Notes:

hi!!! i'm super excited to post this, my first fill for the AU-gust (for more info about this challenge, go to this link: augustwritingchallenge.tumblr.com) the prompt was originally 'ancient gods', but because that seemed like it would require too much research, i swapped it out for the 'Fantasy' joker card. anyway, enjoy this monster hunter/demon mcsombra AU! 💜

Work Text:

Cassidy whistled loudly as he made his way through the dark forest. Anyone else would have been terrified of making any sound, for fear of alerting the demons and fae crawling through the trees, but Cassidy was not ‘anyone else’. The spirits in the forest knew better than to even look at him wrong. If they did, well… his darling would destroy them.

“I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come,” Sombra crooned from somewhere above him. Cassidy smiled, looking up.

“Sorry to keep you waitin’, Darlin’. I had some… business to attend to.” As the gunslinger spoke, he glanced down to his hands, which still had dried blood in their crevices. The werewolf that he’d been hired to kill had proven more resourceful than he’d anticipated. Of course, Cassidy had still bested him. He wasn’t the best monster hunter in the world for no reason, after all.

Sombra huffed, suddenly appearing behind him. He didn’t jump, not like he once would have. Her shenanigans were old hat to him. “What business could possibly be better than spending time with me?” she asked, leaning against a sturdy oak tree.

Cole shrugged, turning to face his demon lover. She was wearing her armor, and he couldn’t help but swoon a bit at how good she looked in it. “I wouldn’t call it better, Sweetheart, but a man’s gotta make a livin’,” he defended, reaching over so he could pull back her hood, fully revealing her face. It had taken him some time to get used to her inhuman appearance, from the glowing eyes to her pointed ears to her sharp teeth. But by now, he was enchanted by her with just a single glance.

Rolling her eyes, Sombra huffed once again. “You know, hunter,” she purred, approaching him so she could wrap her arms around his shoulders. “I could take you to my realm. There, you wouldn’t have to worry about making a living.” Her voice was a little bit playful, but also filled with a promise. Cole had no doubt that if he asked her to, she would whisk him away in a heartbeat.

Chuckling, he shook his head slightly. It was far from the first time Sombra had offered, and it would be far from the last. One day, he would probably even say yes.

But the world needed him. There were far too many monsters that were terrorizing innocents, and Cole couldn’t just leave them behind. “Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not quite done here yet.”

An exaggerated frown fell onto Sombra’s lips. Cole laughed at her pout, pulling her in for a kiss and burying a hand in her inky black hair. She leaned into his touch, frown turning into a little grin. “One of these days I’ll convince you,” she murmured once he pulled away from the kiss.

“I’m sure you will, Darlin’.” As he spoke, he lifted a hand to cup her face. Her skin was cold against his, but he didn’t mind. Any touch from her was cherished, despite the chill that clung to her skin.

They stayed like that for a few seconds, relishing in the company that they were deprived of so often. “How long do I have you for?” Cole eventually asked, prepared for her to answer that they only had a few days. That was the norm, after all.

Sombra’s glowing eyes got brighter. “A week. Maybe two, if we’re lucky,” she said, unable to keep the excitement out of her tone. It was rare to get so much time together. Sombra did have a demon realm to rule, after all, and that was a busy job.

Cole grinned widely at how long he would get with her. Unable to stop himself, he wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her and spinning them around. Sombra let out a shrieking giggle, clinging to his shoulders. “Don’t get too excited, hunter,” she chided, but her tone let him know that she shared his giddiness.

“Can’t help it, Sweet Pea. I love you that much.” Sombra rolled her eyes, but Cole didn't miss how she pressed her lips together to suppress her smile.

“Whatever,” she scoffed. Then, after a second, “I love you, too.”

Grinning, Cole grabbed her hand and began to lead her out of the forest toward his cabin. “C’mon, Sombra. I ain’t wasting a single moment with you,” he said, practically skipping like a schoolgirl.

Sombra eagerly followed him home. “Lead the way, hunter.”
