Chapter Text

"Hey Peko! Wait up!"

Fuyuhiko stumbled towards the young girl, grabbing her hand and pulling her away from her friends.

"J-just come with me..." He blushed, averting his gaze and thumbling around with the fabric of his shorts in one  hand (the other was still wrapped around Peko's)

Peko didn't say a word, and biting back the giddy feeling in her chest, she politely nodded, allowing herself to be dragged to the now empty playground.

Fuyuhiko released her hand, skipping up the steps to the top of the playset.

Peko didn't move an inch, confused. Was she supposed to watch him while he played? Their preschool was rather safe, (his family entrusted him here after all) but she supposed you never knew what could go wrong.

She began walking over to a bench when he stopped her.

"Where are you going?"

He had stopped halfway up the steps, and without any more words Peko cautiously made her way over to him.

She wanted to ask where she was taking him, why he wanted her up here with him, and to tell him that soon his parents someone (that his parents had paid, she corrected) would pick them up, that he should hurry.

But he just smiled and sat down on the edge of the playset where the fire pole  stood.

She took a seat next to him.

They blushed, shoulders softly pressed against one another, the tight space keeping their small bodies close.

Then Peko looked up. The fading sun was casting its warm sunset hues upon the clouds. The whole sky was engulfed in soft reds and yellows and pinks.

"It's so beautiful..." Peko mumbled.

It was silent.

She was snapped out of her trance, swiftly turning towards the young boy beside her.

His eyes were wide, staring directly into hers.

She knew it. She had overstepped her boundaries. He had said that he wanted to be friends, but she was still his bodyguard- his tool! She shouldn't-

"Peko!" Fuyuhiko shouted, his hand gripping her wrist.

She hadn't realized she had stood up. She softened, looking down at him through her bangs.

He mirrored her actions, looking down and in the softest voice he could manage he whispered. "Just... sit down..."

And so she did. She sat down in her previous spot right beside him. And she couldn't deny how perfect it felt; there was just enough space for the two to fit there, and the warmth of his body lightly pressed against her own helped cover up the passing chill from the setting sun.

She heard a crinkling sound, causing her to finally turn towards him.

His cheeks were flushed. (It was just from the cold) He was was facing her, but his eyes weren't met with her eyes. (He doesn't want to looks at you) H-

"Give me your hand..." He flushed, gently taking her hand in his own.

His eyes were looking right into her own now, big circles reflecting the colors of the sunset. (She couldn't help but wonder if hers looked like that)

Then he slid something over her finger.

They had already slid down the fire pole and off the playset, but neither wanted to leave the playground yet. So they simply laid on the grass of the field, staring at the sky now filled with stars to wish upon.

"You know, we should probably go back now," Peko spoke, although she hadn't broken contact with the stars.

"M'hm"

"The suns already set, we should've been picked up an hour ago..."

"Yeah"

"...Your parents have mostly likely sent out a search party to look for you,"

A snicker.

"Hmm," he though. "Yeah, probably"

They didn't make any move to stand up though. It was getting cold, and it was already dark and they were bound to get in big trouble if they went back even now.

But they didn't get up.

"Do you think we could get married when we're older?"

The question caused Peko to turn towards Fuyuhiko, the boy still staring dreamingly into the night sky.

She wanted to answer him, but bit her lip and stayed silent.

"That's what I wished for, you know?" He turned towards her.

But she just looked away, ignoring the sorrowful look she in the face she cared for so much in the corner of her eye, twisting the plastic ring around her thumb, (it had been too big to fit around any other finger) as she closed her eyes and smile warmly.

She was never one to believe in childish things like wishing on stars, but she couldn't help the fond feeling her her heart.

Peko fondly picked up the ring. The plastic was now worn. The color had long since faded from its bright yellow to a paler shade. The placed it upon her pinky finger. (The rest were just a bit too big for it to fit all the way over)

She her hand above her eyes, looking at the much nicer ring on the finger beside it.

Maybe wishes are more likely to come true if we both wish for them.
