Work Text:

Raditz sighed with contentment as he rested his head on top of his mate’s and watched as their pups ran across the bright green grassy fields, chasing each other, playing tag, or roughhousing. He chuckled softly as some of his pups jumped into the pond, splashing noisily before getting chased away by local angry geese. He heard Tights sigh beneath him, and he raised his head in concern, “Darling, are you alright?”

Tights glanced up at him and smiled, “Perfectly content, Dear.”

Raditz smiled back and licked her golden snout before putting his head back down on hers and sighed again happily. His ears perked when he heard a familiar jazz tune come on the radio song by a throaty female singer.

Blueberry blue

She's blueberry blue

When you hear her knock

You'll wish it weren't you...

Raditz chuckled at the lyrics his pet, Vegeta, had written for his catchy tune and he heard Bulma, his mate’s pet, turn the radio dial up louder, “Oh Vegeta, my love, they’re playing it!”

The smell of his pet’s pipe tobacco alerted Raditz of his presence, and he heard Vegeta huffed before turning the page of his newspaper, “Of all my songs to get a hit.”

“Oh, but it’s perfectly wonderful, my love,” Bulma said, and Raditz turned his head slightly to see her kiss her husband’s cheek, and Vegeta’s ears pinken.

Raditz snickered to himself. It had been almost a year since Raditz encountered Tights and forced his bachelor pet to meet his now-wife, and Raditz could almost remember it like yesterday…

Raditz yawned wide before giving a bored sigh and laid his head on the windowsill as he studied the hustle and bustle of town going by. His pet, Vegeta, was toiling away on the piano, no doubt scowling at the keys as music notes floated around the room. Raditz gave another sigh. The life of a bachelor was rather dull. While his pet wrote about all the ironic things, love, Raditz would lie at his perch on the window for hours end and do nothing but stare at the other dogs and pets living their lives.

Love…

Raditz glanced at the magazines strewn beside him on the ottoman and studied the one with a woman posing in a swimsuit. Perhaps that is what his pet needed- a mate. Raditz pushed the magazine with his nose to look at the cover of the one underneath. This one had a brunette woman, in a flashy dress and tilted his head in thought before glancing at Vegeta. He supposed his pet was an attractive fellow, so there shouldn’t be any reason why he didn’t have a mate already.

Raditz decided it was time to take matters into his own paws and glanced out the window for a respectable partner for his pet. Hmmm… .

He perked up when he saw a woman with dark hair walk by with a beret on top of her head and wearing bell-bottom pants with a bright color shirt. On her leash was a long-haired Yorkshire terrier, and Raditz shook his head. He had a feeling that a “retro” woman would be insufferable to his pet, Vegeta, and not to mention the dog was too small for Raditz’s own liking.

Another woman rounded around the corner, this time short blonde hair and dressed in a form-fitting black velvet dress that went over her knees, and she was adorned with a pearl necklace. Raditz followed the path of her dog, a sleek, white Saluki, and Raditz immediately dismissed them. Too fancy. Much too fancy, especially for someone like Vegeta, who was frugal to a fault.

Raditz watched an older woman meander on by with an elderly bulldog, and he chuckled. He did consider Vegeta an old soul, but perhaps they were a little too old. A young college girl walked by with her raven hair pulled back into a tight bun and her Doberman by her side with an equally stiff back, and Raditz could already imagine the rows her and his pet would get into, not to mention her young age.

Raditz sighed hopelessly and laid back down on the window ledge. He didn’t think finding the perfect mate for his pet would be this difficult. He blinked, his eyes starting to feel heavy with sleep, and just as his eyes were about to close, a flash of gold caught his attention. He turned his head, and he froze in place with awe. A golden retriever with golden fur that was pale in contrast to his rusty color, was strolling down the path with an elegant sway to her gait. She was the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen on four legs, and Raditz jumped up as he panted with excitement. If only her pet… Raditz nearly barked with joy when he saw that the woman was lovely with sky-blue hair up in an elegant coif and wearing a tailored forest green coat and skirt. Raditz would never find a more perfect pair even if he searched for a million years!

He took a quick note of the direction they were heading and quickly dove off the ottoman, running up to the window by the stairs to see that they were heading toward the park. A perfect place to meet! Raditz ran to grab his leash but came to a halt when he glanced at the clock at the mantle. It wasn’t five yet, the time Vegeta usually stopped his work. Raditz peeked over at his pet, who was pounding at a disobedient key that had gained his wrath, and he carefully used his nose to change the minute hand of the clock to change it pass five o’clock. Raditz grabbed his red leash and ran over to Vegeta with a playful bark. Vegeta snapped his head to Raditz and then glanced at the clock before he tapped at his watch, “It’s past five o’clock already?” He shook his watch to check that it was ticking while Raditz impatiently nuzzled his leg, “Alright, boy, settle down.”

