Work Text:

"One win, one wish."

Renjun should've known that accepting a challenge from Yangyang is as good as sealing his fate, especially when it involves playing games. It should've been obvious by the shit-eating grin Yangyang had on his face that he knows he has a 100% win rate.

Well, it's not that Renjun isn't aware of what's going on. It's just that Yangyang knows how to push his buttons and get him competitive - not that it's hard considering Renjun is, by default, competitive as fuck.

"It'll be fuuuuuun." Yangyang drags it out on purpose. "Come on, babe. Winner treats the loser to dinner, so you choose, I'll pay."

Yangyang's grin grows wider - if that's even possible - when Renjun's expression went from his "Oh, I don't know..." facade to a "You fucking piece of shit." look.

"Fine. Let's go. Start thinking where you wanna eat because I’m winning."

"Sure, sweetie."

It’s the end of the tenth round, and Yangyang not only wins ten times in a row but also he beats the highest score of the machine. His prize for each round? A kiss on the cheek from his boyfriend. Renjun feels all kinds of stupid.

He is literally putting all his effort in this damn basketball game that he's bad at and Yangyang is extremely good at (even while shouting all those lameass lines when he shoots the ball), yet he still hasn't won a round. By the fifth round, Yangyang offers that he will only play starting from the eighth round and Renjun's score will be the sum of the next five. Yangyang STILL wins.

(In Yangyang's defense, Renjun was the one who insisted on the game. The narrator does feel the need to point out, however, that Yangyang, again, riled his boyfriend up to make him choose basketball.)

“How could you be so bad at this?”

“Have you ever considered you’re just good at this?”

“Well, yes, I have, but you’re also bad at this. Look, that kid is doing better than you.”

If this was a sitcom, the camera would have immediately panned to show said kid playing basketball. She’s not a genius, but still doing way better than Renjun who has been aimlessly throwing the ball and hoping that some god would help him win against Yangyang somehow. The camera would then pan back to Renjun, who is making a face already. Yangyang laughs at his boyfriend and pulls him for a hug.

“One last round? Your score will be multiplied to ten.” Yangyang wonders if that’s enough. He decides to have faith in Renjun. “How does that sound?”

Extremely unfair , Renjun would’ve answered, and it hurts my pride. However, he DOES want to win, even if he has a ridiculous advantage, so he nods in agreement. Yangyang smiles and kisses Renjun’s growing pout before starting their last round.

This time, Renjun tries to not leave everything to the gods and shoots the ball with the determination to make it pass through the ring. Luck seems to have finally chosen his side and he manages to win. Yangyang seems happier with Renjun’s win than his ten consecutive wins, seeing how he was screaming in happiness and lifted him up to twirl him around like an idiot. They get weird looks from passersby but that’s fine. Yangyang puts him down and they step away to let someone else play.

“I can’t believe we spent over an hour playing that stupid game.”

“I offered, like, six times if you wanted to play something else.”

“I know, shut up. I just wanted to win against you in basketball for once.”

“Fairly? I love you, but in your dreams, sweetie.” Yangyang’s giggle gets louder when Renjun smacks his arm. “So, what’s your wish, winner?”

Renjun ponders over it. Honestly, it’s not like he has anything in mind. He really just wanted to win. Then, he remembers something that caught his attention earlier but knows Yangyang would definitely say no to. Perfect.

“Let’s go to the shop. I saw something there.”

The couple walked towards the souvenir shop. As soon as they enter, Renjun immediately dashes to the aisle where he remembers seeing the item, dragging Yangyang with him. When Yangyang finally realizes what Renjun was thinking of, he lets out a whine.

“Nooo, not those. They’re corny as hell.”

Renjun holds a shirt in each hand, one white and one black. Both have half of a heart and “his” written on top of the half-heart. If worn side by side, they form a full heart. In short, corny couple shirts that Yangyang hates. Couple and matchy shirts are fine, but he cringes at the ones with “corny as fuck” quotes and drawings.

“One wish, one win, as you said.”

“I fucking hate you.”

“No, you don’t.”

Yangyang grabs a hold of the black shirt, an evident pout on his lips.

“You’re paying for this. I’m not wasting money on something so stupid-looking.”

Renjun was going to point out Yangyang’s other shirts that he finds extremely stupid, but decided it’s not worth it. He pays for their shirts before heading towards the changing room. Yangyang just wears it over his sleeveless top, saying that he’s taking it off as soon as they’re done taking pictures.

They take a few selfies in different areas while wearing the couple shirts. Yangyang was about to take his off when Renjun stops him, pointing at a photo booth. Fine , is what Renjun understood from Yangyang’s expression so he drags him towards an empty one. Seeing Renjun all excited, choosing the filter and deciding how they’ll pose, Yangyang silently decides he’ll keep the shirt on.

“Ok, ok. It will take pictures soon.”

They take two rounds of photo-taking to have one strip for each of them. Yangyang has his arm around Renjun as they make weird faces for Renjun’s copy. For the last one, Renjun rests his head on Yangyang’s shoulder, Yangyang rests his head on Renjun’s head and they pretend to sleep. For Yangyang’s copy, he wants something different. The camera captures Renjun refusing to sit on his lap, Yangyang hugging Renjun around his waist, Renjun finally sitting on Yangyang’s lap, and Yangyang kissing Renjun on the lips. When they check their copies, they both seem satisfied with the pictures.

“Oh, we can save a digital copy. I want a copy of your pictures too. I’ll print them out as a polaroid.”

Renjun downloads the pictures on his phone before they walk away from the photo booth.

“Did you have fun, babe?”

“Yes, even if I lost to you ten times.” Yangyang laughs. “You’re not taking the shirt off?”

“Miss my guns already?” Yangyang earns a slap on the arm, again. “Nah, I’m keeping it. It’s going to get cold soon anyway. Plus, you seem happy with it. Won’t hurt to look cringey if it’s for you.”

The two of them cringe over Yangyang’s words, then laugh at their similar reactions. They decided to just walk around and enjoy the scenery that the fairground has to offer. There weren’t a lot of people considering it’s in the middle of the week. It was the perfect opportunity to enjoy the rare peace in a usually crowded place.

After a leisure stroll on the baywalk, they sit by the edge as the sun seems to set soon. Renjun rests his head on Yangyang’s shoulder and intertwines their fingers. It’s been awhile since he spent his day like this. Ever since they started working, Renjun has felt his days becoming more tiring. Yangyang notices his burnout and tells him to take a sick leave so they can go on a date.

(“I’m not sick though?”

“Yes, you are! Sick of work! I am too! Let’s go. I have something fun in mind.”)

This takes him back to their days in college, when they would drive to a fair after exams just to destress - minus the riding any of the rides since Renjun wasn’t feeling them today. Renjun lets out a relaxed sigh and Yangyang smiles to himself. Seems like his plan worked.

“Feeling better?”

“Super. Thank you, love.”

“Told you, I’m always here for you.”

Yangyang kisses the top of Renjun’s head. They watch the sky become painted in a beautiful color of orange, then slowly the sun is hidden from their sight. As they got up, Yangyang’s stomach grumbles and they both laugh at the sound.

“Aiya, time to eat. Have you decided on anything?” At the sight of Yangyang’s knowing smile, Renjun knows they’re thinking of the same restaurant that they used to frequent back in college and serves cheap but good hotpot  “The usual?”

“Yes please.”
