“Are you sure you are not going to sleep some more?”
Renjun let a small chuckle escape from his mouth before nodding his head firmly towards his boyfriend, Jeno, who had been asking him about this matter a few times already.
Well, Renjun couldn’t really blame his boyfriend. He knew it was completely because Jeno was concerned about his condition. Scratch that, it’s not only his condition, but both of their conditions.
Both of them were currently in their 3rd year residency and of course, like any other resident doctors, Renjun and Jeno had a really terrible sleeping schedule.
Especially Renjun, who’s a resident under the pediatric surgery department.
Originally, Jeno thought that he was lucky to be a resident under the general surgery department because it was not as crazy as his boyfriend’s department.
But who would think that he was going to be the surgical professors’ favorite assistant? Certainly not Jeno himself.
So here he was, being twice busier than Renjun.
Renjun and Jeno had been together since the last year of their medical school and they were still going pretty strong until now.
People said, being resident doctors who had to juggle between work, study and relationship was hard. Renjun and Jeno could confirm this statement, it was indeed hard but also worth it.
Sometimes their other friends, who’s not in the medical field like them, would ask them about their dates or how they would spend their time together when they were both clearly busy with their work and study most of the time.
Jeno would answer, “We still go on dates and spend our time together, don’t worry.”
While Renjun would just simply say, “We have our own ways.”
Yes, they had their own ways.
Giving each other coffee or tea. Eating lunch together at the hospital’s cafeteria (even though they ended up getting distracted by duty calls and ditched one another because of it). Taking the same night shift schedules. Using the same on-call room and having their lockers next to each other.
Sometimes Renjun would end up sleeping in Jeno’s bed, other times it would be Jeno sleeping in Renjun’s bed. They would cuddle each other up, feeling the need to recharge their energy with each other’s warmth.
Some days, Jeno would bring Renjun food and snacks, knowing clearly that his petite boyfriend often forgot his meals. Jeno would leave the food and snacks he got for Renjun to Jisung, the clumsy intern whom his boyfriend cherished dearly.
Some nights, Renjun had to attend emergency calls and ended up sticking some colorful notes on Jeno’s locker, filled with his own doodles and short love letters to his boyfriend.
That’s how Jeno and Renjun both spent their time together. They had considered those moments to be their so-called little dates and they were happy with how things had been going for them so far.
Usually if both Jeno and Renjun had free time, even if it’s just for a while, they would immediately use it to cuddle and sleep.
But today was an exception.
A few weeks ago, Renjun had promised Jeno that they would watch a movie together on Valentine’s Day. And today was the day.
It’s February 14th.
But who would know that on this love day, there were so many things happening in the hospital?
Renjun had to assist two big surgeries with Professor Kim since dawn. By the end of his schedule in the evening, Renjun was exhausted.
He went straight to his bed after being dismissed by Professor Kim and if it’s not because of his boyfriend’s gentle touches and kisses, Renjun might still be sleeping peacefully.
When Renjun had finally sobered himself up, he had noticed that they were the only ones left in the on-calls room. Jeno was there, waiting for him to wake up with a tub full of half caramel and half original popcorns in his hand.
“Where did you get that?” Renjun squinted his eyes a little as he kept on eyeing the popcorn tub.
“The tub or the popcorn?” Jeno questioned Renjun back as he brought the popcorn closer to his petite boyfriend.
Renjun rolled his eyes while taking some popcorn from the tub and popped it in his mouth. “The tub, obviously. I knew you had some packets of instant popcorn ready in your locker, Jeno. Please don’t tell me you went to the cinema theatre only to buy the tub.”
Renjun watched how his boyfriend’s eyes turned into crescent shapes and let out the most beautiful sound Renjun ever heard. “No, no. I’m not crazy, okay? I got it from Professor Jung.”
“Professor Jung?” Renjun raised his eyebrows amusedly before moving himself around a bit to make space for his boyfriend to settle in his bed. He grabbed the popcorn tub from Jeno’s hand so the taller one could move around more freely to set up their so-called movie date.
