Work Text:
Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore? Don't they know it's the end of the world?
'Cause you don't love me any more
Usagi wakes up with tears already burning her eyes, dreams that broke her heart over and over again leaving her headachey and listless.
“Usagi! You are going to be late for school!”
She walks to the bathroom and tries not to cringe at her reflection. Dark circles and hollow cheeks. Cold water splashed on her face and toothpaste swirled around her mouth wakes her up, focusing her mind.
Her friends are waiting and today will be a great day. She will make it a great day. Even without--
Her mind fills with static, and she lets it, because it’s easier. When she greets her classmates, her smile is genuine.
Why do the birds go on singing? Why do the stars glow above? Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when I lost your love
He wouldn’t be the first man to love a young woman and then leave her, claiming her body and then ghosting her soul. It was a story old as time, and Usagi shouldn’t get so hung up on it. Break-ups happen every day, you don’t have to lose it, she tells herself, harshly.
She pinches her cheeks to add color to her face, and she is able to hug the pink-haired kid living in her house with full enthusiasm because by then the static is back.
Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry?
She pictures him sometimes, in the rare moments her friends and family leave her alone with her thoughts, when her imagination tortures her with images of him with other women. Taller, older, more beautiful, smarter women. Tangled up in bedsheets with his hands on a body that isn’t hers.
‘I did this once with my old girlfriend,' he says to them, 'but she’s nothing like you.’
Then it’s static.
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
She writes the letter diligently, not considering why she’s not hearing back. Everytime she tries to consider why, her brain fills with static and she refuses to listen beneath the white noise. There is something there she’s too deeply afraid of.
So she mails the letter, squeezes her eyes shut against tears, and then forces a smile on her face.
It ended when you said, "Good-bye"
