Chapter 1: First Date

Chapter Text

Luz couldn’t believe herself when she approached Hooty asking him to replicate the Tunnel of Love in their basement that was unbeknown to Luz last week. A week that was also known as the week that changed everything but the week she preferred to label as the best one of her life. It was unexpected how everything turned out but that was what made it so perfect and so spectacular. The way the human girl shook and the way the witch before her blushed redder than a tomato and the awkwardness, the fumbling, the poorly timed questions - it was perfect to be imperfect.

“Amity Blight, do you wanna go out with me?”

“YES!”

Luz always smiled when that moment replayed in her head. It was the best moment of her life and she had never been happier to hear those three letters strung into a word either. It was important for Luz to ask the cotton candy-haired goddess first. She had been pining after the girl for a long time, so long it was almost painful but she got there in the end as did Amity. They were both head over heels for each other and that in itself was painful to watch by those around them but again, they got there in the end. Of course, just because they were officially dating didn’t make things smooth sailing. It was new for both of them. Neither girl had a romantic partner before. It was frightening but also deliciously exciting. They wanted to be around the other all the time and that’s when Amity thought that a date was in order as did Luz but it wasn’t what she was expecting.

“So, are you going to take me through the Tunnel of Love properly this time?”

Luz’s face fell at the question but the way Amity’s vulnerable eyes glistened into her own made the word, “no” impossible to voice, which led her to the present moment - asking Hooty to recreate the dreaded tunnel of which made Luz shudder. Yes, it was cute but it was so cheesy but that was okay. Amity liked cheesy and she liked it with Luz and because of that, Luz was going to give it her all.

“YES!”

Hooty’s screech caused Luz’s hands to cover her ears as the entire house shook. Before Luz could say more, Hooty was already in the basement fixing the tunnel, making it just as, if not MORE romantic as it once was. Luz was shocked by the effort and she couldn’t thank the owl enough. Hooty was more than happy to help, more than happy to give Luz everything she needed, more than happy to kidnap Amity again but Luz took that on as her own task. The fact that Hooty was able to kidnap Amity from her house was scary enough let alone wrap her up and dump her in the dark basement. Luz preferred not to think about it.

“How do I look?” Luz checked.

Eda, King, and Hooty all had tears in their eyes. Luz was in her usual attire but what was different was her holding flowers and a heart-shaped box filled with Amity’s favourite sweets. It was her first date and her surrogate family was so proud of her as if they had raised her since she was a baby.

“Guys!” Luz whined. “Don’t cry! Seeing you cry will make ME cry and I can’t have my eyes all red and puffy for my date with Amity!”

“I know!” King blew his nose loudly whilst Hooty’s tears were flooding the floor.

“We’re just so happy for you, kid,” Eda approached the girl, placing a supportive hand on her shoulder. “You and Amity will be great together. You’ll make each other so happy. Now,” she sniffed and wiped away her tear before it fully escaped. “Go get her.”

That was all Luz needed. With her head held high and her heart an extra size bigger, the girl proudly opened the door when a knock sounded on it. Despite being official for a week, Luz still got nervous when she was around Amity but that wasn’t her fault. Amity was perfect. Luz considered her to be an angel and deep down, she really was.

Opening the door, Luz felt her heart stop at the sight of the purple-haired girl who was already blushing furiously.

“Amity!” She beamed.

“Hey, Luz,” She spoke shyly but that only made Luz fall for her further.

“Are you ready for our date?”

“Yes, I am. Are those for me?” She pointed to the flowers and heart-shaped box.

“Uh, yeah! Yeah, they are. H-here,”

Luz handed them over and Amity’s heart swooned. She wasn’t expecting it but she loved them. She loved Luz’s soft, gentle, caring heart. She loved the way Luz was always so thoughtful and considerate. She loved how much love Luz had to give. She was almost too good to be true and, furthermore, too good for Amity but Amity had to push those thoughts aside. They were infecting her thoughts more and more every day. She knew she was being irrational and she knew she was overthinking things but the thoughts never left her and she hated it. She couldn’t ponder on them tonight though. Tonight was her very first date with Luz and it had to be perfect.

“Thank you,” Amity said. “They’re beautiful.” She stepped in to give the girl a kiss on the cheek and this time, she didn’t freak out.

Yes, her heart was hammering in her chest and she felt like her knees were going to buckle but she kept her eyes focused on Luz who now was the one blushing furiously. Amity’s lips were soft and warm and Luz hoped that wasn’t the last time she would receive them tonight.

“Y-you’re welcome,” she stammered. “Uhh… Are you ready?”

Amity nodded with an eager smile. “Yes.”

“Cool! Let’s go.” Taking the witch’s hand, Luz led Amity in the house and downstairs into the basement with Eda, King, and Hooty bursting into tears when the girls were out of sight.

