Work Text:
Stiles placed the rather expensive cake on the small table in the makeshift dining room of his apartment before grabbing the even more expensive bottle of white wine he knew Derek favored as well as two glasses from a cupboard. He and Lydia had been planning this night since the very moment they broke up. He and Lydia had been acting like they hate each other for the past three weeks just for this occasion.
When the two broke up it had been completely mutual, not that anyone but them knows that of course. Their relationship had simply run its course, the romantic version of it anyway. It also didn’t help that they both had unresolved feelings for other people while with each other (Lydia for Parrish and Stiles for Derek).
After their breakup, he and Lydia started scheming ways to help each other obtain the true objects of their affection. Stiles was adamant that Derek didn’t feel the way he did and, while Lydia said otherwise, she also said she didn’t think Derek would ever act on whatever feelings he may or may not have. So then the grand plan to trick Derek into a date was formed and a lot of money had been spent on Stiles’ part. It was totally worth it though, even if it didn’t result in a budding relationship between him and Derek, because he could indulge in whatever was left of the cake and wine to drown his sorrows.
A knock came on the apartment door and Stiles quickly checked his fancy yet not too fancy clothes before going to open the door. When the door opened it revealed Derek who looked like he wanted to be absolutely anywhere else but at Stiles’ apartment. Stiles stepped aside to let the Sourwolf in before closing the door behind him.
“So why did you want me to come over?” Derek asked, making his way over to the living room while Stiles made his way to the kitchen to grab a couple of plates for the cake and a knife to cut it with.
“Well, you know how Lydia basically hates me now since we broke up?” Stiles asks.
Derek lets out a huff, having heard almost all of the pair’s arguments since. Stiles almost feels bad for purposely having said fights in front of him. “Yeah.”
“Well, a little while ago she stopped by and dropped off a cake and a bottle of wine,” Stiles told him. “She said it was a peace offering or something. But we both know Lydia; she doesn’t drop a grudge that easily. So, I called you to make sure that she’s not trying to poison me with delicious food.”
“Why do I have to be the person to taste the food?” Derek asked.
“Because, my dear Sourwolf, if the food is poisoned your werewolf healing factor will keep you from dying while also alerting me as to whether or not Lydia is planning my untimely demise.” Stiles walked to the dining room and Derek reluctantly followed. “Plus, the wine she brought just so happens to be the only kind of wine I have ever seen you actually enjoy.”
Stiles made his way to the dining room and Derek reluctantly followed behind him. They both sat across from each other and Stiles quickly cut the cake before putting a slice on a plate and sliding it over to Derek.
“Go on, taste it,” Stiles said, and the werewolf raised an eyebrow. “What, would you rather your emissary be poisoned by a vengeful banshee?”
“I guess not,” Derek said, picking up a fork and ignoring the offended squawk Stiles made. He dug the fork into the cake before taking a bite and almost moaning at the taste, the smug look on the other man’s face not even registering. “Oh my god,” Derek muttered. “I, uh, I think it’s fine,” the Beta said before shoving more of the cake into his mouth not noticing Stiles pouring wine into a glass.
“You should try a sip of the wine too,” Stiles said, sliding the glass over as well. “Just to be safe.” Derek obliged, still not noticing when Stiles cut a slice for himself as well as poured his own glass of wine.
It wasn’t till the bottle of wine was empty and the cake was almost gone that Derek realized that this was actually a date. This thought was only sealed when Stiles kissed him on the cheek with a small smirk as he was leaving.
A second date was planned a few days later.
