The exact moment Izuku decided he had to fall out of love with his childhood crush was the moment said crush told him to kill himself. Of course, it took a lot longer for that plan to come into fruition, but it did eventually. It was the same moment that he realised just how unfair the world was. Because Kacchan – no, Bakugou from now on – was right. He didn’t have a quirk, and he was just a nerd, and he couldn’t stand up to a middle schooler let alone a villain, and how was he meant to be a popular hero if he couldn’t even get his best friend to stop hating him? Maybe he just wasn’t meant to be a hero.
He took the long way home that day, through the woods. He needed time to think. If he wasn’t going to go to U.A., if he wasn’t going to follow Bakugou, if he wasn’t going to be a hero, then what was he going to do? He was so lost in thought that he only realised he was humming until a bird whistled his tune back to him, and he was startled into laughter. He whistled a different tune, one he made up on the spot, and sure enough, the bird sang it right back. And it sounded good. Kind of sad, kind of melancholy, but something he might listen to. So right there and then, he pulled out his (slightly destroyed) notebook, scratched out the title, and rewrote ‘Songbook’. And Midoriya Izuku wrote his first song.
The forest became his source of inspiration, and like the first time, he would often use the birds to see how a tune sounded. But just sitting there grew boring, so he started to run while he wrote. Over the summer, he discovered a love for both music and running, and became proficient in singing and pretty fit. But a sudden discovery of music a couple of months before high school wasn’t enough to persuade his mother to let him go to a music school, so he studied a lot too, and along the way found he was incredibly academically talented too. It made sense – he had an innate love for research, and when his memory was huge after training it to remember all those hero facts. Not only that, but there were courses that were specifically about heroes, where he could learn about quirk theory and hero history and quirk law. And if he continued to study, maybe he could work at a hero agency as something else other than a pro hero (and there was so much else). But still, even if he loved school, there was nothing he enjoyed more than music.
The fact that his academics were so sound persuaded his mother to allow him both singing and guitar lessons. Every day after school (and homework, of course), he would be practicing, and trying to figure out what chord patterns would fit with the lyrics he wrote over the summer. At lunch he would be found in the practice rooms, and spent so much time in there with the piano that he resolved to teach himself how to play that too. When he wasn’t playing or studying, he was working out in the school gym. He was invited to play most of the school sports, but team sports didn’t really interest him, and besides, they would take up too much time. But then he realised that dancing was an option, and something that would combine his love for music and exercise. By the end of high school, he was an excellent dancer (and had become strong and fit in the process), and a master musician, winning national prizes and with a dozen notebooks full of songs shelved in his room.
It wasn’t until he started college that one of his friends suggested he post some of his songs online.
He started out slow, posting clips of just the guitar and his voice, not speaking or dancing or anything. But eventually he gained followers, and became confident enough to introduce his music, then show his face. He became good enough at editing that he could record piano, guitar, and singing separately, and actually started dancing in a few of his videos. And suddenly, before he knew it (due to a mixture of his talent and good looks), he found himself at over half a million subscribers.

New Video from IzukuCan’tSing – 500K Q&A (it rhymes! Songwriter who?)
“Hello, world! Welcome back to IzukuCan’tSing! As you can tell by the title, I’ve finally given into peer pressure and am doing something different today! Honestly, you’d think no one wanted to hear my music. So first of all, thank you guys so, so much for 500K subscribers. I don’t want to make this too cheesy, but I can’t convey how much it means to me that so many people care about what I’m making. So, yeah, thank you. Anyway, I’m sure y’all know how a Q&A goes, so let’s get started.
“It’s only right to start with a question from Twitter user @iloveizuku, as her tweet finally pushed me over the edge to make this video. So, thanks, Layla! She asks, ‘how did you first get into music?’ Okay, so this is actually a kind of ridiculous story, but I was walking in the woods in, like, middle school, and this bird suddenly sings a tune back to me that I hadn’t even realised I was humming, and I was like, ‘huh, that would make a great song’, so I wrote it, and the rest is history! That song is actually the first one I ever posted, ‘Not a Hero’, so if you want to torture me, feel free to scroll down on my page to find it.
