Kylo Ren was handled so poorly. he's meant to be in his 30s but acts like Anakin did in his early 20s, he had the potential to be SO much more. he had a genuinely good reason for turning to Snoke. his parents were TERRIBLE parents and sent him off as quick as they could and his uncle tried to murder him in his sleep, Snoke took him in and trained him and now he was fighting against EVERYTHING his family stood for and was trying to bring back everything they fought AGAINST. that had SO much potential, hell they could have had Kylo reveal that he read Han's mind and he was going to shoot Kylo to stop him. THAT would have shaken Rey's ENTIRE world view, having believed Kylo was the bad guy and Han and Leia were perfect. learning that she was wrong would have had her fundamentally questioning who was right,
Rey realising that Luke wanted to kill Kylo to prevent him from taking over the galaxy leaves and goes to save Kylo only for Kylo to take the First Order for himself and tries to talk him out of it, Kylo offers to have her stand beside him and remake the galaxy in their image, right the wrongs of the galaxy their way. (just like Anakin asked Padme) Rey reluctantly agrees on the condition that Kylo spare the resistance. the 3rd movie starts with Kylo training Rey, them ruling the galaxy with the resistance trying to build themselves back up, (Luke having joined after Rey left)
Kylo discovers the truth that Snoke was just a puppet for the real Master of the First Order, looks into it and discovers Palpatine survived and is planning to return and conquer the galaxy after Kylo killed Snoke, realising how outmatched he would be alone he ups Rey's training to get her ready to atleast face Palpatine and not die immediately, Rey convinces Kylo to let her contact Leia and tell her about Palpatine, during the call Leia realises that Rey is not alone and tentatively says Kylo, Kylo having heard Leia bitterly shows himself and insults Leia for still being afraid of him even on a holo call (Leia having said she was afraid of Ben when he was a child) Leia attempts to apologise and heal the wounds that have festered between them, Kylo tells her he isn't interested in anything she has to say and tells her he wouldn't believe anything she said anyway, Rey tells Leia what is happening and they come up with a cease fire to deal with Palpatine, in the end Leia, Luke. Rey and Kylo confront Palpatine and it takes everything they have to end him once and for all, having saved Rey and taken heavy damage (having done the most) Kylo is vulnerable, Luke fearing that Kylo was evil and a threat to the galaxy tries to kill him, Rey barely conscious tries to stop Luke but is easily subdued, Kylo spitting blood mocks Luke for thinking he's (Luke) the "hero" of the story and that he (Kylo) is the "Villain"
Luke sorrowfully tells his nephew that he was sorry and that he wished he could have saved him but that there was nothing more dangerous than a man who believed he was right, but before Luke can bring his lightsaber down and kill Kylo a blaster shot rings out, Luke stumbles and reaches a hand down to his chest, feeling the searing heat from the hole in his chest he turns and sees his sister, his twin holding her blaster, he shakingly asks why? to which Leia replies "there is nothing more dangerous than a man who believes he's right" he collapses to his knees coughing, Leia walks up and hugs him telling him how they were all wrong, how it was THEIR fault Ben turned to Snoke, that once she had wished Vader dead for what he had done but that it was Luke's faith and love in him that saved them all, and that seeing Rey do more for her son than she ever did showed her that which she was blind to for so long. that they had failed the 1 person who needed them most and that she could not fail him again no matter the cost, Kylo....Ben having seen absolute proof of his mothers love finally accepted the Light he had fought against for so long believing it was a lie, and told his dying uncle that he would not be a jedi, but neither would he be a sith, after Luke's funeral Kylo Ben and Rey announce to the galaxy that Palpatine is dead and that the war was over, together with Leia they heal the wounds that the last 90 years of war and strife had caused, Kylo and Rey marrying and having kids, establishing a new force school where people are taught to control their powers, but nothing more, the days of Sith and Jedi long gone.