Jeno nodded his head while taking out his iPad, before settling himself down beside Renjun. “Yes, apparently he went to the cinema with his boyfriend last week. They ordered popcorn and it came with that tub but they didn’t even get to finish it because of duty calls. Professor Jung had to go back to the hospital and his boyfriend said to take the popcorn with him.”
He turned his iPad on, quickly searching for the movie that they were going to watch. “He ended up throwing the popcorn away the next day because he forgot about it and kept the tub since he thought it kinda came in handy. I asked him if I could borrow it and he said yes, so that’s the story of the tub.”
“God, I kinda feel sorry for Professor Jung’s boyfriend somehow.”
“Huh? Don’t be. I heard some nurses gossiping at the front desk yesterday. They said Professor Jung’s boyfriend is also a doctor.” Jeno said as he pressed the play button for the movie with his index finger.
Renjun rolled his eyes, “Since when do you have so much free time to hear some nurses gossiping around, baobei?”
“It’s not like I have the time for it, I just happened to be there, babe.” Jeno whined and wrapped his arms around his petite boyfriend, bringing him into his warm and tight embrace.
“Sure, sure. Whatever you said, baobei.”
They both fell into a comfortable silence for a while as they waited for the movie to load.
Renjun sensed something wasn’t right and frowned immediately when he saw the title of the movie when it started playing.
“Waitㅡ what the fuck?”
He pulled himself away from Jeno’s tight and warm embrace before looking at his boyfriend incredulously, “Really, Jeno? A fucking horror movie even on Valentine’s day?”
Look, here’s a thing about Renjun and Jeno. They were both avid fans of horror movies. They literally watched all the famous ones together. They enjoyed relieving themselves from the stress of working and studying too hard by watching good horror movies together.
It was like their coping mechanism.
Their healing.
But still, who the fuck wanted to watch a fucking horror movie on their Valentine’s day date?
Of course no one.
Not even a horror movie enthusiast like Huang Renjun wanted that.
“What’s wrong with horror movies though? I remember that you have been wanting to watch Conjuring 3 for a while, Junnie.” Jeno answered dumbly while trying to circle his arms again around Renjun, clearly missing his boyfriend’s warmth already.
“You remembered?” Renjun asked quietly as he once again found himself in his boyfriend’s tight and warm embrace.
“Of course I remembered, Jun.” Jeno smiled softly. “It’s kinda hard not to remember it too actually, since you literally ranted about that in front of my face everytime we met.”
Renjun smiled back sheepishly after hearing that. It’s true that he had been ranting that he wanted to watch the said movie to his boyfriend for a while now. But still, Renjun found it cute the way Jeno remembered everything that was coming from him.
“So do you want to continue watching this or do you want me to change it to other movies that are more appropriate for the Valentine’s day theme?” Jeno asked gently, trying to bring back their focus on the movie that they ignored for a moment.
“No, it’s alright. Let’s just watch this.” Renjun said softly, eyes already drifting back to the screen.
Jeno smiled softly while still had his eyes on Renjun, studying the side profile of his boyfriend who’s already so into the movie.
He had always thought that Renjun was very attractive. Especially when he was being serious, like when he was presenting himself to his professors or other doctors.
He also thought that Renjun was extremely endearing and cute, even though the said man didn’t want to admit it himself. Especially when he was feeling excited to learn something new or when he got praises from anyone that he had considered as important people in his life.
Jeno also had always thought Renjun was pretty. Especially when he was very focused on something simple, like right now, when they were watching a movie.
While looking at his boyfriend so closely like this, Jeno couldn’t help but to remind himself again how lucky he was to have Renjun in his arms like this.
How grateful Jeno was to have Renjun as his lover, his boyfriend, his soulmateㅡ you name it.
“I love you.”
And before Jeno could stop himself, he had blurted his thoughts and feelings out loud.