“Next question is from user @twentyfourpenguins, ha I love your username, which says ‘are you at college? What are you studying?’ Yes, I am at college, in the lovely city of Tokyo, and I’m studying Quirk History and Theory, which loads of people are surprised about because it has nothing to do with music or dance or anything. But it’s actually really interesting – it covers stuff from the 2020 pandemic until the introduction of Quirks, and how all the events during that time are all interlinked and have a knock-on effect until now. Sorry, yeah, no one cares. But as a kid I was super interested in Quirks and heroes, so it’s a nice nod to my past self.
“Next question is… from @IzukuDrivesMeCrazy! Haha, I’m sorry for any psychological damage. Um, they ask ‘how tall are you? You look massive in your videos!’ Oh, haha, yeah, I’m pretty tall. Um, I don’t really know how it happened, I was pretty small actually up until, like, my last year of high school, then I shot up, and now I’m like, what? 6’6”? 6’7” And, yeah, I may look so big because of muscle? I don’t know, I work out a lot, too, and dancing helps a lot.
“Anyway, next question! @minananana asks ‘I love your dance moves! What’s your inspiration for dance?’ First of all, thanks. Dancing’s the hobby I started after all my other musical stuff, so I’m glad that it’s okay! Um, so, I started dancing because I loved fitness and exercising and stuff, but I didn’t really have enough time in high school to join a sports team, and running and weights were getting boring. I guess my inspiration is that it’s just so fun, it’s great to keep fit and also a great way to express myself. Singing and guitar and piano I all take lessons for and do competitions and stuff, but dance is just my own thing that I can have fun with. So yeah, not a great answer, but honestly as long as you have fun with what you do, I don’t really think you need another reason to do it.
“@imobsessed asks what’s my Quirk. Hmm, well, I’m actually Quirkless. I used to be really bummed about it – it was my biggest dream to be a hero, and I got pretty badly bullied because of it. But honestly, my life would have been so different if I had had a Quirk – I would never have got into music and dance and never started up this whole YouTube thing or interact with all you wonderful people. I know it’s a pretty, um, weird thing, I guess, but I hope y’all don’t hate me for it. Um, yeah, let’s move on.
“Okay, @georgiesgeorge wants to know what my song ‘Just Like You’ is about. So, that’s one of the ones I wrote ages ago, like way before I started posted my music on here. It’s pretty much about all the people I wanted to be like, my childhood idols like All Might and, um, a couple of kids who I went to school with who I thought were so cool, and how I finally realised I wasn’t like them. Yeah.
“Now, for the final question, which sounds like I’m cutting this video short but you’ll see in a sec. @izukusbiggestfan asks what I’m doing to celebrate 500K, and, I’m about to show you! I thought, whilst I’m doing a non-music video, and exposing myself with questions, I might as well expose my terrible baking skills too and make a celebratory cake! Of course, this is like the least original idea on the planet but it’s a classic for a reason. Okay, let’s head to my kitchen!”
Izuku snaps his fingers, and transitions to his kitchen, where he proceeds to unsuccessfully bake a chocolate cake, and very successfully ruin his kitchen. As he bakes, he answers a couple more questions, but it’s mostly chaos and panic.
“Okay, that tastes awful, and I have a lot of cleaning up to do, so that’s all for now! Thank you for watching! Oh, oh, and also I have a poll on my Instagram and Twitter (sorry Instagrammers for leaving you out of this video by the way) to see if I should do some livestreaming over on Twitch, so go and check that out if you have an opinion either way. I’d probably do boring stuff like study with mes, but occasionally I’d do more Q&As or maybe even let you guys into my song writing process, so if that’s something you’d be interested in, please let me know!
