Chapter 1: Looking For Your Soulmate

Chapter Text

You stared quietly at the small finger of your left hand, a small piece of string tied just below the middle knuckle on it. It was something only you could see… well that wasn’t quite true. There was one other who could, but you had yet to find them. That’s why you were currently traveling, following the path of your string of fate. It wasn’t a prominent or direct line, but rather one that would appear and disappear at random. If you were making your way towards the holder of the other end, nothing really happened. If you began to head in the wrong direction, further away, it would feel like a slight tug on your finger.

It’s not like you had a choice when you were going further away. Life wasn’t fair enough to let you drop everything and go look for this person. It also didn’t drop you off right next door to them, either, so fate could be as mad as she wanted. It’s *her* fault for not putting you two closer together.

Your thoughts wandered as you noticed the string appear and disappear once in a while, deciding to use your phone to distract yourself. You had saved up to be able to make this trip so that you could finally see this so-called soul mate. Hopefully it was worth it.

-

Once you arrived, you grabbed your bag and headed off the platform. You had a feeling that in this city, at long last, you would be face to face with this person. You headed out into the streets, wandering aimlessly as you tried to navigate with quite possibly the most useless tour guide imaginable.

After a long day of trying to search, you couldn’t help the groan of discomfort that you let out. Your feet ached. It seemed like whenever you were close to the right path, this person started bolting the opposite direction.

Perhaps they were avoiding you? Maybe they wanted the exact opposite of you? You couldn’t quite wrap your head around it, but silently hoped that maybe whatever their job was had them ignoring the tugging as they strayed further from you. You stretched your arms over your head as you decided to take a break from searching. Surely if you couldn’t meet up with them in a week, this town wasn’t your final destination.

“I should probably eat,” you whined softly to yourself, suddenly feeling the pain of an empty stomach. You had munched on the snacks you brought along, but that was definitely not a replacement for actual food. You glanced around to find the nearest restaurant, already hoping that a hotel wouldn’t be much further beyond that.

After securing a place to eat, you allowed yourself to relax and completely immerse yourself in your meal. Fate or love or whatever you wanted to call it could wait a while, what truly mattered in this moment was the delicious food in front of you.

-

Now, with a full belly, your next task was simple. Locate a hotel. While it may have been a simple task at hand, that did not guarantee it was easy to find. You were desperately trying to follow the map the couple gave you at the restaurant, but it just made you hopelessly lost, confused, and mildly agitated.

You balled the map up angrily before shoving it into the nearest waste bin, huffing to yourself over how useless it had been.

“You look lost, need some help?”

The sound of another person’s voice broke your angry thoughts, blinking to look up at them. Before you reached their form, your eyes widened. The string on your pinky was completely visible with a very prominent line heading towards the person standing about ten feet away. You quickly met their gaze, their eyes just as wide as yours.

“You're…” you began.

“My soulmate.” They finished.
