusa…. Emiko…” he was stunned, not expecting the duo to suddenly appear before him at a nightclub.
“Long time so see Ibuki senpai,” the retired rugby player sat up with a smile. “You didn’t even come to visit me once.”
The ravenette’s eyes narrowed, knowing this wasn’t the case. He was just a spineless coward.
“I thought you died,” Natsusa joked, but there was an undertone of silent disappointment.
Watching the duo stare each off, she couldn’t help but shake her head, “he dropped everyone and everything, so who knew he could have been dead.”
The trio of women, not sensing the underlying tension, burst the bubble but declaring, “let’s all drink together!” While the others girls just cheered, “let’s drink!”
Ibuki’s purple eyes glared at them, “no! Go home! Your both underage.”
“I’m old enough to drink this year,” his face dropped unimpressed. “How long has time stopped for you?”
Chewing the inside of her cheek, the crimson-eyed first year decided to stay silent as he was right. She was underage.
“Why are you both here?!” staring down at the duo, not understanding why they were in front of him.
“Please come back to rugby. Right now,” Natsusa asked in a forceful tone.
Before Emiko had a chance to voice her opinions, the brunette with her hair tied up commented in awe, “What? Ibuki, you play rugby.”
Rolling crimson orbs while scoffing, “used to play rugby.” Only to receive a glare from the trio of dolled-up women.
“I quit rugby,” clenching his fists, confirming what Emiko had stated.
The two rugby players stared each other off only to have Natsusa break the silence. “Why? Because of me,” he probed, already knowing the answer.
The blonde bit back, “no! It has nothing to do with you.” Turning to the side and waving them off, “now go home.”
Shaking her head at how stubborn Ibuki was being. Letting out a small yelp as she was pushed away from Natsusa by the dark-haired woman. Turning to tell them off only for her eyes to widen at the sight of them moving in on her childhood friend, “oi be careful!”
The moment they started to lean in and press themselves on Natsusa while asking him to drink and play with them was the instant he lost his balance on the seat and fell forward. Emiko’s eyes widen at the sight of him falling towards the floor, her mind instantly going into panic mood while the blond just called out his name and rushed to him.
Getting to him first, the ravenette rolled him over in a panic, “Natsusa.” She could feel him trembling in pain, “you’re gonna be okay. I promise.”
Ibuki got on his knees in front of her and pulled him into his arms, also noticing the pain. “I’m gonna take him out for now.”
Nodding her head, she watched at the blond effortlessly picked him up as if he weighed nothing. Taking a second to push herself up from the floor before turning to glare at the three women who’d caused him to tumble of his seat. Chewing her tongue between her molars, she wanted to yell and scream at them for being so stupid but instead chose to scoff and flip them off before exiting the room.
Chapter Text
Stepping out of the club door, Emiko spotted Natsusa sitting on a bench as Ibuki stood up and pulled out his phone. Quickly crossing the road, she took a seat next to Natsusa. Taking his hand in hers, squeezing it gently, “how’s the pain?”
He rubbed the back of his neck before shaking his head and squeezing her hand back.
Letting out a breath of relief, “at least we won’t need to go to the hospital.”
The blonde pulled out his phone and cursed, “I deleted the number... give me your smartphone. I’ll call Seiichirou.”
The ravenette stood up and shook her head, “you're not going to call Sei. He has a game tomorrow." Crossing her arms over her small chest, "and I can take care of Natsu."
"Natsusa, just give me the number," ignoring the crimson eyed female.
"Emi-chan is right. He doesn't need to worry about me," pushing himself up, so he was standing in front of the ex-player. Reaching forward, he pulled the blonde forward by his shirt, taking a whiff, "so you haven't fallen badly enough to start smoking."
Ibuki took a step back with fists clenched, "what the hell? Seriously, why did you come here? To harass me?"
Shaking her head, "he wants you back on the rugby team. Wasn't he clear enough before?"
His purple eyes glared at her before turning back to meet green ones, "no, that's impossible!"
"Is it that?" Natsusa lightly questioned before his face dropped, "or is it 'I injured Natsusa so I can't play rugby anymore!' That cliche of cliche?"
Chewing the side of her tongue, she knew the orange-haired male had just hit the nail on the head.
Ibuki let out a defeated sigh, "just go home. I'll take you. You moved out of the dorms, right? Where are you living now?"
"No thanks," dropping her arms, she was glad she’d tagged along for Natsusa’s sake, but her patience was wearing thin. "We can get back home by train."
"What are you doing here anyway, Emiko? Are you still tagging along behind your brother and Natsusa after all this time? Haven't you gotten your own friends yet?" the question burst from his mouth, finally over her jumping in.
Not giving her a chance to lash out at the blonde, Natsusa added, "I'm fine. It's a cervical hernia. The fact that I can move my neck means I'm fine." Taking Emiko's hand and pulling her away from the former player knowing if he didn't, she'd probably start throwing punches.
Gently pulling her hand from Natsusa's, she stepped over towards Ibuki, poking him in the chest, "he's not going to give up on you just because you turned your back on him." Poking him one last time before making her way back to where her childhood friend was waiting.
Taking his bag off him and dropping it over her shoulder, "give me this."
They continued to make their way towards the station at a much slower pace. Crimson orbs kept sneaking glances making sure he didn't overwork himself.
Rubbing a hand on the back of his neck, not enjoying how quiet she'd become after Ibuki's dig at her, "you want to come with me tomorrow?"
Lifting a brow curiously, "you're going to his place to stir up trouble, right?"
A cheeky smile lit up his eyes, "possibly."
Pressing her lips together as they arrived at the station, "alright, I'll come just to keep an eye on you after tonight."
"I'm fine, Emi-chan, I promise," clapping his hands together, knowing she was worried about him. "oh, and don't worry, I will make Ibuki pay for what he said to you."
Pursing her lips, she knew whatever he had instore for the blonde was worse than she could ever come up with, "thank you and what time tomorrow."
"We need to leave about six-thirty," brightly smiling, knowing the female hated waking up early.
Her shoulders dropped as she groaned at having to wake up early, "fine. I'll up ready by then."
Getting back to her apartment, she quickly cleaned herself up before getting into bed. Scoffing as she rolled over, shoving the thoughts of Ibuki to the back of her mind. Whispering to herself, "I can't believe I had a crush on him growing up. He turned out to be such an asswipe." Pulling the blankets over her head and letting herself be taken to sleep.
Chapter Text
A yawn escaped the ravenette's lips as she stepped out of the apartment just before six-thirty in a pair of black leggings and a baggy lime green hoodie. Rubbing the bags under her eyes, she had to blink a few times to see Natsusa clearly. Scrunching her eyes, she stared at him for a few minutes as she took in what he was wearing, shrugging z shoulder, knowing he had a weird taste in fashion. Offering him a small wave, she didn't understand how he could be so wide-eyed and bushy-tailed after everything last night.
Offering her a bright smile, “morning Emi-chan. You ready to go?”
Stifling another yawn with the back of her hand, “hey. Yeah, but we gotta get coffee along the way.”
A chuckle escaped his lips as he nodded, “of course.”
~~
Arriving at the apartment complex, Emiko tilted her head, curious how they would get into the building as the main door had an auto-lock. Pursing her lips, wondering what Natsusa was planning to do once he got into the building.
Letting out a sigh ad rolling her head towards Natsusa, “so how are we gonna get in?”
His green eyes glowed mischievously, spotting a delivery van unloading and heading in towards the foyer. Turning to the ravenette with a sweet smile, “Emi-chan, I need you to get upset.”
Scrunching her brow in confusion, “what have you got planned?”
A smirk played along his lips as he shrugged, “oh, nothing much. You just need to cry a bit.”
“Okay…” her mind began to dig up a few awful memories from when she was a child. It took a moment before tears began to well up in her ruby eyes before spilling over.