The tunnel was already lit up with bright, colourful lights with the cheesy, fluffy, cute romantic music playing in the background. It truly was cringeworthy but it’s what Amity liked and Luz was getting into the headspace of whatever Amity liked, she got. Luz had a feeling that it would be the end of her but Amity’s smile at the least was worth it.

The two girls climbed into the giant swan and off they went. The redness from Amity’s face never left her and Luz couldn’t stop looking at her. She was too beautiful to avert her gaze.

“What?” Amity giggled when she caught Luz staring at her.

“Nothing,” she mimicked. “You’re just so cute.”

Amity couldn’t think her blush could get any more crimson but it did and she proceeded to do something Luz didn’t expect at all - Amity cuddled into her side. Amity smelt amazing. She smelt of flowers and perfume if Luz wasn’t mistaken. She was still getting accustomed to all of the different scents in the Demon Realm. She was surprised to discover that every race had their own unique scent. Witches had a very sweet and alluring scent. Demons had a very strong, attractive scent. But none of them smelt as good as Amity.

Luz put her arm around the girl, pulling her in close. Butterflies erupted in Amity’s stomach and Luz swore she could feel them. Luz then pressed a gentle kiss onto Amity’s head and the witch felt like she was going to pass out but she didn’t. Instead, she relished in Luz’s hold as she opened her box of sweets. They were her favourite - mini fairy cakes. Luz had to hold back her breakfast when she saw them in the store but she knew Amity liked them and, again, whatever Amity liked, she got. The witch ate the cakes like they were chocolates, which they probably were in the Demon Realm. They had a unique smell - sweet and also a little spicy but Luz wasn’t going to put her tastebuds to the test. She had to be careful what she ate in the Demon Realm. It was a real challenge but she was figuring it out with the aid of her surrogate family and recently, Amity.

“So, good first date so far?” Luz asked after a few minutes.

“It’s perfect, Luz. I love it.”

“Who knew Amity Blight could be such a softie?”

Amity giggled. “Don’t tell anyone.”

“Oh, I won’t but it won’t take long for everyone at school to figure it out.”

“Shut up,” she giggled again, gently smacking Luz’s arm.

Luz merely giggled and kissed Amity’s head again. She wasn’t as nervous that time. It felt good. It felt right and Luz knew she wanted to do it as much as she could and she couldn’t help but delve further into the thoughts that included Amity’s lips on her own and she wasn’t alone in those thoughts. Having their first kiss was yet to occur. Thinking about it was so terrifying but so exhilarating the girls didn’t know what to do about it. Luz could hear Eda’s voice in her head that would tell her to just do it. Easier said than done. Amity could hear her sibling's voices in her head that would most likely tease her first before pestering her until she did it. Either way, kissing was definitely in the forefront of their thinking but naturally, fear and uncertainty stood in their way.

The Tunnel of Love was everything Amity hoped it to be and more and Luz was surprised to share the same thoughts. It was overly cheesy, cringeworthy, and upright terrible but it was a great first date and an even greater way to make up for Luz’s overreaction the first time. Luz continued to hold Amity close as the box of mini fairy pies were now gone and it made the human smile. Amity alternated between smelling her flowers and relishing in Luz’s scent. Humans had a unique smell to them, too. They were a little musky but not in a bad way. They had to keep clean to maintain a good smell. It was easy for witches, demons, and the like to smell a human's biology through their skin but Luz was able to cover that by maintaining hygiene topped with perfume and other scents. Regardless, Amity loved Luz’s scent. She smelt of the forest and fresh linen. It was Luz’s unique scent and Amity could have easily fallen asleep to it and she hoped in the near future she could.

The ride ended too soon for both girl’s liking. The swan stopped and the girls sat upright and instinctively turned to one another. Their eyes locked and time stopped. All they could see was each other as if the world around them suddenly disappeared. Luz’s eyes flicked down to Amity’s lips. Amity’s eyes flicked down to Luz’s lips. It was time. Their first kiss was in their grasp. They were nervous to the point of perspiration. Their natural scents soon became overwhelming and they wanted to close that precious gap between them but when Luz started to lean in, Amity pulled away. Luz froze, fear consuming her.

“Amity, I’m sorry,” she fretted. “I didn’t mean-”

“It’s not you, Luz…” Amity shifted, crossing her arms over her chest as her eyes fell onto her lap desolately. “It’s me.”

“What do you mean?”

Amity sighed. “Do… do you really want this with me?”

Luz was shocked. After everything that they had been through and Amity asked that? It was perplexing.

“Of course I do! Why do you ask me that?”

