Work Text:

The library was busy, well busy for a Thursday afternoon during finals. This meant that there wasn’t much room for Cat to sit, or any room for her to sit except for one spot in the back of the room. The person’s books were sprawled out on the table, but the chair next to them was empty. Cat sighed and walked over to the table and sat down. She started pulling out her books and it was then when she found out she’d be sharing a table with for the afternoon, Kara Danvers. They were friendly to each other when they were paired up with each other for a group project or when they passed each other in the hall but they weren’t really friends. There was no animosity between them, Kara was quiet and smart and mostly kept to herself.

“Hi,” Kara said softly, sitting down. “Do you need me to move some of my things?"

She waved the other girl off. “No, it’s fine, thanks.”

They sat there in silence, studying. Well, she was trying to study, she couldn’t seem to concentrate any longer. She sighed, running a hand through her hair.

“Hey, are you okay?” the other blonde asked, putting her pencil down. “That sounded like a ‘if I look at another page I’m going to die’ kind of sigh.”

“More like a ‘if I look at one more passage, I’m going to throw this textbook’ kind of sigh.” She smiled, shuffling through her bag and found the novel she was reading earlier. “I think it’s time for a little break. Sorry I didn’t mean to distract you.”

“I’ve been there.” She laughed before placing her hand over her mouth, shooting a sheepish glance around the library. “Is that Murder on the Orient Express?”

She stared at the book for a moment, “Yeah, it’s one of my favourite’s.”

“Mine too!” She exclaimed. “I mean… Agatha has so many good books but this one is just such a-”

“A classic,” She finished for her, her head titled in surprise. “Although my actual favourite is Endless Night,”

“No,” Kara’s mouth opened in surprise, “Mine too. I mean it’s not as popular but by far one of her best works.”

Cat nodded in agreement, “Especially since it was written so late in her career too.”

Kara opened her mouth to speak but they heard another voice behind them. “Ladies, if you want to chat, I suggest leaving and letting the people that want to study do so in peace.”

They muttered their apologies before Kara turned back to look at Cat.

“I was going to take a break anyways and get some food, we can go together… if you want.” She bit her lip, avoiding Cat’s eyes

“Yeah, sure.” She spoke softly. “I’d love that.”

"Great,” Kara beamed, placing her books in her bag.

They walked out the library, and Cat noticed Kara's camera hanging around her neck.

Only later when they had bought lunch and were sitting by one of the campuses old oak trees Cat had the courage to ask. “I’ve seen you taking pictures, are you any good?”

“Well… I don’t know. I sort of just point and shoot whenever I see something interesting. I don’t actually have any idea what I’m doing.” She confessed, as she pulled out her camera. “What do you think?”

“These are…” she shook her head, amazed at the other girl’s skill. “These are incredible.”

“Thanks,” she blushed and took the camera back. “I’ve never actually shown them to anyone.”

Cat’s mouth opened a bit in shock before she pursed her lips. “We’re looking for another photographer on the newspaper since Frankie’s leaving. You should come by after school.”

“I..” she beamed. “I’m more of an artist than I photographer but… thank you. I’ll come by tomorrow.”

“An artist huh,” Cat teased, her eyebrows raised. “Do I get to see what’s in that sketchbook of yours?”

“Maybe someday… I’m not ready to show that to the world yet.” She shook her head slightly, a chuckle leaving her lips. “I… I don’t even know why I told you.”

“It’s okay,” She reassured, after a moment she added. “I write articles for the paper, but I haven’t let anyone see my actual prose. I haven’t even mentioned it to anyone.”

“What do you write about?”

“The same things I imagine you sketch about…” she confessed with a shy smile.

She ignored the strange flutter in the pit of her stomach as Kara placed a hand on her arm. “Thank you for telling me.”

Her heart sped up a fraction at the sincerity coating the other girl’s words. “What are friends for.”

"Friends," Kara stated, almost as if she were mulling over the term before showcasing what Cat could only describe as the trademark sunny Danvers smile.

That smile was contagious in the best way possible. "Of course,"