Vegeta stood and stretched his back, walking over to the coat rack to grab his jacket and hat to cover that cowlick that refused to stay in place. Raditz thought he would die if Vegeta didn’t move quickly and jumped on him in urgency. Vegeta sighed in exasperation as he put on Raditz’s leash and went to light his pipe. Raditz managed to get the door open and raced through the hall as he heard Vegeta grunt in surprise. Raditz was outside in no time, dragging Vegeta behind him as he bounded into the park and searching high and low for their perfect pair. Raditz felt his heart turn to despair with each turn, fearing that he lost them, and his hope threatened to be dashed every time he ran into the wrong couple. Raditz was soon going to call it quits when he got a glimpse of gold.

He stopped, and there she was. His perfect mate was sitting beside her pet that was perched on the bench, doodling in her notebook as he glanced up at the scenery of the pond before her. Raditz took in the scene, trying to decide the best plan of attack, when Vegeta continued walking, smoking his pipe before sitting on the far end of the bench from the woman. Raditz tried his best to look dignified next to his pet, and he glanced over at the pretty golden dog. To his delight,  she was staring at him with curiosity until he caught her and then she turned away.

Raditz smiled to himself as he sat in front of Vegeta, who was steadfastly smoking on his pipe. However, to Raditz's surprise, his pet turned his head to the woman with a clear interest in his eyes while she focused on her drawing. The wheels in Raditz’s head turned as he thought of the perfect way to get them to meet. He walked away from them, pretending to smell the grass, and trees around them and turned in a large circle as he kept his focus on the beautiful creature that was trying hard not to watch him. He wagged his tail and suddenly rushed at her, barking as he jumped on his future mate and startled the woman. She shrieked, papers flying everywhere as Raditz rolled with the retriever, who yelped in surprise, and he pinned her down with a grin. She stared at him with shock before she tried to nip his snout for his behavior.

“RADITZ!” Vegeta growled angrily, and Raditz looked up to see his owner storm over to him with a scowl. Raditz barked at him before running away and circling around the woman to grab some of her papers that she was desperately trying to pick up. “Raditz, you dumb dog! Get back here!”

“No! Stop! Please, I need those!” The woman tried to get her papers in order as the retriever helped her gather the papers, and Vegeta chased after him.

“Raditz! I’m going to put you in the pound if you don’t stop this at once!” Vegeta snarled at him, and Raditz kept running. The woman also got up to chase after him, and Raditz managed to evade them, dancing along the edge of the pond. And then… it happened! His pet and the blue haired woman collided into each other, and teetered at the edge of the pond before falling in with a large splash. The pretty retriever ran over to the edge and watched helplessly as the woman and Vegeta splashed in the water, trying to get their bearings,  and Vegeta finally managed to stand before reaching into the water and picking up the woman in his arms. She screamed in surprise and wrapped her arms around his neck tight, pressing her cold, wet body into his, Vegeta stumbled a bit, but he managed to get out of the pond and carry her to the bench, “My apologies, I don’t know what got into him.”

“Just, get away! My new suit! And my drawings!” She sobbed as she tried to wring the water out of her clothing. She went to retrieve her handkerchief from her pocket only to find it drenched, “This day can’t get any worse! I get attacked, nearly drown, and get rescued by some muscled bonehead!”

“You didn’t seem to mind the muscles,” Vegeta said as he pulled out his own handkerchief, which was larger but equally as soggy. They both blinked at it, and the woman suddenly had a fit of giggles, Vegeta chuckled in amusement as he wrung out the wet cloth. He carefully dabbed her cheek and tucked back a strand of blue hair out of her face, making her blush slightly as she pushed back his bangs for him. Raditz sat and watched them begin to talk just as he felt the beautiful retriever sit beside him.

“You’re reckless,” she said to him as she watched their pets.

Raditz turned to her and licked her snout, “It was worth it.”

“Mama, papa, I’m hungry!”

Raditz broke from his memories and smiled as he turned to his pup, Barja. His lucky little girl, who was tugging on his ears and he couldn’t help but chuckle, “Alright, alright.” Raditz stood and picked her up by the scruff and grunted with some effort; she may have been the runt of their litter, but she had grown considerably since then.

Tights giggled at them, “She’s getting too big for you to pick up, dear, and soon we will have more on the way.”

Raditz gently put his pup down and pushed her bottom with his snout to guide her toward the house, “She’ll always be a pup to me, just like all her siblings.” Raditz licked her snout affectionately, a little hesitant to leave his pregnant mate, but he knew that no harm would come to her anymore.
