Chapter 1: Prologue: Who is She?

Chapter Text

"Noooo!" Thor screamed when Loki released the staff.

As he fell into the collapsing wormhole, Loki rotated his body to face whatever threat waited for him on the other side.

With only a commanding thought, his daggers materialized in his hands. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath to calm his mind, getting ready to fight for his life. The vision of a girl with chestnut brown hair grinning at him flashed across his mind. He had no idea who she was, for he had never met anyone like her, but she occasionally haunted his mind. When Loki opened his eyes, the normal colorful lights of the Bifrost morphed into pale blue and white hues.

Loki tightened his grip on the daggers, 'Is this some kind of trick?'

As soon as he finished that thought, Snow-covered ground appeared in front of him, leaving no room to prepare for a landing, and he fell hard onto the ground. A gasp escaped his lips when he felt the cold steel from one of his precious daggers bury itself into his abdomen. On instinct, he dematerialized them only to regret it seconds later when blood from his new wound started to soak his outfit.

"Shit!" He hissed through clenched teeth as the icy-hot pain spread its way across his senses.

He looked around, but because of the snowstorm that raged around him, he could only see a few feet in each direction. Most people would freeze to death in such conditions, but the cold had never bothered him, and now he knew why. He staggered to his feet, knowing he needed to find shelter and figure out a way to heal himself.

Loki marched through the desolate, snowy wasteland for what seemed like an eternity, all while growing weaker from blood loss. His breathing became more labored and his vision started to blur in and out of focus. Just when he felt that he was going to collapse, the storm ceased and a calm settled in, leaving everything in sight covered in a thick white blanket, Loki could see that he was on a mountainside.

'Where in the nine realms is this?' He wondered. A soft breeze picked up around him, carrying a sweet singing voice along with it. Even though he knew he was in no condition to fight, a dagger reappeared in his right hand.

Loki cautiously made his way towards the beautiful voice, "The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside. Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I tried."

Finally, he saw the source and stepped behind some pines to observe. A woman with platinum hair and dressed like royalty stood before him. Besides her hair and mature face, her features were nearly identical to the girl in his visions. Her pale face held a sad expression while she sang, "Don't let them in, don't let them see. Be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal, don't feel; don't let them know. Well, now they know!"

"Let it go! Let it go! Can't hold it back anymore!" Loki was surprised when she created snowflakes from nothing and then proceeded to build a snowman with a wave of her hands. But what astonished him the most was when the snowman ran off after the woman turned her back towards it.

He watched as she created mesmerizing snow flurries like a perfected art as she sang. Her voice was angelic and carried the same force as the storm he found himself in earlier. Based on the lyrics, she must've been isolated and rejected but now she was rebelling. She unclasped her cape and let the wind carry it away, singing something about the cold never bothering her.

She walked on, stepping over a hill and out of sight. Loki left his spot behind the trees and followed her at a distance, dagger still at the ready. He doubted that she was a threat but one could never be sure.

Her voice muffled, but once he could hear her clearly again, "To test the limits and breakthrough. No right, no wrong, no rules for me. I'm free!"

By the time he could see her again, she was running up intricate stairs made of ice that formed before her as she ascended. Nothing could've prepared him for what she did when she reached the top.

Loki watched in awe as the pillars, spires, and walls of ice formed seemingly out of nothing. The woman sang and created an enormous castle of ice simultaneously.

The god of mischief found it astounding that such a frail-looking woman displayed such power. When he reached the bottom of the stairs he looked up to see double doors swing open and heard the woman singing.

"Let it go! Let it go! That perfect girl is gone."

She appeared on the balcony, her outfit changed into an elegant blue dress, hair down in a loose braid, and tiara discarded. Her voice carried over the mountains, "Here I stand in the light of day! Let the storm rage on! The cold never bothered me anyway."

The doors above slammed shut as she walked back inside, her song finished. Loki stood at the bottom of the stairs contemplating his next move. She'd be a force to reckon with but if he could manipulate her and gain her trust she'd be a formidable ally.

However, even with her incredible powers, her demeanor displayed that of a frightened mouse. Holding a weapon when he introduced himself would cause her to close herself off and shut him out. He let his dagger vanish, and he climbed the stairs, surprised that he had no trouble with slipping.

The blood on his hands smeared along the rails, staining the artwork. His vision was tunneling now, and he knew that he had to make it inside that castle to have any chance at survival. Once he reached the top he collapsed against the doors. He placed both hands on the doors, smudging them with his blood. It took more effort than he'd hoped to push the doors open.

He fell through them, yelling, "Please! I need help!"
