Work Text:

If there was one thing Shoto loved more than his wonderful husband, it had to be receiving free things. His friends called him cheap, and Izuku called him frugal, but Shoto was not ashamed of his guilty pleasure. In fact, he showed it off. To everyone.

The refrigerator he and Izuku owned? Free. Given to him as a gift because apparently the furniture store's owner was a big fan of his.

The highly expensive watch he wore on his wrist? Also free. Given to him by his father which he gladly accepted solely because it cost him absolutely nothing.

Truly, Shoto found no reason to spend his money unless it was to spoil Izuku. Though, sometimes, he liked to see how far he could push his luck.

Every time they walked into an establishment together, at least five things were offered to them in earnest, free of charge. And while Shoto metaphorically drooled over the idea of having so many people practically shove their goods into his open arms, Izuku was always the one to reject any gift with an awkward, but grateful smile. Izuku was less selfish than he was. That much was obvious. Shoto couldn’t do much of his conning while Izuku was with him. Even then, it was no problem. Shoto was flexible, not to mention very smart. He found a way around his problem easily.

“Izuku, would you hand me your ring?”

They were out for dinner, just the two of them. Not for any special occasion, though every moment Shoto spent with his husband truly did feel special.

Izuku glanced up from his plate of food, puzzled. “Why? What’s wrong?” While he questioned him, his hand went to tug at the wedding band that sat on his finger, carefully placing it in Shoto’s awaiting palm.

“Nothing. I was just wondering if…” Slowly slipping out from his seat and getting on one knee, Shoto presented Izuku with his ring just like he did the first time.

His husband seemed to catch on pretty quick, along with the other patrons at the restaurant. Heads were turning, eyes were watching.

“Shoto—?! What are you doing? Get up!” Izuku whispered frantically, his face flaring with color while his eyes whizzed around the restaurant.

“Izuku,” Shoto continued loudly, unperturbed by his husband's writhing in embarrassment. “Will you do me the extraordinary honor of marrying me?”

Are you kidding me? ” Izuku whispered to him, privately so that nobody else would hear. “You‘re doing this. You’re really doing this.”

Shoto offered an impish smile and nothing more.

Izuku whined and shoved his face into his hands, nodding quickly just to get it over with.

Shoto stands, triumph pumping through his veins. “He said yes!” He announced to their apprehensive audience, earning them both a round of applause.

When everyone went back to their dinner, Shoto took his seat, and smiled across the table at a frowning Izuku.

“May I have my ring back?” He grumbled, holding out his palm.

Shoto grinned. “Why of course. I can’t have people thinking you’re still on the market.”

Shoto !” Izuku cried, practically melting into his chair. “We’re married. We got married last year. It was a beautiful reception. So, please, explain why you did that?”

Just before Shoto could atone for his very impulsive actions, a waiter walked up to their table holding a plate of fresh chocolate cake and a grin.

“Dessert’s on the house! Congratulations on the proposal.” The man said, carefully placing the cake in between them.

“Thank you very much. We appreciate it.” Shoto smiled, grabbing Izuku’s hand from across the table to really sell it. He watched as the man bowed and walked off towards the kitchen before turning back to his husband.

“Really?” Izuku huffed. “You wanted free dessert? I could’ve just paid for it, you know?!”

Shoto frowned and took a bite from the cake. “But it tastes so much better when it’s free. Here, try it.”

Despite his words, Izuku did take a bite of the dessert, Shoto spooning a piece into his mouth with a satisfied smile.

“I’m filing for divorce right after we finish this cake.” Izuku frowned, parting his lips for another bite.

Shoto continued to feed him happily, not even bothering to eat any himself. If Izuku noticed what he was doing, he mentioned nothing of it. Shoto would escape his wrath one way or another.

“You’re unbelievable.” Izuku scoffed.

“You love me. Forever. You said it yourself. No take backs.” Shoto shrugged, wiggling his own ring finger just to prove his point.

Izuku shook his head with a fond roll of his eyes and a sip from his wine.

“No take backs.”

He may have been banned from ever taking them out to dinner again, but it was worth it. So, very worth it.
