Work Text:
“They really went all out on this.” Yuyuko took a sip of her water. She gave a small smile when she saw Shiori and Rui on the dance floor, looking at each other as if they were the only two people in the world.
“It’s their wedding, Yuyuko. What did you expect?” Her roommate gave a small chuckle.
“I didn’t think they’d stick with the whole…” Yuyuko made a vague gesture to the marble pillars and silk garland that made up the reception. “Olympus theme.”
“Neither did I. They pulled it off, but I’m not sure I could do something like that.”
“Maybe it’s because we’re both kind of like hermits.”
“You’re a hermit that works that sleeps all day and works on scripts all night. I have to drag you out of the apartment most of the time.”
“As if you don’t work every hour of the day, Yumeoji ‘Let me run through this one part again’ Fumi.”
“We’re getting off-track.” Fumi deflected with the tone that let Yuyuko know that Fumi didn’t have a proper response to that. “Let them have this. If nothing else, it is a pretty reception.”
“True,” Yuyuko conceded. “At least they went with Hades and Persephone and not Zeus and Hera or something.”
“Kaoruko tried suggested that.” Fumi rolled her eyes. “Needless to say I shut it down immediately.”
“There’s the Fumi we all know and love.” Yuyuko laughed.
“I regret inviting you as my plus one.” Fumi sighed.
“I still don’t know why you were so insistent on that.” Yuyuko raised a brow. “Does it really matter that much for you to look like you've taken?”
“You try having a younger sister who’s getting married while the last time you had a girlfriend was in college,” Fumi grumbled, taking a swig of her drink. Logically, she knew that Shiori wouldn’t look down on her or be disappointed that she was still single, but when she asked if Fumi had a plus one, her old instincts kicked in, and she lied through her teeth. Shiori was so excited for her, even more so when she told her it was Yuyuko.
“Not to mention the fact that your two exes got together.”
“Ichie loves to remind me of that fact daily. She’s still the bane of my existence.”
“Good thing Tamao’s there to temper her, huh?” Yuyuko took a quick peek to the other side of the venue, seeing Ichie and Tamao talk quietly to each other as they were getting more food. “In any case, why me?”
“Convenience, mostly. We are roommates after all.” Fumi shrugged. “Plus, I didn’t have many other options, and I was panicking.”
“How romantic.” Yuyuko drawled. “What would you have done if I said no?”
“Either found someone else or gone alone. I doubted you would have, though. That’d break the… what did you call it again?”
“The Raku-Code?” Yuyuko giggled.
“Yeah, that.” Fumi snorted. “Which still makes no sense, by the way, since I’m not even a rakugoka.”
“Us rakugo fans are a rare breed, you know. Gotta stick together.” Yuyuko nudged Fumi with her elbow.
“I suppose so.” Fumi rolled her eyes, smiling. She glanced back to Shiori and Rui, who slowed down as the song came to a close. Rui’s cousin, who was in charge of the music, played a new song.
“The couples dance is coming up,” Yuyuko commented, watching the various couples walk up to the dance floor. She blinked, seeing Lalafin tugging Akira out of her seat. “Huh.”
Fumi followed Yuyuko’s line of sight. “Yeah, I was surprised too.”
“Are we going to join them?”
“I didn’t think you’d want to.”
“Well, it’d look suspicious if we didn’t,” Yuyuko stood, holding her hand out for Fumi. “May I have this dance?”
“That’s supposed to be my line.” Fumi took it, smiling. “Are you leading then?”
“I had to wake up early to calm Rui down and help her get over her cold feet, then help keep everything else running smoothly.” Yuyuko gave Fumi a deadpan glance. “Hell no.”
Fumi raised a brow, leading Yuyuko to the dance floor, and started to lead. “You know I did the same thing with Shiori too, right?”
“You also regularly wake up at six in the morning, whereas I, a nocturnal creature, goes to sleep at six in the morning.” Yuyuko returned, stumbled a little.
“I don’t wake up that early,” Fumi said defensively, instinctively supporting Yuyuko. The shorter girl gave a mix of a thankful and disbelieving glance. “Okay, sometimes, but you get something to eat once you wake up, so I don’t think you should be complaining.”
Yuyuko laughed. "Thanks for sparing me the fate of daily instant ramen.”
Fumi took a glance at the other couples, before pulling Yuyuko in a bit closer. “No problem."
Yuyuko flushed. Fumi found it a lot cuter than she expected to.
The last time the two had danced like this was not too long ago when Fumi needed a dance partner to practice with for her role in the local theater’s play. Yuyuko had offered, and it was similar to how they were dancing now, slow and in sync. Though, as fun as the dancing was, Fumi enjoyed the breakdown of the practice and the banter that came with it much more.
“How long are we going to stay, by the way?” Yuyuko suppressed a yawn, burying her face in Fumi’s neck. “Been an eventful day, and the sleepiness is finally kicking in.”
“I can tell the others know we’re planning to leave early.” Fumi turned pink, thankful that Yuyuko couldn’t see her face right now. “As for the whole… fake dating thing? Not too sure.”
Yuyuko hummed. “Alright, good to know. Are we done dancing yet?”
“Almost. Would you mind one more dance?”
“Not at all.”