Grabbing her wrist and dragging her towards the door, “just wobble your bottom lip a bit.”
Suppressing an eye roll, she made her bottom lip wobble as the tears continued to flow. Seeing her reflection in the glass as they got closer to the building, she wanted to pat herself on the back.
She continued to get pulled along by the small male as they made a beeline straight for the front only to be stopped by the delivery man.
The middle-aged man was about to tell them to wait and use their key to get into the building when he took in the sight of the very upset small female and the annoyed male. Clearing his throat, he stared at the dark-haired female in concern, “is everything alright here, miss?”
Pressing her lips together and willing more tears to flow, she shook her head while sniffling, “n-no.”
Before the delivery driver could say anything back, Natsusa stepped forward and whispered something to the guy. The moment he stepped back, the delivery man’s face changed as he understood the situation. Nodding his head, he just waved them through, “I hope you both get everything sorted.”
Natsusa nodded and thanked the older male before taking Emiko’s hand and pulling her into the building. When they were away from the delivery man, he let go of her hand and pulled out a few tissues, offering them to ravenette.
Taking the tissues and wiping her face, “thanks.” Furrowing her eyebrows as she threw them in the bin, “what did you say to him anyway?”
His green eyes darted to the side as he spotted the post boxes, “nothing important, I promise.” Pointing to the side, “we should check Ibuki’s mail.”
Pressing her lips together, unsure of what her friend had planned, “alright.” Stepping forward, she spotted that the mailboxes needed a code to opened, “you already know his code, don’t you?”
“He hasn’t changed at all,” pressing a few buttons, the door clicked open, revealing a full mailbox. Pulling out all the mail and handing it over before sliding a club application in nicely, “Emi-chan can you hold these for a bit.”
Humming as she flicked through the blonde’s mail, taking note that a few letters had been marked overdue. Shaking her head before shoving them in her hoodie pocket, “he’s gonna get his power turned off soon if these aren’t sorted.” Following the green-eyed male to the elevator, “you know he’s still gonna be asleep.”
Stepping out once they had reached his floor with a lopsided smile, “well, we just need to wake him up then.”
They stood outside an apartment door marked ‘Ueoka’. The small first-year watched as the green-eyed manager began to hammer the doorbell. When nothing happened, he began to call out while pressing the button.
“Senpai!” Natsusa hollered out, pressing the bell, “Please open the door.” Still not hearing any movement on the other side her began banging his fist on the door while calling out, “Senpai, I know you’re in there. Senpai!”
Pressing her lips together to hold back a chuckle at how intimidating he was trying to be. Her crimson orbs followed him as he stepped back from the door with his fists clenched, curious what he would say next, only to choke on her saliva as the words left his mouth.
Sucking in a breath, he furrowed his eyebrows and called out with a deeper voice, “hey, open up! You impregnated Emiko, and now you’re staying silent!”
Her face flushed, realizing Ibuki would’ve heard those words. Slapping her hands over her face and shaking her head, trying to get rid of any dirty thoughts that were lingering around.
The door swung open, and the blonde sweatdropped at his childhood friend he’d injured, “you…” His purple eyes widened the moment he spotted Emiko standing off to the side with a flushed face.
Not giving either of them a chance to comment, Natsusa clasped his hands behind him, “huh, did those words ring a bell?”
Ignoring the comment, his eyes trained back on the small orange-haired male wearing shorts, “how did you get past the auto-lock?”
At that same moment, the delivery man for earlier walked past, pushing a large carton on a trolley down the hall. Emiko’s crimson orbs followed him for a moment, wondering what Natsusa had said to him. Flicking her gaze back to the blonde as he sighed, not wanting to deal with the duo.
With his lips still tilted up in a smile, the green-eyed first-year stepped forward, “can we come in?”
Blocking the doorway with his arms, “no!”
Tilting his head innocently, “I’ll start screaming again.”
“Natsu, please don’t,” Emiko sighed as she ran a hand over her messy locks.
“Don’t push your luck,” Ibuki barked. Leaning forward, trying to intimidate the smaller male, “if I got serious, I could easily take you down. Got it?”
Bristling at the words, the crimson eyed first year stepped forward, about to rip the ex-player a new one, only to be stopped.
“I don’t think you have the guts to do that,” a provoking smirk appeared on the Natsusa’s face as he shoved his hands in his pockets.
The larger male leaned forward, “wanna try me?” In the next moment, he was wheezing from getting hit in the stomach, “o-ouch!”
Scrunching her brow, not understanding what had just happened until her eyes noticed something shiny on her friend’s hand.
“Oh. Sorry. That must have hurt,” faux innocence dripped from Natsusa’s lips. “I forgot I was wearing brass knuckles.”
Slapping a hand over her mouth in an attempt to stop the laughter from escaping, she turned around, trying to control herself.
Clutching his stomach while wheezing, “I-I see… I guess it can’t be helped if it was an accident... yeah…”
Emiko’s crimson orbs watched as the former stand-off slumped to the floor, still clutching his stomach in pain. She knew it must have hurt hell, but she didn’t pity him after everything that had happened.
Resting his hands on his hips while shaking his head, “I can see through your actions, Ibuki-senpai.” Natsusa lifted a club application form, “here you are. I bought this for you today. Please fill it out and bring it back on Monday.” Placing the paper in front of him, not listening to any of his protests. Standing up straight with a hand on his hip, “oh, that’s right, we got your mail.”
Pulling the mail out from her hoodie pocket, “you need to check your mailbox more often.” Leaning forward and dropping them in front of the blonde, “oh, if you don’t pay your bills properly, they will start by turning off your electricity.”
“See you later, Senpai. We’ll come again another time,” Natsusa sang out before turning to leave,
Straightening herself, Emiko heard the blonde whisper out, “he even knows the code to my post box.”
She pressed her lips together while her crimson orbs stared down easily seeing the conflict in his eyes, “he knows you better than yourself.” Turning and following her fellow first year, “see ya.”
Stepping into the elevator beside Natsusa, she waited for the door to close before asking, “so… what are you gonna do now?”
Chapter Text
Spinning the pen between her fingers, Emiko tried to study while sitting at the table with her brother, Natsusa and Sunao. She should have gone back to her apartment to study but didn't want Natsusa to walk back by himself later. She knew her brother would offer to walk him home, or he could catch a bus or taxi back, but she kept telling herself it was for her peace of mind.
Her crimson orbs stayed on her work as she listened to the conversation going on between her seniors. The first year couldn't help but tightly clench her pen as the conversation turned towards Ibuki.
"Natsu-san, are you really trying to bring him back?" the lilac haired second-year right centre questioned.
Not even bothering to lift his head, the repeating first year replied, "I am."
"And did he say he was coming back?" the second year leaned forward, wanting to know more.
Natsusa paused for a moment before continuing with his work, "well, I yelled at his front door yesterday. Then punched him with some brass knuckles, but that didn't seem to work."
Emiko pressed her lips together; it had been satisfying to know he had punch Ibuki in the gut with brass knuckles.
Sunao's brows pulled together, not understanding the orange-haired first year, "why did you think that would work in the first place?" Shaking his head, not even bothering to try and understand his twisted ways, "why do you want him back anyway?"
The ravenette had also wondered the same thing after tagging along with her childhood friend while silently harassing the Ibuki with club application forms.
Shrugging his shoulders while smiling, "I think that our team has a higher chance of winning if he comes back."
The statement had caught the attention of a number of rugby players in the room. Even Sei had lifted his head, wanting to know what Natsusa had planned. Emiko sighed as she leaned her head against her arm while clicking her pen.
The lilac haired second year hummed as he sat back unimpressed, "but we've won the last two fixtures in the Kansai League without Ibuki-senpai."
"True, but don't you think it'll be hard to go against Koufuuin without him?" Lifting his head with eyes burning with passion, "I want us to get first place in the Kansai League."
