Destiny

Summary:

Sometimes, life doesn't go as planned. But that makes life just more beautiful.

Notes:

This week was kind of turbulent for me so I hadn't much time to write this fic and it's un-beta'd. I hope it doesn't show too much 😖

This is a gift for my dear friend @PhoenixDowner. She wrote so many amazing fics for me already and I don't even come close to giving back all of that sweetness to her.
This fic was inspired by a YouTube Short of the Beeston Fam and when I saw it, I immediately thought of Sokai and Phoenix's Sokai kiddo Miyu. However, I added my own AU twist to the Sokai family and I hope this is okay. Thank you for being a wonderful friend ❤

Please enjoy!

Work Text:

Sometimes, life doesn’t go as planned.

If somebody had asked Kairi a year ago what she would be doing right now, her answer would be clear: Work hard and save munny fighting heartless. For years, the two of them dreamed of leaving the fighting behind them, for the most part at least. They both knew Sora loved his adventures abroad and both wouldn’t leave the world to fend for its own if it needed saving, but for the most time, they had decided to retire and that retirement plan included running their own little family owned café. Both loved baking and both loved meeting friends and family, so they decided to take the plunge and turn their hobby into their profession.

But first, they needed a place and everything to furnish it, and that meant they needed a lot of munny. Fighting heartless was the easiest way, so both continued doing it, taking missions together or separately until they were able to buy a nice piece of land on Destiny Islands as well as being able to fund a cozy three story house on said land. The first floor was planned to be their café including an outside patio while the other two floors were meant to be their family home. Two years, they said. Two more years of mercenary work and they would have finished all construction work and be able to open their café.

They had finished the kitchen, bathroom and master bedroom of their house when something threw a wrench into their plans. And that little wrench was scrunching up her nose and sleepily opening her bright blue eyes that showed a hint of violet developing deep inside of them, as she searched the dim room for a familiar face.

“Hey there, sweetie!” Kairi cooed and smiled as she reached into the crib and caressed the chubby cheek of her three-months-old daughter who had just woken up from her nap. Immediately, the baby brightened up, kicking her little legs around in her sleeping bag as Kairi lifted her into her arms to rock her gently back and forth.
“Good morning, little Miyu! How are you?”

Finding out that Kairi was pregnant was a little shock to the couple, to say the least. They had just celebrated their first anniversary as a married couple and moved out of their two-bedroom apartment into their work-in-progress house when the news hit them. Not that they were bad news - there was no doubt in Sora’s or Kairi’s mind that the baby was very much loved and wanted, they just hadn’t planned for a baby quite yet. Since Kairi was in no condition to fight anymore and having a baby was quite costly, the two of them had to put their dream on hold for a little while. For Sora, that meant going on solo missions and taking on extra missions whenever possible. For Kairi, it meant first and foremost keeping their baby safe in her belly, but she still wouldn’t shy away from helping their friends and hired workers around the house with any task she could. Before their daughter was born, their living room took shape, including a little nook for a small dining table (the dining room was still a work-in-progress) and one of the former meant-to-be guest rooms turned into a beautiful nursery, the very one Kairi had just picked up her daughter inside of.

Now that little Miyu was born, Kairi still wouldn’t fight. Of course, she and Sora had talked about how to proceed from now on, but as Kairi was still nursing, they agreed on Sora being the sole breadwinner for another while while Kairi looked after Miyu.

Today was no exception, so Kairi patiently nursed her hungry daughter while waiting for her husband to return from today’s mission. It didn’t take long after Miyu had been properly burped and hung onto Kairi’s shoulder for a while to cuddle before Kairi heard the telltale sign of a running engine in the distance.

“Daddy’s come back from work!” Kairi announced to her daughter and got up slowly, carefully maneuvering the baby around as she walked to their little balcony. From there, they had a wonderful view of the land they owned, part of it planned to be their future garden full of flowers and with enough space for Miyu to run around and play, and another part of it was paved to serve as their gummi ship parking spot. And that was exactly what both Kairi and Miyu saw: A gummi ship roared and slowly descended onto its designated spot. When a messy head of hair became visible, Miyu started squealing and kicking her tiny legs in excitement.

“Miiiiyuuuu!”

Kairi smiled. Of course. Sora would always sense his daughter watching him. He jumped about and waved both of his arms at his daughter, then he took off as fast as his legs were carrying him to run towards them.

“Slow down!” Kairi called after him with a giggle, but Sora had already run past the balcony toward the front side of the house so she had no choice but to rush back inside and towards the front door. She barely made it when she saw Sora already climbing the stairs that led straight to the high terrace in front of their door, Keyblade still in hand and held over his back. He only slid to a stop right in front of his two favorite girls and his face broke out into one of his famous grins.

“Hey there sunshine!” He greeted his daughter with a kiss to her cheek and Miyu hid her smile behind her little fists. Sora’s grin softened as he turned his attention to his wife and as it had become customary for them, he greeted her with “I’m back.”
“You’re home,” she dutifully answered, her own smile spreading over her face as Sora leaned down to kiss her. Both got a little lost in their kiss, as usual, and Sora let his arm relax and brought it back down to his side when he felt a tiny hand reach for his arm.

“Woah!” He exclaimed as he pulled back from Kairi and finally dismissed his Keyblade, to Miyu’s disappointment. “You’re a little too young to have a Keyblade inheritance ceremony performed on you! But-” Sora added and reached into his jacket from where he produced a tiny, Keyblade-shaped wand, “Uncle Donald made this for you! Your own little Keyblade! Try it out!”

Without hesitation, Miyu’s hand curled around the small Kingdom Key and waved it around with all the vigor a three-months-old can muster. Sora’s eyes sparkled as Miyu thrashed around and squealed happily and that made Kairi’s stomach flutter.

No, sometimes, life doesn't go as planned. But that makes life just more beautiful.
