Work Text:
Midoriya Izuku hadn’t expected his seventeenth birthday to go quite like this.
After being woken quite unceremoniously by his All Might alarm clock, he’d received a text from his boyfriend, Shigaraki Tomura.
[Tomura] I’m sorry baby I’ve gotta work today, but I’ll try to call when I go on lunch, then see you later for dinner. Be good, bunny. Why don’t you drop by my house, too? I left my gift for you there.
While it was disappointing to know that he wouldn’t be getting to spend the day with Shigaraki as he’d hoped, Midoriya would do as he suggested and go pick up his present. Since Tomura basically lived alone he had a key to the house by now, and it wasn’t unusual for him to drop in and out as needed. With those thoughts in mind, he made himself some breakfast, showered, and headed for the train. His mother had already left for her job, but she’d promised to be home in time to make katsudon for dinner. She’d even ordered a mousse cake for them.
The house Shigaraki lived in wasn’t so far away from Midoriya’s own apartment, but it was far bigger and grander. Being in the neighborhood still felt a bit intimidating sometimes, even though it was relatively deserted on the balmy summer morning. As Midoriya headed up the drive, he noticed someone waiting there. Someone very tall, distinctly broad, and…
“All Might?” He nearly screeched.
The man, who’d been studying his phone and trying to use it with his comically large hands, turned to Midoriya. “Hello! You wouldn’t happen to know a lad by the name of Midoriya, would you? I was told to meet him here! You see, I’ve been charged with escorting him around town on his very special day!”
The closer Midoriya got, the more certain he was that this wasn’t the genuine article. This man, whoever he was, had gotten close to the real thing, but… he was a couple inches too short, not quite bulky enough, and his face had a certain static quality about it, as if it were latex makeup. Still… Just as he was about to answer, a text came through to his phone.
[Tomura] Enjoy your present, ‘Zu. See you for dinner. <3
He would have texted back something snarky, but he realized All Might was waiting for him! Even if this was just one of those rentable costume characters, whoever was in the suit must be sweltering. “Yes, I’m Midoriya. Please excuse me for keeping you waiting!”
“It wasn’t any trouble, young Midoriya! Now, what did you have planned for today?” He boomed. Somehow, whoever this was had the voice down perfectly.
“Well, I was gonna maybe go see the new All Might movie! And go to the hobby shop! And the beach park! But… if any of that makes you uncomfortable we don’t have to…” The thought of watching an All Might movie with actual All Might, even just a costumed character, was a bit too comical and bizarre to really consider. “Maybe instead of the movie, we should pick something else? Like the museum?” They did have a cool heroes exhibit he’d been meaning to check out.
“Nonsense, young Midoriya! I’d love to go see my new movie with my biggest fan!” His enthusiasm for the plan was shocking, but there had been rumors of All Might’s narcissism, so maybe it wasn’t that strange? Well, as long as “All Might” was fine with this.
“Well, great! Let’s head out, then?”
“Certainly! Let’s give you a great birthday, young Midoriya!”
He couldn’t say no to that!
The more time they spent together that day, the more disturbing this situation became. Although All Might was clearly not the genuine All Might, this one seemed so close it felt uncanny. Not only that, but he seemed to already know Midoriya!
It started as they went to the movies and he chose their seats. All Might correctly predicted that Midoriya would want to sit in the back and off to the side, Then, when they bought their snacks, he suggested that Midoriya might want the golden soy and caramel popcorn and a mineral water--exactly what Midoriya had been considering out of all the limited edition fare available. Even as they watched the film, Midoriya found that this All Might was extremely attentive to his needs, including passing him another napkin without him needing to ask. Then again, All Might had been the one to offer to hold the napkins.
After the film, which had been fun and enjoyable despite Shigaraki’s absence (and the fact that he hadn’t called), the pair headed off to the hobby shop so that Midoriya could purchase a new figure for his collection. He’d had his eye on the latest special edition figure for weeks , but his mom’s job didn’t pay enough and what little money his dad sent always went to the bills.
“So, got your eye on any one in particular, boy?” The All Might asked him with interest.
“Well,” Midoriya hummed softly. His eyes flicked just briefly to the one he really wanted before he indicated a much less expensive, but still special, model. Secretly, he already had two of that one: the regular and the chase variant.
“I see,” All Might answered, nodding as he picked up the box and headed to the cash register with Izuku. With a smile, he placed it on the counter.
“Hello, sirs, how may I help you?” The shopkeeper, a young man, asked them.
“We’d like to purchase your Plus Ultra Extra Limited All Might , please, and this figure, and…” The blond seemed to look around for a minute before his eyes lit on an extremely rare promotional poster that hadn’t even been for sale. “Are you willing to sell me that poster? It’s a bit of an odd request, I know, but I’m kind of a fan.” The All Might chuckled.
The shopkeeper had gone to retrieve the extremely rare figure, while Midoriya stood there with a look of shock on his face. When the shopkeeper returned, he looked hard at the poster. “Well, I suppose I could sell it to you for 5,000,000 yen. I’m sorry, but I’m afraid I can’t go any lower, as it’s such a rare item. I hope you understand.” He clearly expected All Might to turn him down. Midoriya did, too.
“That’s a fine price. I’ll take it!” All Might declared, leaving the shopkeeper just as shocked as Midoriya felt, though the young man didn’t seem to show it. “Now, how much will that be?” All Might asked. He already had a black card in his hand, leaving Midoriya even more confused. What person working as a rentable costumed character owned a black card?!
