Work Text:

It started with a simple, almost innocent, question.

"Can we get a pet?" Harley asked as she and Pamela got into a new stolen car, the third one they had gotten in the last two weeks.

Commissioner Gordon and his goons had been following their steps for almost a month now, and lately it seemed like they were getting closer to arrest them. That man really needed a new hobby because chasing Harley and Pamela across the country truly wasn't it.

"A pet? Babe, we haven't been living in the same place for more than three days in weeks. Do you honestly think that getting a pet is the best idea in our current situation?" Pamela replied as she started driving through the streets of Salt Lake City, Utah, their new temporary hometown until Gordon caught up with them and forced them to move to a new city again.

"But, Pammie, a pet would be the perfect companion on our road trip!" Harley pointed out excitedly, and the redhead looked at her with an incredulous look.

"Harls, we're on the run because the entire Gotham Police Department is trying to take us back to Arkham, not on a road trip," Pamela said with a groan as she started driving to the motel they were staying at, and she could see from the corner of her eye a pout forming on the blonde's lips, her arms crossing over her chest.

She looked like a child throwing a tantrum and the oldest girl had to bite the inside of her lip to stop herself from smiling at the adorable sight. Harley couldn't think that she had won this argument. It was irresponsible to get a pet that would virtually live in a car for who knows how long, so she wasn't going to let her girlfriend change her mind. End of discussion.

Harley brought up the subject once again three weeks later after they had settled in their new home situated a couple of hours away from Seattle. They tricked Gordon into thinking they had crossed the Canadian border and were on their way to Alaska, so if they were lucky, the Commissioner and his useless team wouldn't be bothering them any longer.

The house was decently sized, but what Pamela had liked the most was its big backyard that she was already filling with all types of plant life from the area, green surrounding the property and hiding it from the rest of the world.

But the downside of having such a spacious place? Apparently it was perfect for a pet.

"Pammie, please," the blonde pretty much begged, her big and shiny blue eyes looking up at Pamela as her lips once again formed their signature pout. "We have this huge patio and a puppy would live such a happy life here. Can we get a pet?" Harley tried one more time.

Pamela's sigh sounded defeated, and by the look of Harley's bright smile, she knew she had won.

"Fine. But if it eats my plants, I'm feeding it to Frank," the redhead warned, but Harley wasn't even paying attention anymore, too preoccupied with throwing her arms around Pamela's neck and peppering her face with kisses.

"You're the best, Red!" Harley exclaimed excitedly before kissing her girlfriend. "I'm driving us there right now," she declared after breaking apart from their kiss.

Before Pamela even knew what was going on, they were already on their way to the only animal shelter near town, about an hour away from home, and during the whole ride there, the redhead could only think one thing over and over again: this a terrible idea.

How they ended up with a pet hyena named Bruce in their backyard, Pamela would never know, but at least she knew how they were going to get rid of Gordon and his men if they ever found them.

And most importantly; the smile on Harley's face whenever she saw their so-called son? Absolutely priceless.

This girl was going to be the death of her, but at least it would be a happy death.
