You’d started your day with a phone call. There was some ‘special’ patient you’d had to tend all day to. It happened from time to time, and normally it was some rich old guy or some rich old lady. Your boss promised to send you an email about the patient and his ailment. Great. Another old guy who’d be oogling you all day making weird comments.

When you saw the report, boy, you were far off.

A young man who was about your age who had a fractured hip bone. The report said he couldn’t remember how it happened at all, and there were traces of alcohol in his system. His rich sister had paid for the whole thing, and while the injury could be worse, he’s being put on watch for safety reasons.

Well, whatever. It’s just another day at the job.

You stepped into the hospital and immediately went to your desk to grab anything you’d need to see the patient (whose name was Link, how odd!) and to sanitize yourself before you knocked before stepping into the room. You immediately dropped your clipboard and closed the door.

The male, who was quite handsome, had started undressing in the room. Thankfully, he’d kept his pants on, but was still embarrassing. You shouted a quick apology, followed by a “Please let me know when you’re ready for visitors!”. God, you sucked.

After a bit, you heard the man yell “Come in!” and you went in, and the patient smiled. He’d kept his shirt off ‘because he was hot’. You cleared your throat.

“Hey, I’m L/N, your nurse for your stay. Sorry for barging in there!”

“It’s alright. You did knock too, I was just a bit too busy with this shirt. Do you guys have AC?”

“Yes. We do.” You held a remote and pressed the button for the AC, and a cold wind blew in Link’s direction. “If you were hot, you could’ve just told the staff.”

“Oh. Thanks.” He blushed.

“Getting back to your report, it says you fractured your hip bone but can’t remember how. Still can’t remember?”

“Oh, yeah. I went partying because my sister wanted to go and I didn't want to let her go by herself, you know? So, long story short, I was hit with a chair, and it hurt a bunch, and I was all like “Hey, I think something’s broken!” and here we are.”

You jotted it down and looked at him. “You also had a bit of alcohol in your system when we’d found you as well.”

“You drink at a party! Say, L/N, have you gone to a party?”

“No.” You didn’t get paid enough to chat with these people.

“Oh… well, at a petty, there are drinks-”

“I’m aware of how a party works. We’re getting off-track, so can we stop with this?”

He paused for a bit, thinking, before talking again.

“What’s wrong? Had a bad day?”

You blinked. It’s not every day your patient talks with you instead of praising how smart you are.

“Sorry, you’re probably busy. My bad. What’s the rest of your report say?”

“I- Okay, well besides that, it wasn’t too bad of a fracture, so you’ll only be here for a little while before you’re okay to leave. Even when you do, you should be careful to not… get hit by chairs.”

“That’s great news! But I’m gonna miss you when I leave, you’re already so nice to me.”

“Thank you.” You bowed a bit and passed Link a button. “If you need any assistance, please press this button. I’ll come to your aid right away.”

“Alright! Thank you, pretty nurse.”

“My name is L/N.”

“Oh, I know, but you’re a pretty nurse! The way you got all flustered when I was just taking off my shirt was cute.”

You shuffled your feet in embarrassment. I mean, you were a nurse and you’d seen people naked, but it was still awkward to walk in.

“Please… call me with the button if you need anything.” You gave him a curt bow and left before he could make you blush more.

What’s wrong with you today? Get yourself in the game!

You returned to your desk, sorting out papers for other patients, answering phone calls from sick patients, the normal.

Suddenly, your phone beeped at you. The screen was read and the text read ‘ Called for Assistance in room 119’. You sighed before grabbing your clipboard and making your way to Link’s room.

“Hello… do you need any assistance?”

Link sheepishly smiled. “Well, not really. I called you because I was… bored.”

You glared at him. “I’m sorry, but I’m terribly busy today. There should be a TV remote somewhere if this channel bores you.”

In reality, you were bored out of your mind too, but you were on the job. No time for idle chit-chat in a hospital.

“Yeah, but still! Do I just sit here all day and wait to get better?”

“That’s the point of a hospital. Maybe if you didn’t get yourself hurt you wouldn’t be here.”

“Tell me about yourself. Like, what’s your favorite food?”

“Why do you want to know about me so much?”

“You seem cool. I mean, you’re wearing an F/M lanyard.”

“I- I am. Uh, so I assume you like F/M too, yeah?” You grabbed a chair and sat down. Maybe you could afford to spend a bit chatting with him.

Eventually, you’d left to go do other things. Link was sad, but he understood. He was at least happy you’d opened up to him, but holy shit was hospitals boring. He made a mental note to call his sister, Zelda, later and ask if she was okay. Maybe she could come to visit.

Y/N walked into the room with a small smile on their face. “How do you feel?”

“Pretty okay. It’s still really boring, though.”

“Our reports tell us you’re doing a lot better than we’d expect, which is good. You’ll be out of here in no time, Link.”

“I’ll miss you when I leave, darling.” You clutched your clipboard tighter.

“Anyways” you cleared your throat, “I got you something.”

“A gift for me?” He smiled. “I can’t believe you’d take time out of your day for me!”