“Your total today is 5,300,000 yen, Sir.” The shopkeeper took the card with shaky hands and ran it through the machine. Somehow, as if by magic, it went through.
The man didn’t speak more as he handed over the receipt to be signed. After taking down the poster, he rolled it very carefully into a hard tube and bagged their other purchases.
“Here you are, Sir,” he said, handing All Might the large bag with his purchases. “Thank you very much.” All Might handed off the bag to Midoriya, who almost didn’t take it. When you watch your birthday gram drop the cost equivalent of a new car on merchandise, well… that wasn’t normal!
The act of generosity perturbed Midoriya so much that he stayed quiet all the way to the beach park. It should have disturbed him, too, that there was a blanket and chairs waiting for them at the equipment rental, already paid for. Maybe Tomura had pre-arranged it, but he’d have to ask him at dinner. Midoriya and All Might relaxed for a while, even though “All Might” had to pause now and again for photograph requests. Well, that was to be expected, and the kids getting all starry-eyed were really cute.
Once they’d relaxed in silence for a while without more interruptions, generally taking advantage of the nice weather and the gentle breeze, All Might broke the calm as his phone pinged.
“Well, young Midoriya, by the looks of it, my time here with you is almost up. Any last requests from my biggest fan? Did your birthday meet all your expectations?”
Midoriya smiled fondly and stared at his hands for a moment. “It was wonderful, honestly. The best birthday I’ve ever had! But… I guess I wish my boyfriend could’ve been here, too. It was great to spend the day with you, All Might, and I’m glad he hired you! But I did miss having him there.”
All Might didn’t answer at first. Midoriya looked over; the man seemed to have shut down for a moment.
“Well, I can’t possibly disappoint my biggest fan.”
Izuku stared, wide-eyed, as “All-Might’s” face and costume peeled away to reveal the one and only Shigaraki Tomura, in the flesh and nearly falling over himself to disentangle his body from the pile of fabric and rubber. Even if Midoriya had suspected something like this all along, having it confirmed still sent shockwaves through his system.
“Surprise! You didn’t think I would miss your birthday, did you baby?”
Rushing forward, Midoriya pressed his face into Tomura’s chest and tried not to cry too hard. Actually, he’d spent most of the morning worried about that very thing. How foolish of him to think he’d have to spend his birthday without his boyfriend, even if he did spend most of the day dressed as All Might!
Midoriya buried his face deeper into his boyfriend’s uniform. It wasn’t the most pleasant, with the old battle dust and debris still dirtying it, but the warmth and scent of Tomura did comfort him, and he could always wash the uniform on their next day off. “I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, Tomura… before you, I barely even had a birthday, and this year you aren’t at school anymore, so…”
Tomura tutted him very gently, and pulled his face back to wipe a few tears from his eyes. “We could be worlds apart, ‘Zu, and I would never miss today. You’re my Player 2, my right hand, and my favorite little bunny.” He booped Midoriya lightly on the nose. “I really did have to work, but I reminded Toga that it was your birthday and she agreed to fill in for me. Hopefully the boss doesn’t find out,” he added with a chuckle.
He was about to say more, but Midoriya cut him off by kissing him deeply and digging his fingers into Shigaraki’s hair. Even without a quirk, Midoriya always shocked Tomura with how strong he really was; at the moment he clung to Tomura like a koala. “You’re the most wonderful boyfriend ever, Tomura,” he breathed, “and the most infuriating. Thank you so much for doing this. I know you don’t even really like All Might all that much. Why’d you go to the trouble?”
Shigaraki chuckled and hefted him up a bit more to properly hold Midoriya in his arms. “Well, you remember that ‘All Might Experience’ that’s going on down in Shinjuku? I tried to get you tickets, but they were completely booked out. This seemed like the next best thing.” He gestured to the costume.
“And just where did you get--” Tomura cut him off with a finger to his lips. “Shh, little bunny. I’ve got cosplay connections.”
Midoriya burst out laughing. “You would. Come on, you should come home with me for dinner. Mom’s making katsudon and she bought a fancy mousse cake for dessert.”
“Oh, yeah? What if I’d rather have something else for dinner?” Tomura asked with a quirk of his brow. He pulled away briefly to somehow contain the All Might costume into a storage capsule.
“If you make me miss my birthday katsudon, I’ll put you in the doghouse for a month,” Midoriya lightly protested as Tomura used his support pack to fly them off towards home.
Tomura laughed. “Alright, alright, fine. Guess I’ll just have to have two desserts, then.”
“You are not bringing whipped cream into bed again, Mister.”
“That was one time ! And I cleaned it up! I just spent all day wearing a gross All Might suit for you, I even ate my vegetables! How can you be so mean, ‘Zu?”
Midoriya smirked. “Liar.”
“But it’s true!”
Midoriya pressed his lips to Shigaraki’s ear. “You haven’t had your broccoli yet.”
The gloved hands holding him squeezed harder for a moment, before Tomura suddenly had his teeth on Midoriya’s neck and pretended to bite him.
“I yield, I yield!” Midoriya screeched, laughing at his boyfriend’s playfulness but still a bit scared of falling.
Tomura smirked triumphantly. “I hope you always will, ‘Zu.”
“We’ll see about that,” Midoriya teased. “Tomura?”
“Yeah, sunshine?”
“Where’d you learn how to imitate All Might’s voice so well?”
Tomura looked momentarily haunted. “We’re not gonna talk about that, okay?”
“Okay.” Izuku snuggled into his boyfriend’s chest. The dirt wasn’t bothering him anymore, but he’d still make Tomura take a shower. Tonight was going to be perfect.
