Like We Aren't Married

Summary:

Eren misses taking Mikasa out on a date. He misses holding her hand while they walk around the city, he misses dining with her in a restaurant, he misses going out with her because all his wife did for the past weeks is to work. So he decided, one day, to take her out. Not in a busy city, not in a loud restaurant but in a quieter place his wife needed to be.

Notes:

I really wanted to try this one-shot EreMika fic so here it goes, I guess. This will be my first entry for the EreMika Fluff 2021 and I hope you guys enjoy! :")

Work Text:

Eren rushed out of the kitchen when he heard their front door open. He was busy scanning the cookbook he bought a while ago from the market, wanting to try another dish he could cook for his wife. He placed the product on the table near their door and a smile immediately showed on his face when he saw his wife. He kissed her cheeks, like he always does every time she comes home, and took her bags. She has at least two bags she carries every day, one for her office stuffs and another one for the lunch his husband prepares for her every morning. Eren sometimes feels sorry about it, especially since she carries a lot of things for work already but she would assure him that it’s fine and that she loves it. Because she really does. She loves bragging about it with her workmates, that she has such a caring husband who never fails to cook for her every day.

“How’s your day?” He asked, placing her bags on the table near their couch.

“Not good. My boss fired someone today.” Mikasa groaned as she plops her body on the couch, tired. Her back aching from having to sit in front of her office desk.

Eren sat beside her and snuggled her, placing his head on her shoulders as he listens to his wife, ranting about her boss and how he was wrong about firing someone who only did her job. It was always tough, with her work, that is. Her boss is unreasonable with everything that they do and nobody can complain about it, which sucks, big time. Mikasa only stays for the paycheck, only stays solely for that reason. If not, she would’ve quit a long time ago. Her rant continued with how her mind was occupied the whole day, how the clamor inside their workspace gave her a headache and the way she had to deal with all the pushing she got from the people on the bus stop, rushing to go home the same way she does.

Who could blame them, though?

Mikasa, too, wants to go home as soon as possible because it is where she feels at peace. She longs for the warmth Eren’s hugs give. After a long day of work, all she just wants is to stay in bed with her husband and cuddle him to sleep.

Because in his arms, her worries fade.

“Hey..” Eren started after a while she stopped talking. “Since you’ve been busy, we haven’t been out on a date for months now.”

Mikasa looked at him with a pair of sad eyes. “I’m so sorry.”

He shook his head, raising his body a bit so they could level their gazes. “It’s not that.. I’m not angry at you.” He kissed her hands, reassuring her. “I just want to ask you out. I booked the train already to take you to the beach, that’s where you want to go and unwind, right?”

She was flustered for moment but she nodded, a smile forming on her lips. She wasn’t expecting him to remember what she said a month ago when stress from work was too much but they didn’t have the time to go. “You’d take me there?” She asked, excited.

“Of course, anything for you. I missed you.” He whispered softly, adjusting his position again to hug her for the rest of the night.

Saturday morning came, Mikasa glanced by the window train, admiring the view she sees outside. They boarded the train quite late in the morning since Eren had to run to the grocery first and leave their dog (whom they consider as their child) with enough food before they go out and spend the day together. It’s been weeks since they last dated, if eating in a small diner late at night because they got hungry actually counts as one. Mikasa had been focused on her work lately but he can’t blame her for that, too. He understands well and is happy enough that they see each other every morning and night.

They got off the train and walked from the station to the beach, a suggestion by Mikasa. She reasoned that instead of riding a cab, which is way expensive for their budget, they should just walk to save money. “It’s a 25-minute walk, Eren! Save the earth and save money.” But the real reason she has is that she missed holding his hands with him while walking. Like Eren, she missed those too.

When her sight finally caught the massive expanse of the crystal water, she screamed in both awe and joy. She called his name, tugging onto his shirt like a child, his husband could only laugh at her cuteness. He knew she needed this.

“There aren’t a lot of people.” She pointed out as they walk through the sand. A handful of people can be seen around them, a family of 3, a guy jogging even though it’s past 8 o’clock now, and a couple, like them.

“I reserved this place for you.” He jokingly said. They pulled out their picnic blanket mat (which Eren bought in the store, expecting this already) and placed their bags there, leaving it.

Mikasa held his hands as they run into the waters. Feeling the coldness of it, they both squealed, jumping lightly in surprise. Eren couldn’t stop himself from laughing, happiness is coursing through him. Days like these are what he wants to treasure forever.

“It’s so cold!!” She screamed. She swayed her ankle, intentionally splashing Eren’s side with water.

Eren frowned. “Let’s not—” He was stopped mid-sentence when she did it again.

She laughed at him, his face unreadable but Mikasa knows it’s either he wants to laugh or cry instead, because their plans don’t include having to walk around wearing a wet short. “I’m sorry—AAAAA!” She screamed at the top of her lungs when Eren started to ran after her.

“You’re not getting away from me!” He shouted, eager to catch her. The water slowing him down but thankfully, his wife is much of a slower runner. He quickly wrapped his hands from behind when he caught her, not letting her escape now. He pampered her face with kisses, making her giggle from each contact.

“Ah, stop!” She shouted, shying her blushing face away. Eren chuckled, then placing his head on her shoulder instead while still hugging her from behind. “Thank you for bringing me here.”

He only nodded in response.

They both fell silence after, just feeling the cold breeze passing by their skin. Mikasa sighed in content, slightly swaying their bodies together. She’s happy being with Eren, if that isn’t obvious already. She wouldn’t trade him for anyone or anything else and she wanted the world to know that—she wanted her parents who opposed to their relationship to know that. They didn’t want Eren for her, he wasn’t rich like anybody else out there, but he was the one Mikasa’s heart long for.

Five years since they ran away together, away from anyone who said nothing but mean things to them who only wanted to love each other, Mikasa still doesn’t regret this. She doesn’t regret living with him, marrying him and finding her happiness in him.

With Eren, she feels contented.

“Mikasa.” She heard him speak. He pulled away from the hug, gently turning her around until her eyes met with his emerald eyes. “Will you marry me?”

She chuckled. She put her hands on his cheeks, pulling his face closer to him. “Yes, Eren. I will.” She answered with a smile on her face before leaning in to kiss him. Over and over again, I will.

She felt his lips move upward, he's smiling in between the kiss. Eren cannot contain his happiness right now. Loving her is like the horizon that stretches across his field of view, it just never stops. For more than a decade of dating and loving each other, being with her still excites him. Like a high school couple just starting out, like they aren't married already.