Tapping her pen against her textbook, she was already over the conversation and had to suppress an eye roll.
Natsusa continued knowing precisely what to say to convince the male, "you know it yourself, Su-san. How smoothly things went when he was number ten." His brows drop into a mischievous look poking at the second year's twisted side, "wasn't it nasty?"
Stunning the second year, who clearly remembered how things were when the blonde played on the team. Pausing for a moment before agreeing with the cunning first year, "well, that's true…"
The green-eyed male kept going knowing he'd convinced the right centre player, "And if Ibuki-senpai comes back. Your twisted playstyle would really shine!"
Flicking his hair back, admitting defeat, "I can't win against you, Natsu-san." A perfect lilac eyebrow lifted as he questioned, "do people who grow up around your nature become like you?"
Emiko could only scoff as she leaned back, "no, you just learn how to deal with it."
Not even glancing at Emiko, already knowing her opinion on the topic, "I don't think that matters." Natsusa quipped back, "even someone like you who grew up in such a high-class area of the city could end up with a mouth from the slums."
Flinging his head back, laughing, "what a mouth!" Sunao wiped a fake tear from her cheek, "Natsu-san, you're such a smooth talker."
The crimson eyed first year decided she's had enough of the conversation. Clenching her jaw, she closed her book before shoving it in her bag and pushing herself back from the table, catching the attention of the three males at the table, "I'm gonna head out."
Sei stared at his little sister for a moment before nodding his head, "okay."
Not even waiting for a response from the other two, she pushed in her chair and made her way out of the building.
Walking down the footpath, she couldn't help but sigh. She knew the Natsu only had the teams best interest at heart in wanting Ibuki back. But she couldn't let go of her resentment towards him.
Flashback
It had only been a few weeks since the accident. Emiko had been trying to visit the injured male as much as possible while in her final year of school. The teen finally had a free moment that weekend and had taken a train then a bus to get to the hospital.
Making her way through the hospital ground, she neared the hospital entrance only to spot a familiar blonde exiting with a basket of flowers. It was her first time seeing Ibuki since the accident, and he was dumping the bouquet in the burnable rubbish bin. His purple eyes looked defeated.
Clenching the straps of her backpack, she picked her pace, needing to talk to him. She knew from her brother that he hadn't been to see Natsusa yet. He had also dropped out of the team with a single phone call and was ignoring everyone. The teen tried to keep her emotions in check, wanting to give the tall male a chance to explain before jumping to conclusions.
The blonde hadn't even left the cover of the building's awning when a familiar voice called out to him.
"Ibuki!"
His purple orbs widened, realising who was quickly approaching him, "Emiko..."
Coming to a stop in front of Ibuki, who towered over her small form, "did you even go in and see him?"
His head turned to the side, not able to look the small female in the eyes, "I couldn't."
Crimson orbs narrowed as anger welled, "couldn't or wouldn't? There's a difference."
Clenching his teeth, knowing she was still in high school and had made an effort to come all the way to visit. It made him feel shameful for being a coward, but he couldn't face his friend after what he'd done, "you wouldn't understand."
Her temper flared as she bit back, "well, just explain it then."
Purple orbs stared down at the teen who had grown up around him; she was like a sister to him. His shoulders dropped as he whispered, "no. It's complicated."
Having enough of his excuses, she snapped, "he's one of your best friends!" Taking a step forward and poking his well-defined chest, "just go in there and see him!"
Taking a step around the ravenette, "I can't..."
Emiko couldn't stop the tears from rolling down her cheek as Ibuki walked away without a glance. "You're a coward," the words slipped from her lips. "and I wish it was you, not Natsusa, in that hospital bed."
What she didn't know was he wished it was that way too.
End flashback.
Emiko stepped into her apartment and dropped her bag on the floor. Pulling a juice out of the fridge, taking a sip of the cold beverage, she was just going to take one day at a time.
Chapter Text
A/n: Hey readers, been nearly a year since I updated... sorry about that! I hope you enjoy this chapter and let me know what you think xx
Everything had happened in the blink of an eye; Ibuki was going to return. Natsusa's words had done what they always do and got the blonde back into the sport. It happened on the only day where Emiko headed straight back to her apartment instead of hanging around after classes.
The raven-ette was vividly told all the details of Natsusa's afternoon with Ibuki when he returned home. She had just nodded along to his story, trying to keep herself composed when all she wanted to do was scream and swear.
On the other hand, the team had mixed responses about the blonde wanting to return. Emiko had been sitting in her regular spot, waiting for the team meeting to be over. The unhappy voices of specific teammates could be heard through the glass door, thanks to the quietness of the night.
Emiko could hear Natsu's voice clearly. He used his way with words to get Ibuki onto the B team for an upcoming practice match where he would get a chance to prove himself or become an errand boy. The raven-ette could only hope for the latter outcome; it would serve him right for being a coward.
When the team began exiting the meeting room, Emiko pushed herself up and into a standing position. She immediately noticed the blonde tagging along with her brother and Natsusa. Making her way over, quietly hoping he wouldn't be joining them for dinner.
Natsusa smiled brightly and waved as he saw the crimson-orbed female approach, "Emi-chan, we're going back to Ibuki's to eat."
Her step flattered; that was the last place she wanted to go, "oh, that's nice."
Immediately noticing her change of attitude, his smile dropped as he questioned, "What's wrong? You don't want to join in?"
Shoving her hands into her hoodie pocket to keep them from fidgeting, "no, thanks. I'm gonna head back. I got work to do. I'll talk to you later."
Natsusa pursed his lips, he had known Emiko nearly all her life, and she never turned down a meal with them. She'd always tagged along with them since they were little. The only difference was today, Ibuki was with them for the first time in seven months. The repeating first year could only guess his words from the other night still stung.
The trio could only watch as Emiko turned on the spot with clenched teeth and head in the opposite direction. This didn't go unnoticed by a few players who'd never seen her leave without Natsusa and Sei.
During the week leading up to the practice match, the team noticed the shift in the raven-ette's behaviour. She would typically tag along everywhere Natsusa and Sei went but with the addition of Ibuki, she was always quick to excuse herself. The behaviour had her brother and the green-eyed first year concerned, along with the other first years they would typically eat dinner with. No one wanted to question the behaviour, but they all realised who'd brought on the change.
The third and fourth years, who were still under the impression that Emiko and Natsusa were an item, just thought they were having relationship problems. None of them thought the addition of the purple-eyed third year would mean anything for the duo.
It was finally the morning of the practice match, where Ibuki had to prove himself. Emiko had arrived with her brother and Natsusa after helping move his belongings. She had lazily dropped herself into a prime spot on the bleachers. It was the perfect spot to observe the rugby players' fine form as they warmed up.
She had spent a hot moment raking her eyes over the A team, wearing red singlets. It was no wonder they were the main lineup for the team with how skilled they all were. Her crimson orbs drifted over to the B team, wearing green singlets. It was easy to spot Ibuki as he warmed up by himself. Pressing her lips together, she would have liked for him to fail, but after all these years of playing, she wouldn't be surprised if he managed to get his shit together.
Halfway through warmups, she was reminded of how approachable the blonde was as a player. He was able to slowly get the B team to open up to him, apart from the third year with the red streak through his hair.
Pressing her tongue against the back of her teeth, Emiko shifted her focus to the A team. They were all throwing nasty looks toward the B team as they centred around Ibuki. After all, they were the team he had let down with just a phone call.
The hairs on her neck stood on edge at the feeling of being watched. Shifting in her seat, she spotted her brother and Natsusa. Offering them both a smile and a small wave before the whistle blew and the game commenced.
The first half of the game was almost too painful to watch. Emiko wanted to rip her hair out at how pathetic the B team were against the A team. They had next to no teamwork and couldn't complete a play.