She sighed again. “I was so mean to you when we first met… I challenged you just to prove a point. I’ve put you in situations that have harmed you. I’ve embarrassed you. I’ve done things I’m so ashamed of and yet, you come back with a smile and forgiveness. You’re the most bright, bubbly, optimistic, outgoing, and accepting person I’ve ever met. You do what’s right and you’re not afraid to stick up for what you believe in and who you believe it. You’re protective of the ones you love and you only want what’s best for everyone. You don’t let anything get you down. You’re like the epitome of perfection, Luz. You’ve waltzed into a world where humans are looked down upon and treated as such but yet, everyone seems to love you. It’s like you keep your friends close and your enemies closer and it works out for you in the end. I’ve been nothing but mean and difficult. I’ve always felt not good enough thanks to my parents, more so my mom. I’ve always felt belittled by my siblings and judged by my so-called friends… and as a witch? Sometimes it’s like I’m not one at all.”

Luz gasped. “Wha…? Amity, no!”

“And then you come along, just wanting to be my friend. I pushed you away as much as I could but you never gave up on me and, I don’t know how you did it, but you managed to sneak into my heart and steal it from me and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I hated myself for feeling that way towards you and when I found out that you felt the same way… it felt like a dream but here we are, on our first date as if everything’s been a cute, little love story from the books we read but it’s not. It’s the opposite… I… I’m not good enough for you, Luz.”

Luz could feel her heart breaking. She could hear and feel the pain in Amity’s voice and she could see the tears in the witch’s eyes.

“Amity,” Luz reached over and took the girl’s hand. “Where is all of this coming from?”

Amity shook her head, unable to look the human in the eye without bursting into tears.

“Amity, please don’t say that about yourself. You’re amazing. No, we didn’t get along when we first met. No, our relationship hasn’t been perfect. No, we’re not something out of a book but that’s what makes us so unique! I’m not blind to the fact that you weren’t the nicest person to me when we first met but I understand why. I didn’t like it but I knew there was a softer side to you. I knew you weren’t truly mean and I wanted to bring out that side in you. I made mistakes along the way but I did it in the end and I know this is who you really are and THAT’S who I want to be with.”

“Luz…”

“No, I don’t want to hear you say another negative thing about yourself. I won’t have it. Amity, you think I’m perfection, which is really sweet but it’s not true. I always messed up back home and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve messed up here, too. Do you know how many times I’ve felt not good enough? I’m in a world where humans aren’t welcome. Every day is a fight but I can’t let that get the better of me. Mom taught me better and it’s what’s kept me going all this time. I’ve always tried my best to make the best of a bad situation and to keep trying and that’s worked for me and that’s what you see - not my perfection. I hate that you think you’re not good enough for me. Once I got past that hard, rough exterior, I saw the real you and that’s who I want and who’s good enough for me and… if I’m being honest… I feel like I’m not good enough for you…”

Amity’s eyes widened and she finally looked at Luz. “W… what?”

“Yeah,” Luz rubbed the back of her neck anxiously. “I mean, you’re such a talented, amazing, smart, cute, pretty witch who’s the top of her class and that’s intimidating. Who would have thought that someone like you would want to be with someone like me?”

Amity’s heart swooned. Luz had just taken all of her insecurities and threw them out the window. She felt free and she wanted nothing more than to continue with what Luz was doing earlier.

“Luz,” the witch uttered.

“Yeah?”

“Can we kiss now?”

Luz swallowed hard as her face felt like it caught fire.

“Uh… Y-y-y-yeah. Yeah, that sounds good. I mean, if you’re comfortable-”

Luz was silenced by Amity’s lips crashing against her own. The kiss was its own kind of magic. It transported the girls into their own world where it was just them and nothing else mattered or would ever matter. With their eyes closed, they saw each other and embraced. Amity held her hands on Luz’s face as Luz’s hands found their way onto Amity’s hips that eventually curled around to her back where her arms encased her. The touch of their lips was invigorating. They were soft and pure. The kiss was all and more than anything they thought it could be.

When it ended, they were breathless. Their faces were bright red and their body felt like it just went through a marathon. When they looked at each other, they knew they were right where they were meant to be - together. Everything fell into place right then and there and any insecurity and doubt dissipated. Amity wanted to be with Luz and Luz wanted to be with Amity. That was the beginning and end of everything.

“Whoa…” Luz mumbled, not expecting Amity to hear but she did.

“Is Luz Noceda speechless for the first time in her life?” Amity teased and Luz laughed.

“Can we, like, do that again? I mean, not right now but… soon? Maybe? Like, when you're leaving to go home we could… perhaps… do it again then? Just a little one?”

Luz couldn’t get cuter and Amity felt her heart turn to goo.

“I’d like that,” she blushed then took the girl’s hand. “Do you wanna try and get more out of the echo mouse?”

“Yeah, we could… or we could read our favourite parts of Azura together on my bed? We can cuddle again that way.”

That was all Amity needed to grasp onto Luz’s hand tightly and yank her out of the boat, emitting a yelp from the human.

“I’m guessing that’s a, “yes” then?” Luz checked.

Amity grinned as she replied enthusiastically, “You bet!”
