Kanda isn’t materialistic. She’s got preferences for street food, for band T-shirts, for the occasional pretty thing, but luxurious items are an indulgence. University fees are already burning through her parents’ savings, and she’s been brought up better than to let her eyes linger on what she knows she can’t afford.
The Cortier necklace feels weighty. The chain’s slim and silvery, clasped so securely to the pendant that reflects elegance, surety in itself as a ring. A ring. She can’t help but let that fantasy into her head, dangerous and wispy.
Kanda puts on the necklace anyway, come morning. The pendant’s chill startles her again, but by the time she steps out of her house it’s almost as if it has melded to her skin, found its space in the dip between her clavicle, warmed by the proximity to a heart that can’t help but harbor hope.
It’s always there. With the fall of her feet alongside Ookuma’s bouncy steps, with each chuckle Ookuma draws out of her, with every brush of Ookuma’s hand against her own. It’s there, no matter how often the tribulations of growing up have told her it’s better off smothered.
A luxury. It comforts her.
