the reserved kid during recess. never the type to join the commotion in the canteen because his mom made hearts in his omelet. you don’t really notice him, until you’re the only two left in the classroom, your parents running late due to the storm. you’re small, and the world is very frightening. suddenly he’ll plop a book in your lap, demanding you to read it to him. you do. and you’ll forget about the thunderstorm and the time as he holds your hand, the world kinder with him around.

you’re slightly older now. you saw high school musical and laid in bed thinking of the clubs you’ll join once you graduate elementary. you try out for the basketball team, and he’s one of the guys in line to shoot. you ask him what position he’s trying out for, he tells you ‘court jester’. neither of you make the team, but you spend most of your elementary laughing behind church pews and running around the gardens. he tells you he’s moving away after graduation, and for the first time you wrap your arms around a boy. when he meets your eye during the valedictorian’s speech, you wonder if that was love.

high school, finally! the regret of applying to (and enrolling in) a science high school hasn’t settled in yet, but it’s getting there. for introductions, your group is assigned to someone who used to be your current homeroom’s secretary. you soon find out that the position was a cruel joke, as his handwriting is near unintelligible. but he smiles when you introduce yourself and shows off his dimples. he accompanies you to basketball tryouts and tells you he’ll be captain soon. even when you sit on the stands, you believe him. though you’ve grown apart, the ties held together by a school-sanctioned activity untethered, you’re one of the loudest who cheer when he steps up to receive mvp.