“It’s not yours to keep. You can borrow it.” You passed Link your old 3DS. You kept it on you on really slow days when you’d have nothing to do. “There aren’t a lot of games. But-”

“Thank you so much!”

“It’s nothing. I just felt- felt kinda bad.”

“You’re too nice to me. Hey, after this heals up, I’d be glad to take you out.”

“Sure, Link.”

Every day, they went and visited Link. Made sure he was okay, and that he was recovering well. Link loved their company. They were funny, kind, smart… Maybe Link liked them a bit too much. They were just a nurse after all.

“I’ve got good news, Link.”

“You’re going to stay with me forever?” He shot you a wink, and at this point, you were used to his little flirtatious comments. It didn’t stop you from getting hot again, though.

“Quite the opposite, you’re getting let go soon. Tomorrow we start training to make sure you can walk properly and such.”

His face fell. I mean, he knew he’d be let go eventually, but not this soon. Most people would be happy to leave, but he’d kinda ended up liking the hospital.

“Oh. Well… I guess that’s good.”

“It’s gonna be sad to see you go. But I don’t want to see you here hurt again.”

“I’ll uh, do my best.”

There was a sort of static in the air, and they both knew it. I shouldn’t have said anything.

“I’ll- I’m gonna leave now. Call me if you need anything.”

Before Link could say anything, you left the room and excused yourself to the restroom. You locked the door and sat down.

“Fuck.”

In the past month, you’d fallen in love. Or had you? There’s no way. Sure, he’s funny and charming, and you love his smirk and how cute he looks when he sleeps… Nope. You were in love. Hard.

But there was no way he liked you. He just flirted with you because he thought you were cute. You guys are friends at best. Yeah, just friends. He was just being friendly to the person that cared over him, like any other person.

You took a deep breath and splashed some water on your face to wake yourself up. It’s nothing.

-

When Y/N left the room (they were now both on a first-name basis) Link immediately slammed his head into a pillow.

Stupid. Stupid, stupid boy.

From when he was a kid, he’d always develop crushes early. There was Saria, the village girl. Sidon, the Zora boy he’d met when swimming. Nabooru, the Gerudo lady he met in school. There were too many people he could list that he’d crushed on.

But Y/N was truly different. At first, he flirted just because they were pretty, but as time grew he got to know them. He learned about how Y/N always carried tea bags on them since the tea in the hospital was rubbish or how they never wrote with a red pen. It was the little things that drew him into them, and he felt like he’d finally known them.

Guess he was wrong. I mean, if they had cared, they wouldn’t have said it so harshly. They’re just doing their job. He’s the fool for falling in love.

And so, they continued. Y/n continued to assist Link, Link would still crack jokes, but there was still that static. That fog of not wanting to go too far, so you don’t try anything at all. Both of them just stayed in their bubbles.

Two weeks passed, and Link was almost ready to go. They’d decided to try and make an effort to ask least ask the man to hang out sometime as friends, with a little persuasion from your friend who worked with you, Mipha.

“Look, he seems nice! Just ask him to hang out! Like, uhh… ‘Hey, I know you like tea so let’s go to this awesome tea place!’ Take it slow.” the Zora girl told you.

“What if he says no?”

“By how close you two are, I doubt he’d say no. Why would he?”

“I guess I could try it.”

You helped Link get his stuff. Having changed into his old clothes again, he wore a t-shirt with his usual jacket and navy jeans. As his hair had grown a bit during his hospital stay, he wore it up in a bun.

“You look nice. It’s weird to see you outside a hospital gown.”

“It’s nice to be back in my own clothes.” Link patted your shoulder. “But I guess I gotta get going now. Thanks for everything, Y/N. My sister’s waiting for me.”

“Hey- Before you go… Do you want to hang out sometime? Like, to go get coffee or something.”

He smiled. “I’d love to! Here- hold on. What’s your phone number?”

You typed the digits into his phone, and he saved it as ‘pretty nurse y/n’.

“You don’t have to save my contact name like that, you know.”

“C’mon! It’s our little inside joke.” he laughed, and you ended up giggling along. You whipped out your phone and handed it to Link so he could save it.

In retaliation, you marked the name as ‘pretty boy Link’ and smirked. He blushed.

“Well, you coulda just told me you thought I was pretty, you know.”

“Nah, your ego’s already big enough for that, airhead.” A ring from your phone alerted you that you were needed.

“Gotta run. I’ll talk to you later, okay?“You pulled down your mask and kissed him on the cheek, then fixed it and stepped into the hallway. A smile spread across his face and he rubbed the cheek where you kissed him, before leaving.

“See? It went perfectly! Matchmaker Mipha here at your service.” the Zora girl smiled, spinning in her chair.

You blew a bubble with the gum in your mouth before it popped. “Yeah, I guess I owe ya one.”

“You sure do! You better bring donuts and coffee over here tomorrow. That place from down the street, you know?”

“It’s always so crowded though! I don’t wanna wait in a line so long.”

“Get there before the line, then.” She smirked.

You checked your phone, and a text was waiting for you.

“You busy this weekend?”