Hearing the halftime whistle blow was the final straw that broke her. She'd had enough of this mess and was going to do something about it. Running a hand through her shoulder-length hair, she rose to her feet before pushing up the sleeves of her lime green baggy jumper.
Emiko sucked in a breath of confidence that what she was about to do wouldn't blow up in her face, and her brother didn't need to come save her arse. With determination, the petite first year headed down the stairs before marching onto the field straight towards Ibuki.
Ibuki tried to stop himself from jumping as crimson orbs glared up at him. "Emiko?"
With all the resentment she could build, she spat out, "what the hell do you think you're doing out there?"
His purple orbs were wide as his mouth opened and closed a couple of times, not knowing what to say. He could only stare down at her pissed-off small form.
"Your plays are pathetic, you're not communicating with your team, and you need to pull your head out of your arse." Letting him know the main problems since he wasn't saying anything.
The B team members had stopped and moved closer to the duo, wanting to hear what the raven-ette was going to say.
"Oi, what do you think you're saying?" Taisei, with the red-streaked hair, was the only one to step forward, annoyed at the female.
Ibuki put a hand out to stop the third year before he got too close to Emiko. Letting out a defeated sigh, "it's fine." Turning back to raven-ette, he hated to admit it, but he had to tell them, "it doesn't look it, but Emiko here can play better than most."
Tapping her foot, they were wasting time, time she could be explaining how to make their game better.
Ignoring the surprised stares, he asked, "what are you thinking?"
Meanwhile, Yuu's eyes widened at the sight of Emiko making her way across the field. Taking a few steps closer to his senior to catch his attention, "Natsusa."
Turning to question the blue-ette, the question died in his mouth as he spotted the raven-ette headed towards Ibuki. He grimaced, "oh, that's not good."
The words caught Sei's attention. Lifting his head, his crimson orbs followed Natsusa's line of sight. Releasing a quiet sigh, he hadn't expected to see his sister standing up to Ibuki. The determination across her face was clear; she was putting him in his place and telling him what needed to be fixed. From the look on the blonde's face, it was easy to see he was listening to his sister. Nodding his head, "it'll be fine."
Some of the A team heard their new managers and shifted their gazes to the other side of the field. It only took a few moments before the whole green singlet side were staring at the lime green hoodied female, instructing the red side.
"What is she doing?" Gakuto questioned as he stepped forward.
The bubbly green-eyed first year smiled as he turned on the spot to face the team, "Emi-chan is going to change the pace for the next half."
"Does she even know anything about rugby?" one of the guys questioned from the group.
Crossing his arms while pressing his lips together and nodding his head, "she loves the sport and certainly knows how to play." His eye orbs ran over a few players as he rubbed his jaw, "Emi-chan could probably outplay most of the team if she was given a chance."
"You can't be serious?!" "What?" "You're kidding!" A chorus of responses rang out after hearing the tiny female could even be in the same league.
"It's not a lie," his brow pulled together before brightening. "Emi-chan started playing at the same time as Sei and I. She always had to train with us since there was never a girls' team to play on."
Sei continued to stare at his sister. He was glad he didn't have to swoop in and save her. "When she couldn't find anyone to play with, she just practiced with Ibuki, Natsusa and I. She'll make the next half interesting."
The team could only stare at the duo, none of them truly understanding the impact the petite female would have on the team.
Chapter Text
A/n: hey readers, sorry for the wait! been a bit busy with family and work, I hope you enjoy this chapter and let me know what you think. Until next time happy reading xx
It was as Sei and Natsusa predicted; the B team were a completely different side in the second half of the game. Emiko had changed things in such a short time; not one of them wanted to admit what she’d be able to do in a game If she’d been given a fair chance growing up.
The B team had taken the small dark-haired female’s advice once they had realised she knew what she was talking about, along with Ibuki vouching for her. None of them realised what they had lacked until it was pointed out and clear instructions were given on how to improve.
Meanwhile, the A team were impressed. They would have never thought the crimson-eyed girl coming to training every day would have picked up on their weakness, let alone tell the B side how to improve their game and exploit them during a game. The team couldn’t wait to speak with her after they finished up. It also made their chest ache to realise her love for the sport, the thought of her never getting a fair chance because of her gender was a hard pill to swallow as the guys were given plenty of opportunities and chances she never received.
Emiko kept her lips pressed tightly together in a thin line with her arms crossed. She was glad the green singlet side had made a comeback and was using her advice. But it didn’t change the fact that the red singlet side were the A-side. They were the school’s main team with plenty of experience and muscle to back it. After leaving the field, she had no idea if they would use the information she provided or if they would brush the advice off; it was hard to say. Instead of moving back to her seat, the short first year had taken a spot along the fence between the field and spectators, giving her a clear view of the game.
When there were only a few minutes left on the clock, Emiko decided to take her leave, not wanting to be harassed after the game. She knew the B team weren’t going to win, but it warmed her that they’d used her advice and made a solid comeback after halftime, surprising the other side. Grabbing her things, the raven-ette didn’t bother glancing back as she left the grounds hoping no one would notice her absence once the game ended.
It was when the game ended, and players were discussing the improvements in the second half. The first-string players commented on the dramatic changed in the second half and how enjoyable the game had become.
Ibuki stepped forward, offering an explanation, “Emiko was the main reason the game changed during the second half.”
“She couldn’t have had that much impact in those few minutes between halves?” Taiseri narrowed his eyes and questioned skeptically.
“No, he’s right. She knew exactly what needed to be said and done.” Toranoshin, the fourth year, confirmed.
Syouta ran a hand through his light brown and pink hair and commented, “to be honest, for someone that small, she was scary.”
Sei nodded as he listened to the team’s words about his sister while his scanning the stands trying to locate her.
“We should really be thanking her,” Kotori, the blonde first-year stated.
“Sorry, senpai’s, but that’s not going to happen,” Natsusa announced to the group, who turned to stare at him.
“Why wouldn’t you want the team to thank her after she changed the pace of the second half?,” the vice-captain questioned not understanding what was going through the injured first’s mind.
A pout formed on his lips as she shook his head with his hands out, “she left before the game finished.”
“What? Why?” the B team all questioned at once.
Pressing his lips into a thin line trying to work out the best way to explain the crimson eyed female, “Emiko can be a bit odd sometimes, but she’ll come around eventually.”
The team took the answer, realising they would have to wait to see her in class or at training to ask their questions.
~~~
The walk back to the apartment felt weird for Emiko, she had gotten used to it over the last couple of days after avoiding training since Ibuki was there, but it was still awkward knowing Natsusa was no longer staying in the apartment next to her and was now living at the dorms.
A giggle bubbled and spilled out at the thought of Yasunari’s reaction when he realised he now has to share a room with Natsusa. She knew they were both in for a rude shock. Claiming herself down took a moment before she slowly continuing on her way.
~~~
Emiko rolled over after waking up and checking the time on her phone. Chewing the inside of her cheek, the last place she wanted to go to was school after the game yesterday. The team would have questions, and even if they didn’t need to know, she still didn’t want to be asked. Rolling the idea of pulling a sickie around in her mind for a minute before grabbing her phone and texting her brother, letting him know, so he wouldn’t worry.
The young adult spent the majority of the day lazying about her apartment on her phone while eating snacks. It wasn’t until the afternoon that she began to feel restless and caged in. Clicking her tongue as she stood in the centre of her small apartment debating what to do. With one final click she decided to go out and stretch her legs. Changing into her running outfit before making her way out of the apartment and into the fresh air.
Bouncing on the spot for a few minutes and stretching before starting out with a light jog and building up speed. Emiko always enjoyed running, it helped clear her head when things got hard or confusing. It offered an escape from the reality of the world around her. The only downside size was that she tended to get in a state where she often got lost.