Renjun, who was actually very immersed in the movie, quickly pulled his attention away just to face his boyfriend after he heard that. He laughed a little when he saw how red Jeno’s face was.
“Are you even watching the movie, Lee Jeno?”
“No, I am watching you, obviously.” Jeno mumbled, clearly shy but still wanted to be honest because that’s just how he was as a person.
Renjun grinned widely and said, “One day, you are going to be the death of me, baobei.”
Jeno gasped dramatically before saying, “Oh no, I will definitely try to save your life, babe. I’m a very capable doctor, you see.”
“Oh my God, shut up you dork!” Renjun shook his head in amusement.
When he first met Jeno in their first year of medical school, he thought Jeno was a cold and scary person because of how Jeno looked from the outside, not to mention that Jeno was extremely quiet back then.
But it turned out Renjun was totally wrong. Jeno was the biggest dork that he had ever known.
And Renjun loved him.
“I love you too, Jen.” Renjun whispered softly as he looked at Jeno. The movie had been long forgotten by the two of them. “I’m glad that I could spend another Valentine’s day with you again.”
Jeno looked at his petite boyfriend back and slowly leaned in closer towards the others. “We could spend Valentine’s day together forever, Junnie. Only if you want to.”
“Oh please. Be my Valentine forever and ever, Jeno baobei.” Renjun smiled and whispered softly before pressing his lips against Jeno’s lips lovingly.

Bonus:
Jeno jolted awake from his deep slumber as he felt someone shaking his body up. He sat right up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes when he heard a distraught voice asking him. “Wait, Doctor Leeㅡ? Where is Doctor Huang?”
Jeno blinked his unfocused eyes a couple of times while trying to process what was happening. “Professor Kim?” He asked unsurely.
“Yes, it’s me. I thought you were Doctor Huang so I hurriedly woke you up, I apologize for that.” Professor Kim said before continuing, “But why are you in Doctor Huang’s bed?”
“Ahㅡ It’s just I was too tired to climb up to the top bunk bed and I fell asleep here..” Jeno answered quietly and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
It’s not that Jeno was afraid that people in the hospital would find out about his relationship with Renjun, but it’s Renjun’s professor that he was talking to. So he had to lie a little bit for the sake of his boyfriend.
Jeno didn’t want to give Renjun a hard time.
“I see. So, do you know whereㅡ wait a minuteㅡ is that a popcorn tub? Did you go to the cinema today?”
Professor Kim’s eyes caught the popcorn tub that had been put aside on the desk beside Renjun and Jeno’s bunk bed. Jeno looked at the said item as well and nodded his head innocently.
“Yes, that’s a popcorn tub and no, Professor. I borrowed it from Professor Jung yesterday.”
“Professor Jungㅡ you mean Jaehyunie?”
Jeno was slightly taken aback when he heard that cute nickname came out from the professor who’s still standing in front of him. “Yes, Professor Jung Jaehyun.”
Professor Kim scoffed, shaking his head in disbelief and mumbling quietly. “What an idiot, he really kept that stupid popcorn tub just because I said it would come in handy?”
“Eh? Professor Kim knew Professor Jung?” Jeno asked confusedly.
“Knew? I have been dating that idiot for 8 years already.” Professor Kim said lightly before waving his hands like saying it’s not that important.
Jeno’s jaw dropped open in surprise when he heard that. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
His professor, Jung Jaehyun, had been dating Renjun’s professor, Kim Doyoung, for 8 freaking years? And no one in the hospital had found out about this yet? Damn.
“I’ll be going then since I think Doctor Huang has already gone to check up the patient. See you around, Doctor Lee.”
Jeno nodded and bowed his head as he watched Professor Kim leave the room hurriedly. He thought over the fact of his own professor dating Renjun’s professor.
Wasn’t it like fate that their two favorite residents were also dating each other in secret?
It’s fate. It’s definitely really fate for them.
