Dead Emails! Does it Not Sound Like Dead Men?

Summary:

"Okay, Haji? Here's what I want you to do for me. Put your laptop in airplane mode... now can you open up Outlook? Good. Now start a draft and click away that little window asking you if you want to turn the wi-fi on. Excellent. I want you to type a dead letter."

Hajime scoffed. "Sorry, a what?"

"A dead letter." Nagito's eyes were bright. "Correspondence that's undeliverable and unreadable. I want you to write one to my Luck colleague and tell him how you really feel."

Work Text:

TO: Makoto Naegi
CC/BCC: Branch14-ALL, Byakuya Togami
SUBJECT: Fuck You

I have worked for this goddamn sham of an astroturf piece of shit corporation (I refuse to call it a ‘militarized non-profit’ like you’ve been pushing because WHAT the fuck does that even mean that’s an oxymoron) for over a fucking decade.

You think it’s easy for me to maintain this building’s critical infrastructure all by myself? I know you do, because every day when you see me in-person I see how you look up at my forehead like you’re checking to see if my shitty surgery scar somehow magicked itself away overnight. Don’t think I don’t notice it. For the record, you’ve done the same exact bullshit to my husband with his arm. It’s not sly, you’re not nearly as subtle about it as you think you’re being, and it’s really fucking weird that you still do it after all these years. It’s like you think I’m gonna morph into some Kamukura Boogeyman.

But yeah no I literally do everything for this company (fuck you, it’s not a non-profit). Server maintenance, copy-editing, phone banking, recruitment, AND what is essentially YOUR job as Director by doing ALL of the public speaking at your fundraising drives that you barely contribute anything to. All you do is get blackout drunk while Asahina and I do all the heavy lifting. Remind me again why we’re ‘discouraged’ from talking about our salaries in the workplace? Is it because people would finally wake the hell up and realize that you rake in way too fucking much of our annual budget? By the way, how was your vacation to San Juan last month? Kept slipping my mind to ask. Maybe it was the lobotomy??? Who fucking knows! I wonder.

Just because I can do random niche shit doesn’t mean that it was part of my original job description. Remember when you asked me if I could fix that leaking coolant tank on one of the water coolers? And I said that I couldn’t?

I was lying. I totally could have. I was just too busy rewriting your stupid Christmas anti-phishing scam PSA that you wanted to me to send out to everyone the same afternoon… for whatever reason.

Hey, newsflash? I hate hate triple fucking hate it whenever you suggest I do wfm during our high traffic months, and you act like you’ve just cracked the goddamn Da Vinci Code…

“Nags?”

“Hm?”

“Who wrote that Da Vinci book? The one you kept saying was really bad. You remember?”

“Oh, The Da Vinci Code? Dan Brown. One of my rare one-star Goodreads scores. How could I forget?”

“Thanks, bubs.”

“Mhm. Is this helping?”

“Yeah… I think so. Hang on.”

…like you’re goddamn Dan Brown when you don’t seem to realize that most of the shit I do that keeps the lights on has to be done in-house. If I could do fucking wfm, I’d have requested it the first time…

“Is it okay if I pull the ‘my husband has cancer’ card?”

“You make it sound like you’re going to actually send this to him.”

“I’m not. I’m just asking if it’s okay to bring it up.”

“Well, even if you were to send it, I wouldn’t care.”

“I’m just asking, Nags.”

“I know. It’s okay. Keep typing.”

…Nagito had to go back on chemo since Jabberwock. If you think I declined doing wfm out of the goodness of my heart and ‘passion for the role’ then you’re way too fucking delusional for me to keep going. It speaks a lot that you’d even suggest it, to be honest. It’s like you don’t even know what I do all day.

I would have taken more PTO then. But remember? I maxed out and you had to email me with a fucking sob story about how you were “so sorry” while I had just gotten off the phone with my husband’s internist telling me that he they had to do a STAT biopsy that I couldn’t be there for because you needed me to set up a new router for the fiber optic we were getting installed. And you didn’t even have the nerve to walk over twenty yards and tell me that to my face yourself. Must be nice having a Togami lapdog around.

Next time I get my performance review, if you even think about mentioning how I’m not ‘being a team player’ – I swear I’ll just walk out. Fuck Future Foundation. Fuck Branch 14. Fuck being guilt-tripped into taking this job in the first place. FUCK not having dental with your shitty health insurance and fuck you for making me waste my life.

Go drown in a lake.

Best,

Komaeda-Hinata, Hajime
Chief Information Officer, Directorial Cadre
Future Foundation Branch 14 Division

“Do you feel better now, bug?”

“I don’t know, maybe? Now I just feel bitter that I can’t actually send it.”

“You could.”

“I want to, but I can’t. You know that.”

“Oh, I know, but it’s fun to think about, isn’t it?

“Heh. Yeah.”

“Did it feel good to write it all out?”

“It did. Yeah. It did. Thanks, bud. Good suggestion.”

“Of course. Just make sure you get rid of it before you turn the wi-fi back on. With my luck rubbing off on you, you might accidentally send it if it’s still up.”

“Fair enough. Alright. I’ll close it out.”

Notes:

Tonight, I give you a slapdash mess. Tomorrow? Who knows....

Hajime's voice is very VERY fun and this gave me a good excuse to play around with it more. Also wanted to try my hand at doing something more limited by restricting myself to dialogue apart from the email. The title is a direct quote from Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" - not the first time I've used it for DR fanfics either but what can I say? I've got my favs.

Thanks all!! Keep being excellent. Almost to the weekend!! <3