It was half an hour later that Emiko stopped for a break. She’d ended up in a park, taking in the scenery before pulling out her phone and looking up directions to get back. Staring at her phone, she knew the rugby would be close to finishing practice, then they would be having a team meeting where Ibuki’s faith would be announced.
Catching her train of thought, Emiko couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She shouldn’t care about Ibuki, and what was going to happen with the team. It didn’t matter what happened today. Natsusa would be bursting at the seems to tell her all the stuff she’d missed out on throughout the day anyway .
Quickly shaking her head to push down any rising thoughts about the rugby team before checking her location and the directions she needed to take to get back. Taking a deep breath to mentally prepare herself for the run home before heading back.
Arriving back at the apartment, she couldn’t stop the disappointment from creeping in when no one was waiting. Pushing that feeling down, she stepped through the door, in much need of a shower. Her plans for the night included takeout and binge-watching a series that already had two seasons, with the third coming out in a few days.
~~~
The constant sound of rhythmic knocking pulled Emiko from her restless sleep, she hadn’t gone to sleep until around two. With a groan and too much effort, she managed to drag herself out of bed and toward the front door. Trying to get her eyes adjusted was fruitless as they stayed blurry; they weren’t committed to waking up early. She attempted to squint and see who was at the door through the peephole but gave up as everything stayed hazy. A defeated sigh escaped her lips, and she accepted whatever fate had planned for her on the other side of the doorway. It took a few solid blinks to realise she was staring up at her older brother. He’d been the one to wake her before her alarm, even though he knew how much she loved sleeping.
Emiko’s brow scrunched in confusion as her voice came out croaky, “why are you here?”
Not bothered by his sister’s state, he simply shook his head, “time to get dressed.”
It was still too early to bother putting up a fight, so the dark-haired first-year just moved to the side and let him into the small apartment while repeating the question, “why are you here?”
“To make sure you go to school,” the words quietly left his lips as Sei made his way to the kitchen table. The second year knew his sister, and if he hadn’t turned up, she wouldn’t have wanted to turn up to school that day. As her brother, he just wanted to ensure she got there and wasn’t bombarded with questions within the first five minutes.
Emiko could feel her eye twitch, Sei had turned up just to make sure she went to school. Rubbing her temple as she groggily stood there, “I was going to go today. You didn’t need to come over.”
The two crimson-orbed siblings stared at each other, waiting for the other to break.
Clenching her teeth as she stamped her foot, knowing her brother would always win in a stare-off, “fine.”
The second year shook his head as the raven-ette shuffled away to get ready for the day. After waiting twenty minutes, Emiko re-emerged out of the bathroom dressed in her usual black skinny jeans, and an orange baggy jumper. Her hair had decided not to sit flat today, so it had been pulled up into space buns.
Sei nodded his head approvingly before holding up her bag and exiting the apartment. Emiko grumpily trailed along, cursing her brother, making sure he paid when they stopped for her morning coffee.
The siblings walked to school in comfortable silence, neither bothered by the lack of chatter.
It wasn’t till they were on school grounds that the reality of what had happened two days ago hit. Her hands came together as she began to ring them together.
“Emi-chan!”
The raven-ette couldn’t stop herself from flinching as her name was called. Her crimson orbs locked onto Natsusa, and the group he was walking to class with. The urge to turn tail and run was stomped out as a firm hand came to rest on her shoulder, reminding her that she still had to attend classes. Not wanting to deal with a group of guys waiting for them to catch up and ask numerous questions, she did the only thing that came to her mind… dart across the street and make a run for it in the opposite direction to avoid them.
Chapter Text
A/n: Hey readers, i know it's been a whole year since i updated! i know i'm slack but last year was busy and combined with poor time management it was hard! i hope you enjoy this chapter and let me know what you think. Until next time happy reading xx
The team could only stare wide-eyed and confused as they watched Emiko dart across the street, barely getting missed by a car. They had no idea why she would react that way, so they turned to Sei, standing now by himself, shaking his head in disappointment.
"She looked like a scared animal running away," a fourth-year commented, and the team nodded their heads in agreement.
"I thought Emi-chan would be happy to see us," Natsusa mumbled as he pouted, staring at her retreating figure.
Letting out a sigh, Sei shrugged. He would have gone a different way if he had known the team would ambush them.
"Do you think she'll come to training this afternoon?" Yuu asking hopefully.
Pursing his lips, Natsusa shook his head, "Mostly likely not."
The group began to break off and head toward the different directions of classes. All of them were curious if Emiko would attend the afternoon training.
~~~
Emiko wasn't sure why she had run off, but the moment she saw the team approaching, something in her body told her to run, and she did. The buildings blurred together as she darted between them. When she finally stopped after taking a few odd turns, she was utterly lost. Her heart was pounding in her chest. She cruised herself at her cowardness. She couldn't believe what she'd just done.
Crouching down against the side of a building, desperately trying to catch her breath, she fumbled to pull out her phone to see if she could quickly get to her first class without any issues. It took a few tries to get her fingers to cooperate as they shakily moved across the screen. Studying the map for a few minutes until she nodded and worked out where she was and the direction she needed to head while taking note of the time.
Her phone buzzed with a message from Sei: "Don't be late to class."
She rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath, her annoyance evident, as she begrudgingly acknowledged her brother's unwavering insistence on attending school. Nevertheless, she took a moment to compose herself as she stood up, stretching and letting her surroundings calm her racing thoughts.
The first-year took her time as she made her way back, making sure to keep an eye out for any glimpses of the rugby team. It wasn't until the last moment that she managed to slip into class and grab a spot up the back. She could see Natsusa checking the time from where she was sitting and looking around. She realised he was waiting for her to arrive and sit with him like normal, but that meant sitting around the team's first years, which was a hard no. So, she sank lower in the chair and kept the spot in the back for now.
When class was over, she was the first to exist. She took herself the long way to her next lesson, which was how the day would progress. Throughout the day, Emiko constantly checked her surroundings for glimpses of the rugby team. The paranoia of being bombarded with questions kept her on her toes and always one step ahead. Every corner turned, every crowded walkway or hallway avoided – it became second nature to avoid the rugby team.
As classes progressed, fatigue began to set in. Emiko's initial adrenaline wore off, and the weight of her constant vigilance was heavy on her shoulders. She just had to last until the day was over and make the walk home. As the day slowly went by, Emiko felt like each minute of not getting spotted by the rugby team was a small victory. By the time her last class had ended, she was running on fumes.
She exited the classroom quickly while trying to stifle the yawn escaping her lips. All she wanted to do was slowly walk home, but she had one stop before leaving the school grounds: the library. The first-year needed material for an assessment and knew getting the book before anyone else got it would be better.
With another yawn, she headed in the direction of the separate building.
Entering the warm library, Emiko couldn't stop herself from releasing an ear-popping yawn. Eyeing off the chairs, she just wanted to sit for five minutes, knowing the team would be busy. Slowly strolling around, she found a secluded corner and sank into a comfortable chair. The soft hum of whispered conversations and rustling pages provided a soothing backdrop. It wasn't long before the gentle rhythm lulled her into a quick nap.
Unbeknownst to her, a certain rugby player had been tasked with finding Emiko to ensure she attended the afternoon rugby training. His search had taken him through the school grounds, corridors, and, lastly, the library. Spotting Emiko slumped over, slumbering peacefully, he couldn't help but be surprised. It was the last place he'd expect her to be asleep.
The team had been confused by Emiko's unusual behaviour earlier in the day, and her sudden disappearance only added to their concern. They had asked their vice-captain to assist in locating and bringing her to training, knowing his soft demeanour would be hard for her to say no to.
Ikuto cautiously approached, not wanting to startle her when she woke up. "Emiko," he softly called her name before tapping her shoulder.
The petite first-year jolted awake, he eyes widening as she took everything in.
Offering a sympathetic smile, "Sorry to wake up, but I was asked to ensure you attend training this afternoon."
