Chapter Text
Maya looked at her Apple Watch and saw it was nearing midnight. She yawned and closed her laptop. Inventory reports will just have to wait. The fire captain grabbed her phone from the desk and made her way into the captain’s bunk. She pulled up Carina’s contact and put the phone to her ear, sitting down to take her shoes off as well.
The phone rang and rang but no answer. Voicemail.
“Hey. Just wanted to call you before I turned in for the night. You’re probably asleep right now. Anyways… Call me in the morning. I love you.”
She ended the call and tossed her phone on the desk. Her eyes fell on a picture pinned to the bulletin board. It was a photo of the couple celebrating their first Christmas together as wives. Carina was baking Italian cookies and had managed to get flour all over herself and Maya. Katherine was fortunate enough to catch the moment on camera. She smiled at the memory and laid her head on the pillow.
After all, she’s learned how to rest now.
Engine 19, Ladder 19, Aid Car 19, 15000 Centennial Drive. Structure fire. The klaxons rang out.
Maya jumped from her bunk, slipped her shoes on, and ran towards the barn, the rest of the team joining her.
“Nothing like a 3 a.m. structure fire to wake you up in the morning.” Vic joked as she put her turnouts on and climbed into the engine.
“Yeah, I could think of a few better ways to wake up.” Gibson replied, jumping into the seat next to her.
“Centennial Drive. Wait, isn’t that-.” Vic began.
“Grey-Sloan.” Maya and Ben replied, looking at each other. The fire captain sighed and scanned her iPad for information about the call. She prayed to whatever higher power that her wife was safe, thoughts of the morning before still in her mind.
“Merda.” Carina cursed. She shot up from the bed and began rummaging through the closet. “Maya get up.”
A groan.
“Maya, wake up. We’re going to be late.” The brunette repeated. She found a shirt and put it on herself before throwing another in her wife’s direction.
“What the hell.” A groggy voice said. “What time is it?”
“6:45.”
“Oh my God, we’re gonna be late.” Maya exclaimed, hurrying to change her clothes. Carina gave her a knowing look as she watched the blonde scurry around their bedroom.
“We wouldn’t be late if you hadn’t got in the shower with me last night.” The doctor mentioned, now washing her face.
“How can I say no to a steamy shower with my sexy wife?” Maya countered, wrapping her arms around Carina from behind. “But we don’t have to shower this morning, so it’s a win-win.”
The couple rushed through their morning routine, hurried out the door and into Carina’s car, the brunette driving.
“Busy day?” Maya asks as she sips on her protein drink.
“Not really. I have a mamma pregnant with twins who has been on observation for the past week. If she doesn’t show signs of labor by this evening, we’ll have to induce. She’ll probably end up having a c-section tonight. I am surprised she’s made it this long. Usually twins come early.”
Maya just nodded, enjoying listening to Carina talk about her day.
“What about you?” The doctor asked.
“Monthly inventory reports. I might surprise the team with some PT and drills today.”
“Don’t torture them. They come to me when you do.”
“What?!” Maya asked, curious but also in disbelief.
“Yeah, Travis says I need to ‘loosen you up’ after you make them do drills.”
“Double for Montgomery then.”
“Maya…” Carina warned.
“Have a good shift.” The blonde said lightheartedly, seeing as they had pulled up to the station.
“Be safe bambina. I love you.” Carina punctuated with a sweet kiss.
“I love you too.”
As 19 approached the scene, they could see the orange glow in the sky. The fire captain was the first to jump out of the engine. Perching her orange helmet on top of her head, Maya looked around to absorb her surroundings.
Smoke was billowing out of the south side of the hospital. Doctors, nurses, and patients were being escorted out of the hospital doors. Triage areas were set up as well as a tent for missing family members. Organized chaos, she liked to call it.
“Chief McAllister.” Maya greeted, seeing the white haired man approaching her.
“Captain Bishop, glad you’re here. 19 will be on triage. The fire has not been contained but is primarily on the southeast side. There was a minor explosion in the ICU as well. Electrical has been turned off and search and rescue is almost complete.” He explained. Maya nodded her thanks and walked over to her team.
“Alright 19, we’re on triage. Miller and Montgomery, stay with the aid car but help where you can.” The fire captain shouted. Her next move was to see if her wife was near. Maya's eyes scanned every triage area but could not find the brunette doctor anywhere.
“Warren, have you seen Miranda?” She radioed.
“Affirmative Cap. She’s speaking with law enforcement.” He replied. Maya’s head whipped around in search for the woman in question. She spotted her donned in a white lab coat, talking to a police officer.
“Miranda, are you okay?” She asked.
“My hospital is up in flames. Does it look like I’m okay?” The woman deadpanned. The blonde chuckled.
“Not really. But have you seen Carina?” She asked. Dr. Bailey gave her a sympathetic look.
“I haven’t, no. Dr. Shepherd is helping in triage area 4. Check with her.”
The fire captain gave her thanks and immediately ran off to find the neurosurgeon, bumping into Teddy along the way.
“Teddy, have you seen Carina?”
“No. We had a late lunch together around three. She said she would probably be in surgery tonight.” Dr. Altman replied. Maya sighed, remembering what Carina had told her that morning. “I’ll keep an eye out for her. Get back with 19.”
“Right. Thanks.” She said and walked back towards her team. Andy noticed the solemn look on her best friend’s face.
“Cap, what’s wrong?”
“I can’t find Carina. The other doctors haven’t seen her either.”
“She’s probably helping triage somewhere. I’m sure she’s fine.” The lieutenant reassured. Maya only nodded, thinking of how Carina loved helping others.
She looked around and trained her eyes on the hospital entrance. Firefighters were trickling out. Most patients had been escorted out by now. She was about to check up on her team and triage victims when she noticed a nurse walking out of a side door. She ran towards the woman who was in light green scrubs and also carrying a baby in her arms.
“Dr.” She paused, coughing. “Dr. DeLuca. She was behind me on our way out. I thought she-.”
“Excuse me ma’am, did you just say Dr. DeLuca?” Maya intervened.
“Yes. Are you her wife? She mentioned her wife is a firefighter.”
“I am. Can you tell me the last place you saw her?”