Shaking her head as she started at the vice captain's gentle face, "I-I don't want to go."
Taking the seat next to hers, he leaned forward, "You know they sent me to make sure you would be there."
The atmosphere in the library became tense as Emiko's soft plea hung in the air, "Please just say you couldn't find me."
His brows creased in concern, keeping his eyes on the first year, "you don't want to face everyone after this morning and after the game?" The question came out more like a statement, an understanding of the unspoken turmoil the raven-ette was going through.
Emiko sighed as she acknowledged her struggle, "It's obvious, isn't it?"
Nodding his head, "It is, but I know you have your reasons. Natsusa explained a little bit after the team questioned how you would know anything about rugby."
She rolled her bottom lip between her teeth before hesitantly asking, "How much did he say? "
Ikuto leaned forward, his eyes reflecting a blend of understanding and concern. "Natsusa shared how much you love the sport and a bit about your struggle to play."
Absorbing the information, before shaking her head, "I'm not going to show my face there." Her tone carried a mix of defiance and vulnerability. "If they know enough, they will just stare at me, pitying the girl who never got to play the sport she wanted to."
Ikuto's expression softened, "It's okay, Emiko. We'll figure something out. What if we had a small meeting with the coach or captain to talk to them?"
Emiko felt a strain on her already worn-down nerves; his pushiness started grating on her. With a resigned sigh, "Fine. But not today."
A subtle smile danced on his lips, "I'll let them know I couldn't find you and suggest it might be too much, so a small meeting would be better."
"Good," She nodded and stood up from the comfy chair, "you should probably head to practice then."
Concern etched his features as he took in the dark bags under her eyes, "will you be okay getting home by yourself?"
"I'll be fine," She assured him.
Ikuto watched as Emiko gathered her bag and made her way towards the exit. Though his concern lingered, he respected her wish for space. He trailed along behind her out of the library before parting ways and heading to training to inform the captain that he couldn't locate Emiko. He suggested a more private meeting.
Meanwhile, Emiko dragged herself home. The exhaustion weighed her down, but she pressed on, determined to put distance between herself and the rugby team. That's what kept her pushing forward.
She couldn't shake off the weariness that clouded her thoughts as she walked along the familiar path. The day had taken a toll on her, not only physically but mentally, too. The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the school grounds.
When Emiko finally reached her apartment, after shutting the door behind her, she collapsed onto her bed, staring at the ceiling as her mind replayed the day's events. The thought of facing the rugby team, especially after the unexpected encounter with Ikuto in the library, left her feeling exposed and vulnerable; her circumstances were going to be laid out for all to see.
The prospect of facing the team's questions and stares weighed heavily on her mind. Yet, a small part of her yearned to step onto the field, to be a part of the sport she loved, even if only for a fleeting moment.
Chapter Text
A/n: Hey Readers, thank you for waiting! I'm not sure i got Yasunari right but i gave it a try! I hope as the year comes to an end, this chapter makes things a touch better. Until next time happy reading xxx
It had been another four full days that Emiko had managed to avoid the rugby team guys. She knew it was cowardly to hide from them when all they wanted to do was ask a bunch of personal questions, but the thought of having to face those answers was all too much. It would pull all her walls down and end in tears.
Sitting at a desk in the warm library, she heard the chair beside her softly sliding out before someone dropped themselves onto the cushion. Keeping her head down, the last thing she wanted to do was accidentally initiate a conversation with some random person.
"I should have realized this is where you'd be hiding out again."
The first year's head snapped up at the soft male voice, and she could only stare at the fourth year before offering him a tight smile. "Ikuto-san, how are you?"
"I'm alright, but you've been missed at practice." Leaning his head on his hand, he kept an eye on the raven-ette.
Scoffing, even though the thought of being missed made her feel warm. Shaking her head, she closed the book she'd been reading before quietly replying, "No one cares if I'm there or not."
Pressing his lips together, he countered, "That's not true; the whole team has been wondering where you've been. Natsusa has been deflecting a lot of their questions."
She brushed off his comment with a half-hearted shrug before getting to the point of him being there in the library when he should be at practice. Turning in her seat to face him, she said, "But that's not what you came here to discuss, is it?"
Lightly chuckling while running a hand through his soft blue hair, "no, not really." Dropping his hand before continuing, "I spoke with the captain and coach, and they have agreed to a small meeting."
Emiko pursed her lips. She hadn't expected them to agree. "When do they want to talk?"
"This afternoon after training, if possible," he watched, waiting for her reaction.
Quickly pulling out her phone and checking the time. Training had started not long ago. "Training started what, half an hour ago?" raising a questioning brow to the fourth year.
"Something like that," nodding his head. He had spent the last half hour trying to find the first year.
Quietly debating with herself if she should just rip the band-aid off and speak with them instead of putting it off. Rolling the idea around for another moment, she sighed and caved in, "Okay, I'll speak with them today after training."
His eyes widened in surprise as he sat up straight, not expecting her response, "okay, I'll let them know. We'll meet in the club's meeting room when practice finishes."
Nodding her head, she agreed, "see you then."
Her crimson orbs watched as the vice-captain stood and exited the library. Slowly turning around in her seat, she decided that if she was going to have to wait, she might as well study. Carefully opening the book she had been reading, she tried to focus on the words in front of her. Her mind had other plans, however, as the words merged together while she struggled to work out what she was even reading.
Closing the book, she stared at its cover, her mind catching up to what she had agreed to. She could have slapped herself, but she kept asking herself why she had agreed. Before her mind turned to what they would ask, did she even want to guess or, worse, answer the questions that were most likely coming?
Sinking lower in the chair, she cursed herself before spending the next hour and a half watching the clock before slowly rising from her seat and heading towards the rugby meeting room.
Emiko took her time heading there; she didn't want to run into any of the team members. Her eyes shifted about, making sure the area around the rugby clubhouse had no stragglers lurking around the closer she got.
Arriving, she noticed the sliding door was slightly ajar and was sure she could hear Natsusa's voice. Shaking her head, she thought, of course, he was going to be there; she wasn't even surprised anymore.
Carefully stepping up to the doorway, she cleared her throat, not knowing what else to do, as she let those in the room know she was there, "good evening."
The four men in the room turned, making Emiko feel tiny in their presence since they were all so much taller than her. Her eyes flickered between the vice-captain, captain, and a mild-aged man she assumed was the coach.
Ikuto was the first to break the silence, stepping forward to make the first year feel welcome, "Emiko, please come in and meet the coach and captain."
"I'm Coach Okama Kugumi, nice to meet you," his gravelly voice was low and full of authority.
Nodding her head with her lips pressed in a thin line at the middle-aged man who was well built for his age, "I've been told you wanted to speak with me?"
Crossing his arms over his chest, Coach Kugumi said, "And I've been told you were the reason the second-string team turned themselves around during their match against the first-string team."
Moving her hands into her hoody pocket so she could fiddle with her fingers, she shrugged. "I didn't actually do anything. The team did. I just told them what to adjust since I've been watching them practice since the start of the term, and they did it."
As he stood next to Ikuto, the purple-haired captain pointed out, "You quickly changed the game for the second half by pointing out the team's flaws."
Coach Kugumi rubbed a hand through the light stubble on his chin. He had heard about her past and was curious. Taking a moment before asking, "Is there anything you noticed about the A team?"
With another shrug of her shoulder, she didn't really understand where all the questions were leading. Twisting her fingers in her hoodie pocket, she calmly replied, "Yes, but they are mostly things ingrained in their playing style and would take a lot of time to train out of them."
The coach scrutinized her. He was glad her talent had been brought to his attention. He could only imagine how talented she would be if she had the chance before sighing, knowing the sports world could be unfair. Not beating around the bush, he announced, "We would like you to help the team."
Owlishly blinking, she had no idea what the point of the meeting was, so she hadn't expected the coach of all people to ask her for help with the team. Clearing her throat, she asked the only thing that popped into her mind, "Why? How?"
Even though she didn't look like much, the coach understood from what he'd been told that she knew her stuff. A smirk played on his lips as he thought of how powerful the team could be if this petite first year were helping him, "Having your help could make a difference to the team and how they play. And it's better than not having it at all."
Emiko stared at him, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "Why me? I've never played in official games. I can't be on the field. Why would you even want my help?"
"Because you see things others don't," Natsusa finally spoke, calm but firm. "You've always been good at reading players and the game. We'd be stronger with you on board."
Staring at the coach, she chewed her tongue between her molars before tentatively asking, "What would my role be, and how would I help the team?"
Rubbing his chin, thinking, the coach hesitated. He thought the role could be classified as an assistant coach or player support, even if that term didn't fit with what he wanted her to do with the team.
Unable to stand the quietness any longer, Natsusa blurted out, "You could join me as a manager."
Emiko made eye contact with the four males, and her jaw tightened as she firmly told them. "If I'm classified as a manager and everything that goes along with it, I won't be doing the job."
"What if you were an assistant trainer or a technical assistant?"
She hesitated, her resolve wavering. The title sounded better, but her frustration remained. "I will have to think about it and get back to you," she said, then left the room.
Once the raven-ette had left, the group kept talking. Natsusa abruptly spoke up about a thought that'd been floating around since he'd moved into the dorm, "If she becomes part of the team, she will struggle going back and forth since she lives away from school. It wouldn't be safe at night or very early when we train."
The other three stared at him before one asked, "Do you think it would help her decide if she were closer?"
"Yes, then it would be easier for us to keep an eye on her," Natsusa replied.
~~~
Emiko stepped out of the building and into the night air. It was refreshing after being in the clubhouse. Lost in her thoughts, she headed towards the school exit.
Her mental ramblings were halted as Yasunari's voice broke through. "Why does it look like you just walked out of an interrogation?" he said dryly, his blue eyes glinting with mild amusement.
Startled, she hadn't seen or expected him to hang around after practice. Staring at the redhead, she cautiously asked, "What are you doing here?"
His blue eyes stared in the direction she came. Noticing the clubhouse light still on, he replied as he leaned to one side while crossing his arms, "I could ask you the same thing."
A sigh escaped her while her hands stayed in the hoodie pocket so he wouldn't see her fiddling with her hands. "I came from a meeting with the rugby coach and captain."
His brow quirked, not expecting the remark, "I thought you would have been trying to find your brother."
"Nope. Not today," Emiko kept her answer short. Noticing the sky darkening, she turned, "I gotta get back to my place; it's getting late."
Yasunari hadn't spoken much to Emiko since Natsusa's accident in high school, so he didn't hesitate to offer, "I'll walk with you."
"I'm fine. You don't have to do that," shaking her head as she stepped away.
"And if I was walking in that direction?"
"Whatever, suit yourself if you want to walk in the same direction. You're the one who needs to walk back to here anyway." With a shrug, she turned and continued on her way. Yasunari fell in step beside her.
They hadn't gotten far when the fellow first-year asked, "So what was the meeting about? Someone finally recognizes your talent."
Scoffing at the comment, "I don't need your sarcasm right now."
They continued walking silently for a bit before he asked again, "So, what was the meeting about?"
Her bottom lip rolled between her teeth as she debated what to say. She let out a sigh and explained what the meeting was about and how the coach wanted her to help the team.
The redhead had listened to everything without interpreting. He'd known her for years and watched as she followed her brother and Natsusa around, trying to be part of a sport that, even though there was nothing she could do to be able to join it. It was pitiful.
"It's about time someone noticed. You've spent years being an unofficial shadow in the rugby world."
His indifferent tone stung as he spoke the truth, making her steps falter. Staring up at him, she bit back, "What's your point?"
Yasunari shrugged as he kept pace with her. "No point. It's funny how you can't seem to stay away from rugby, even though it pisses you off."
Emiko stopped in the middle of the footpath, her voice trembled with frustration as she snapped. "You don't get it, do you? You never have. I spent years on the sidelines watching guys who weren't half as good as me get to play just because they were guys. And now they want me to help them? It feels like a joke! Do you know how exhausting it is to fight for a chance when there won't be one?"
He turned to face her, his expression unreadable. "I don't need to get it, Emiko. I've watched you for years fighting. You now have a shot to be part of the sport you so badly wanted to be part of growing up. But, if you're too busy wallowing in self-pity to take it, that's on you."
Her breath caught in her throat as his words hit hard. "Why do you even care?"
"I don't," he said bluntly, though his voice softened a fraction. "But you're better than that. And you have a chance. You know deep down what your choice is."
Emiko stared at him, stunned. She wasn't sure what hurt more—his words or the fact that he might be right.
"I'll think about it," she muttered, brushing past him towards her apartment.
"Do that," he called after her, his tone laced with mock indifference. "See you at practice."
Turning back before getting to the door, she said, "thanks."
Swiftly unlocking the door, Emiko slipped inside, her thoughts racing. She had a decision to make.
Chapter Text
Note: Hey Readers! I hope you are all doing well and enjoyed this chapter. until next time happy reading xx
Emiko hadn't slept and was sure there were dark circles under her eyes to prove it. Her mind had been on a constant loop through last night's conversations. The reality of what her answer meant pressed into her chest.
What if this is my only chance?
With a low groan, she sat up and swung her legs over the edge of the bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Her apartment was quiet, and the silence wrapped around her like a familiar blanket. She picked up her phone, checking the time on the too-bright screen. She was awake before her alarm was set to go off.
Slowly padding barefoot across the cold tiled floor to her closet. Dropping herself to the floor and dug around for the small box she had brought with her to university. The old shoe box was worn in the corner and hadn't been opened in years. She wasn't even sure why she brought it with her, to be honest.
Gently lifting the lid off, she stared at the items inside. They were bits and pieces from a time when things were easier. Things like worn-in wrist tape, a cracked mouthguard case, and an old miniature rugby ball keychain. And at the bottom were a small handful of photos. She pulled the top one out, the edges soft and curled.
Four kids, covered in grass stains and sweat just after they had won their match. They were all so young in the photo, no more than eight years old. Their arms were thrown over each other's shoulders like they didn't have a care in the world. Ibuki was mid-laugh, already taller than the rest. Natsusa was throwing up a peace sign with one hand while Sei stood to the side with a slight smile on his lips. And Emiko was in the middle, her face flushed from running around, holding a ball under one arm like she belonged there.
Back when she still played with the boys. She could pass, tackle, and run faster than most of them. No one questioned it.
Then, as she turned ten, she was told she could no longer play with the boys. No longer belonged on the team.
Before she found out there was no girls' league. No alternative. After searching online and through every school flyer for something — anything — only to find that there wasn't a girls league. Not then. Not now.
That girl in the photo had lived for the game. She'd loved rugby with everything she had. And then, without warning, it had all been taken from her. As if she'd never earned it.
She had been allowed to continue practising with the boys' team out of pity for another year, but slowly, the team pushed her to the side. She was then only allowed to watch from the sidelines.
After that, she'd continued to train alone. Her brother and Natsusa tried to train with her when they had time, but even that came to an end.
Emiko's chest tightened as she bit her lip, and her eyes stung with unshed tears, the image blurring in her hand. With shaking hands, she gently placed the photo back in the box. Closed the lid. Then shoved it deep into the dark corner of the closet where it belonged.
She didn't want to cry about the past. She couldn't change it.
With a sigh, she pushed herself up to get ready. Not bothering with her shoulder-length locks, she pulled them into an easy ponytail. Getting dressed in silence, she pulled on her favourite pair of slim-fit jeans, along with a soft green t-shirt, before slipping on her favourite orange baggy hoodie and a pair of joggers. Grabbing her bag, she headed out the door to grab breakfast and coffee on the way to school.
Arriving at school, the usual background hum of whispers and curious stares returned the moment she entered the building.
Emiko did her best to ignore them all. Moving down the rows, she spotted Natsusa in his usual seat, waiting for class to start. Steeling herself, she slipped into the seat beside him without a word, like the week hadn't happened.
No flinch. No hesitation.
"Morning, Emi-chan," he said, voice casual.
The raven-ette offered him a small smile, "morning Natsu."
The whispers from the first-year rugby players rippled in the air as they watched her act as if nothing had happened, like she hadn't been avoiding them.
It wasn't until halfway through the lecture that she leaned forward and muttered under her breath to him, "I'll speak with the coach this afternoon."
He nodded once as his lips quirked up as if he'd been expecting her to say that all along.
The rest of the day crawled by at a snail's pace as classes blurred together. Her pen scratched notes she wouldn't later be able to read. Her fingers twitched as she tapped her pen against her notebook while she played out every outcome.
When the final class was over, and everyone started to head out, the ruby-eyed first-year stayed frozen in her seat.
Natsusa stood up beside her, waiting as she worked herself into a state of nervousness. Chuckling as he tugged her up by the elbow and reminded her, "You're going to speak to the coach, not being fed to wolves."
Emiko let herself be dragged from the room before pulling her arm out of his grasp. She pursed her lips; he was right; what was the worst that could happen. Emiko trailed along next to Natsua, staying silent as he chatted away about league information as they made their way to the rugby field.
The field stretched out before them as they arrived, although practice hadn't quite started yet, as the team was still getting ready and messing around.
"Emi-chan, you're going to be fine! Stop stressing. You'll get more wrinkles." Giving her a one-sided hug before pointing to the other side of the field, "Captain is over there. Go talk to him and coach."
"I don't have wrinkles, "glaring at his retreating figure while muttering as he left to get ready for his manager role.
Casting her eyes across to the far side of the field where Natsusa had pointed, she found the Gakuto and Ikuto speaking. Deciding to stick to the outside of the field, she kept her head down, ignoring the stares as she headed over to the duo.
When the Captain spotted her getting closer, his eyebrows lifted in surprise. Ikuto followed his gaze, and his expression softened, the hint of a smile warming his features.
"Hey," she greeted, voice tight from nerves as she stopped in front of them.
"We didn't expect to see you back so soon," the Captain admitted.
Ikuto stepped forward slightly. "Everything alright?"
She took a breath, trying to fill herself with courage as she tried to keep her voice even, "After thinking about the offer, I've got questions."
"That's understandable," the light-haired vice captain replied, keeping his tone gentle, seeing how nervous she was standing there. "Coach is still in his office. Now would be a good time to talk with him."
"I'll come with you," the Captain added, seeing her hesitation as she turned to stare across the field to the clubhouse.
Emiko fell in step beside the purple-haired Captain, easily using him as a shield to stop the stares. It didn't take long for the duo to end up in front of the coach's office. The door was left ajar, so the Captain stepped forward to knock and enter the room.
Coach Kugumi stood at the whiteboard, scribbling arrows and notes. When he looked up to see who had entered his office. He watched as Gakuto stepped to the side, revealing who he had brought along. The surprise flickered across his face when he spotted the petite, ruby-eyed first-year trying not to look nervous. He kept his voice calm as he simply stated, "your back."
The first year stepped inside the room and let the door close softly behind her. She stood straight and calm even though her hands were still buried in her hoodie pocket twisting. "I came to talk about the position. To understand what I'm agreeing to."
Capping the marker, he stepped back from the whiteboard and toward his desk, "That's good to hear; let's sit and talk." Noticing she hadn't moved, he tipped his head towards the empty chair, "it'll feel less like an interrogation this way."
Taking a seat across from the coach, she didn't like feeling small in conversations, and being the smallest in the room didn't help, but it would be something she'd have to get used to. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She took a moment to watch as the coach rested his elbows on his desk, his hands loosely clasped, waiting for her to start.
"I need to know what you're actually offering. This isn't a manager job, where I end up having to fold jerseys, tapping fingers and refill water bottles?" she asked in one breath.
Coach Kugumi took a sip of water as he let her take the lead in the conversation, wanting to know her voice would always be heard. His lips quirked in the corner, "I heard you loud and clear last time, you won't be a manager. We're not offering you a position to waste your brains on folding towels."
"Then what will I be doing?" she pressed.
"You would be working directly with me. Helping with reading play patterns, reviewing footage, and pointing out weaknesses. Things most of the boys either don't see or are too proud to admit. I want someone beside me who can read a field faster than most players can run across it."
She stared at him, wrapping her mind around what he wanted of her. It felt bigger than she expected—more real, more official. Her brows pulled together as she searched for the right words. Pursing her lips, "So… a tactical analyst?"
Coach Kugumi gave a short huff of amusement. "I want you to be more than that," he said, his gravelly voice low but steady. "A strategist, an analyst, someone who knows how to read a team better than they know themselves." He paused, "call it whatever you want. I want your perspective—uncut and unfiltered. That's what's valuable."
Tasking a moment to absorb the coach's explanation, she could tell he didn't pity her. This wasn't a pity offer. It was legit, but she was still cautious. Chewing her bottom lip, thinking of anything that could go wrong, "Will I be able to challenge things if I don't agree with you?" pausing for a second before adding. "If I see a better play, a better move?"
"I don't need a cheerleader. I want your honesty." Offering a slight shrug, "and if I disagree, we talk it out. If your call is better, we go with it."
She blinked, thrown by how easy he made it sound. How trusting. Still, there was another weight dragging behind her hesitation. Her voice dropped as she glanced toward the door as if the rest of the team might be listening from the other side. "And the team? You know they're going to question this. Me. Why I'm here."
"They can ask all the questions they want," he replied. "But when you're helping them win, when your calls are changing the game. They'll stop asking."
She stared down, twisting and fidgeting with her fingers in her hoodie pocket. That old fear—being seen and ignored at the same time, it clawed at her.
"I'm not here to babysit egos," she said sharply, "I'll call it like I see it—and if they can't handle that, that's their problem."
Coach nodded. "that's fine. They don't need to be coddled. They need someone who sees the field like you do. They'll either catch up, or they'll fall behind."
The room settled into silence again.
She met the coach's gaze, a tight knot in her chest loosening. After all the years spent invisible, someone finally saw the fire, the instinct, the game that had never left her, no matter how hard they tried to shut her out.
Standing up, he reached across the desk and held out his hand. "Will you be joining the team?"
Her ruby eyes stared at his outstretched hand for a moment as flashes surged through her mind. Her ten-year-old self, sitting on the sidelines, her cheeks red with embarrassment after being told, "It isn't her turn anymore." Watching those boys take the field, even the ones she could outrun in her sleep. Every closed door, every moment, she'd buried her love for the game under silence and survival.
And then—Natsusa, Ikuto, the Captain. This man was in front of her, holding out a chance.
The first real one.
She didn't hesitate as she slid her hand into his, and she said softly, "I'm in."
The coach shook her hand as he nodded, "Good. You'll start tomorrow morning. Be here fifteen minutes before practice starts."
Emiko jumped slightly when the Captain clapped her shoulder, having forgotten he was still there. "Welcome to the team."
Offering him a small smile, "thank you." Turning and gesturing to the door, "I'm gonna go now."
"Oh," Coach's voice stopped her just as she was stepping out of the room, gruff but thoughtful. "we'll talk later about your commute. Natsusa brought up the distance you live from campus."
She paused, stiffened a little at the unexpected concern, then nodded. "Okay."
As she stepped out of the office and into the fading afternoon light, Emiko was lighter than she had in a long time.
